If you're wondering why it's increasingly rare to see comedies in theaters, Adam Devine says he has a good idea as to what happened. According to the Workaholics star, Marvel is to blame for dwindling comedies, suggesting the Disney-owned studio has produced movies so large, movie-goers have not only become accustomed to seeing blockbusters rather than small-scale fare, but would rather choose to do so.

"You watch comedies nowadays and you're like, this is not a fucking comedy," Devine said on a recent episode of Theo Von's This Past Weekend. "Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There's still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy...it's hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it. I feel like superhero movies ruined comedies because you go to the theater and you expect to watch something that cost $200 million to make, and comedy movies aren't that. So you're like, 'Why would I spend the same amount of money to go watch a little comedy in the theater if I can spend that and watch something that is worth $200 million?' And they still make those movies kind of funny, like, 'Oh my god, is that raccoon talking? This is hilarious!' Which it is, but it's not a real comedy"

The comedian added, "Every studio used to put out several comedies a year and there were like 45 comedies in the theater per year. So every week or so there's a new comedy in the theaters. Now, last year, there was like 6 or 7. It's crazy."

Now Devine finds himself amongst the likes of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola as prominent filmmakers that have a bone to pick with the House of Ideas. After all, it was Scorsese who kicked the latest movement off nearly four years ago after he said he didn't feel Marvel movies were "cinema."

"I don't see them. I tried, you know? But that's not cinema," Scorsese told Empire at the time. "Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."

Twisted Metal Season 1 Has a (Very Important) Post-Credits Scene https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/twisted-metal-post-credits-scene-sweet-tooth-important-season-2-peacock/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 23:45:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 0911dffa-da39-4707-a7d9-103902d90523

The post-credits scene has become something of a common practice in today's world of TV and movies. The Marvel Cinematic Universe took the idea to new heights and most franchises (or hopeful franchise-starters) tack on scenes during or after the credits to tease what might come next. You may not have noticed, but Peacock's Twisted Metal series is one of those titles that uses a post-credits scene to set up the future. Even though the final moments of the show's first season tee up what's to come, there's still one more scene that offers clarity on a major character's fate.

WARNING: This article contains MAJOR spoilers for the first season of Twisted Metal! Continue reading at your own risk...

The first half of the Twisted Metal Season 1 finale is a full-on battle royale that brings to life the popular action of the video games the series is based on. Many of the major characters take to a vehicular battlefield to try and take one another out. Naturally, Sweet Tooth ends up in the fight. Unfortunately for the psychotic killer clown, he doesn't seem to make it through the action. He's shot in the eye and hit by a car going full speed. The last thing we see of Sweet Tooth is his iconic mask, lying bloody on the asphalt.

If you stick around through the finale's credits, though, you'll learn that Sweet Tooth is far from dead, and his thirst for revenge is stronger than ever.

Twisted Metal Post-Credits Scene

The scene after the credits starts with Stu and Michael sitting on a beach, roasting hot dogs over an open fire, having escaped Sweet Tooth's clutches. Remember, Stu turned on Sweet Tooth to save Michael, shooting him in the face in an effort to escape.

That turned out to be a terrible decision. A minute or so into the scene, Sweet Tooth emerges from the jungle behind the two men. He seemingly kills Michael with his sword (though it happens off-screen), before dragging a screaming Stu back into the trees behind him.

It felt like Sweet Tooth would definitely be back for Season 2 of Twisted Metal, provided Peacock orders another round of episodes, but it may have been surprising to see him return to quickly after his death fake-out.

This final scene of the season not only confirms that Sweet Tooth is definitely a part of the future for Twisted Metal, but that he and Stu's story together is far from over. Despite being a murderous maniac, Sweet Tooth opts not to kill Stu. He's got something else in mind for his "S Brother."

Twisted Metal Season 2

Peacock hasn't yet announced a second season of Twisted Metal, and there's no telling just when a decision on the show's future might be made. What we do know, however, is that the creative team clearly has plans in place for a potential Season 2. Not only does Sweet Tooth's return tease an additional story, but the finale also sets up the actual Twisted Metal competition, pitting the best drivers in the world against one another in a deadly tournament.

Do you hope to see Peacock renew Twisted Metal for a second season? Let us know in the comments!

Jeopardy Will Reportedly Recycle Questions Due to Writers' Strike https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/jeopardy-recycling-questions-writers-strike/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 22:03:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt b60d2887-0c2e-4cca-8c39-121a510ea1df

Jeopardy! Season 39 faced difficulties in its final weeks earlier this year after the Writers Guild of America strike forced series co-host Mayim Bialik to temporarily depart from her duties on the show. Given the strike is still ongoing and there's virtually no end in sight, the long-running trivia show will be reusing questions from earlier seasons in its touchstone 40th season. Not only that, but the series will also bring back previous contestants, with showrunner Michael Davies saying it "it would not be fair to have new contestants making their first appearance on the Alex Trebek Stage, doing it with non-original material" on the latest episode of Inside Jeopardy!.

Furthermore, Davies confirmed Season 40 would us "a combination of material that our WGA writers wrote before the strike, which is still in the database, and material that has been re-deployed from multiple seasons of the show."

Currently set to premiere on September 11th, the series will feature a tournament from contestants who previously lost matches in Season 37. Following that, additional contestants from both Season 37 and Season 38 will be featured.

"We decided that, really, we needed to invite back and give a second chance in general to players who probably thought that their chance to come back and play on the Alex Trebek stage had gone forever," Davies said.

Given Bialik left the show at the onset of the strike, it's likely her co-host Ken Jennings will be handling the majority, if not all, of the tapings for the forceeable future.

Why is the WGA striking?

The WGA strike began at the beginning of May, after the Guild was unable to come to a consensus with representatives from studios. This is the second time that the WGA has gone on strike in fifteen years, after striking for 100 days from 2007 to 2008.

"Though we negotiated intent on making a fair deal -- and though your strike vote gave us the leverage to make some gains -- the studios' responses to our proposals have been wholly insufficient, given the existential crisis writers are facing," the WGA said in a statement on May 1st. "We must now exert the maximum leverage possible to get a fair contract by withholding our labor."

The statement continued: "The WGA Negotiating Committee began this process intent on making a fair deal, but the studios' responses have been wholly insufficient given the existential crisis writers are facing. The companies' behavior has created a gig economy inside a union workforce, and their immovable stance in this negotiation has betrayed a commitment to further devaluing the profession of writing. From their refusal to guarantee any level of weekly employment in episodic television, to the creation of a 'day rate' in comedy variety, to their stonewalling on free work for screenwriters and on AI for all writers, they have closed the door on their labor force and opened the door to writing as an entirely freelance profession. No such deal could ever be contemplated by this membership."

The Summer 2023 season is winding down, and that means Cartoon Network is looking ahead to their Fall schedule to close out the year. While there are a number of new animated series now in the works, Cartoon Network's international library is full of major series that have huge fanbases around the world but have yet to make their debut in North America.

That's going to change for one series as The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe is finally going to make its premiere in the United States. According to Cartoon Network's newest press release announcing its plans for the Fall, The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe will be premiering on November 11th at 9:00AM with it then being available for streaming on Max soon after. The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe was created by Eva Lee Wallberg and Christian B?ving-Andersen for Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, and premiered on Cartoon Network in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden territories back in 2017. This was the second major series produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe and teased as a parody of Sir Walter Scott's famous novel, Ivanhoe. It started out as a series of animated shorts before getting a full series order, and now it's getting ready for its worldwide takeover as a result.

As for what to expect from the new series, Cartoon Network teases The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe as such, "Produced by Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe and set for its U.S. debut on Cartoon Network on Nov. 11 at 9:00 am, the series tells the tale of Prince Ivandoe, a self-assured and delusional young buck, joined by his dedicated and clever squire, Bert, on a magical and hilarious hero's quest, through kingdoms filled with swashbuckling, royal rivalries, and magical fairy tale creatures."

New Teen Titans GO! Special Sets Premiere Date on Cartoon Network https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/teen-titans-go-season-8-date-warner-bros-100th-anniversary-special-cartoon-network/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 19:59:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 114feb84-eab3-4800-993e-0f36734acf2a

The Teen Titans are GO-ing Hollywood (again!) in an all-new special celebrating 100 years of Warner Bros. It was announced Monday that Teen Titans GO! season 8 continues with the Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary Special, premiering Saturday, September 23rd, at 9:30 a.m. on Cartoon Network. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the special episode is part of WB's year-long centennial celebration marking the studio's 100th anniversary. According to the synopsis, the special sees the Teen Titans -- Robin, Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy, and Cyborg -- "visit the famed Warner Bros. studio lot for an adventure with exciting surprise guests."

Along with the Teen Titans GO! Warner Bros. 100th Anniversary Special, the network announced new episodes of We Baby Bears (August 26th at 10:00 a.m.), the return of DC's preschooler series Batwheels (September 11th at 7:45 a.m.), and the U.S. debut of Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe's The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe (November 11th at 9:00 a.m.). Cartoon Network's fall programming lineup will continue to stream on Max.

"Cartoon Network presents the best in animation for all generations with iconic, creator-driven shows," said Michael Ouweleen, president of Cartoon Network and Boomerang. "This fall is no exception as we premiere new seasons and series from the talented crews at Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe."

Based on the DC Comics super-teen team, Teen Titans GO! premiered in 2013 as a comedic revival of Cartoon Network's original Teen Titans series that aired 65 episodes across five seasons between 2003 and 2006. Jump City's resident superheroes -- Batman's sidekick Robin (Scott Menville); the alien princess Starfire (Hynden Walch); the half-demon, wholly sarcistic Raven (Tara Strong); the shape-shifting Beast Boy (Greg Cipes); and the robotic Cyborg (Khary Payton) -- previously visited Hollywood in the 2018 feature film Teen Titans GO! to the Movies.

"It is a surprise that we are here 10 years later, especially for kids' animation," executive producer Pete Michail recently told ComicBook when Teen Titans GO! marked its 10th anniversary earlier this year. "A lot of these shows last two, three seasons and they're out, so for us to be pushing nine and here 10 years later, still strong, it's an absolute blessing."

Michail also teased another major milestone: the 400th episode.

"Season 8, we are hitting our 400th episode. I can't tell you what it's about, but we're doing something we've never done before," Michail said. "It's something we've been wanting to do for years and years, and now we are finally doing it, so that's going to be big."

Episodes of Teen Titans GO! are available to stream now on Max, including the first 12 episodes of the ongoing season 8. Sign up for Max here.

Jujutsu Kaisen's Big Break-Up Sparks Response From KFC https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-anime-kfc-gojo-geto/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 19:43:00 +0000 Megan Peters ff3dbd20-b67b-4d8d-aa2a-8c858e79f1a1

Jujutsu Kaisen has been delivering hit after hit this summer. Weeks ago, the hit anime marked its return with season two, and its version of Gojo's Past arc was sheer perfection. The comeback gave anime fans more context about Gojo and Geto's bond before the pair experienced a spectacular break up. And now, the emotional scene has sparked a reply from none other than KFC.

Oh yeah, you read that right. Kentucky Fried Chicken is getting in on this debacle now. Taking to social media, KFC began commenting on the Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 break up, and it seems the colonel is sick over Gojo and Geto.

"Still wiping our tears," KFC shared on Twitter after replying to one fan's still of the Jujutsu Kaisen break up. In the image, you can see Geto in all black walking down a sidewalk in Tokyo, and it is impossible to overlook the background here. After all, Geto is standing next to a KFC... or rather a KIC due to trademark issues.

In the Jujutsu Kaisen manga, creator Gege Akutami held the pair's break up in front of a KFC, and the absurd setting became a quick meme. Readers were eager to see how Jujutsu Kaisen would handle the break up, and it did so perfectly with help from KFC. After catching wind of the ordeal, the chain chicken restaurant had to speak up, so KFC is now deep in its feels with Jujutsu Kaisen fans.

Of course, this is not the last Jujutsu Kaisen will see of Gojo and Geto. The series puts plenty of focus on the Six Eyes user, and we know from Jujutsu Kaisen season one that Geto is still on a rampage. His challenge of war will kick off soon as Geto promised to upend jujutsu society on Halloween in Shibuya. This long-awaited arc will kick off when Jujutsu Kaisen season two returns to television this month. So if you need to brush up on the series, you better do so ASAP.

After all, Jujutsu Kaisen is streaming on Crunchyroll right now. For more details on the hit supernatural series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"For some strange reason, Yuji Itadori, despite his insane athleticism would rather just hang out with the Occult Club. However, her soon finds out that the occult is as real as it gets when his fellow club members are attacked! Meanwhile, the mysterious Megumi Fushiguro is tracking down a special-grade cursed object, and his search leads him to Itadori..."

What do you think about this Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 update? Did you ever expect KFC to weigh in on the drama? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Rick Riordan Pays Tribute to Percy Jackson Cast in Chalice of the Gods https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/rick-riordan-tribute-percy-jackson-cast-sixth-book-chalice-gods/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 19:13:00 +0000 Liam Crowley bafc8527-f4ca-425f-b942-2f07c65606f7

2023 has been a banner year for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The franchise kicked things off in January when cameras were rolling for the final few weeks of Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 production. The eight-episode Disney+ series officially wrapped filming in February. In May, author Rick Riordan released the first Percy Jackson spin-off book, The Sun and the Star, alongside co-author Mark Oshiro. Things stayed quiet for the subsequent summer months until San Diego Comic-Con in July, as the convention was home to the show's first character posters which spotlighted Walker Scobell's Percy, Leah Jeffries's Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri's Grover.

While future plans for the show's promotion and premiere remain unclear at this time, the next big Percy Jackson release has set its rollout. Riordan is set to release a sixth book within the main Percy Jackson franchise entitled Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods. This book won't deal with a world-in-the-balance threat like past adventures as it has been touted as a fun adventure between the franchise's core trio before they head to college.

Rick Riordan Dedicates Percy Jackson 6 to Disney+ Cast

As shared on his Instagram, Rick Riordan has dedicated Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods to the Disney+ trio of Walker Scobell, Aryan Simhadri, and Leah Jeffries.

"To Walker, Aryan, and Leah," the dedication reads. "Here's to new adventures!"

What is Chalice of the Gods About?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods will follow Percy during his senior year of high school. It takes place after the events of the Heroes of Olympus sequel series but before the Trials of Apollo books, making it technically the 11th installment within the greater universe's chronology. In order to ensure he can get into New Rome University, Percy needs to gather letters of recommendations from gods themselves, which sets quests in motion.

"Back in 2019, when we were beginning to explore the idea of a new Percy Jackson adaption, I pitched an idea to Disney that I hoped might convince them to move things along," Riordan shared earlier this year. "If they'd help me get a live-action series off the ground, I would be willing to write a new Percy Jackson novel, or even several, which Disney Publishing could release when the show came out."

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods hits bookshelves on September 26th.

One Piece: Gear 5 Luffy Makes a Ton of Tom & Jerry References https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-anime-gear-5-cartoon/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 19:03:00 +0000 Megan Peters 19cdac30-07de-4e96-98ba-ff92d52739ed

One Piece has had one hell of a week, and the fun is far from over. Just days ago, the entire anime fandom rose up to welcome the anime's best episode in years. At last, the One Piece anime welcomed Gear 5 Luffy to the screen, and its animation was nothing short of incredible. Gear 5 Luffy has taken One Piece to a new level, and after careful viewing, fans have found a ton of Tom & Jerry nods in the anime's big event.

Over on social media, fans began to piece together the cartoon references in One Piece episode 1071. As you can see below, a number of Gear 5 moves shown in the anime make references to Tom & Jerry. From Luffy's slapstick laughter to his inflated physique and more, One Piece was not subtle with its homage to Tom & Jerry.

Anime fans were quick to spot these cartoony nods as they watched One Piece episode 1071, but as for manga readers? Well, they already knew to be on the lookout. One Piece made its Tom & Jerry throwback clear in the manga. In fact, series creator Eiichiro Oda confirmed the tribute in an interview overseas as he said making the cartoon homage was very difficult.

"For the concept, think of it as if I suddenly drew Tom and Jerry," Oda shared. "When I tried to draw it, it was actually difficult. The world of Tom and Jerry works because of the two of them. I suffered because of the difference in attitude when I looked at Luffy being the only one making pranks in battle and his opponent not. But I feel this time I was able to draw it."

Clearly, the team at Toei Animation was able to bring Oda's homage to Tom & Jerry to life, and there is more on the way. Gear 5 is all about untapped potential, joy, and the boundless power of imagination. When in this form, Luffy can make just about anything happen and that definitely includes slapstick nods to a classic cartoon. So if you are not caught up on One Piece, we suggest you start binging the Wano arc ASAP.

Not familiar with One Piece? Well, no sweat! The anime is easier to catch up on now than ever as it is streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll. For more details on One Piece, you can read its official synopsis below:

"As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks. But Luffy's life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber...at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure...one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary "One Piece," said to be the greatest treasure in the world..."

What do you think about this One Piece throwback? Did the debut of Gear 5 Luffy live up to your expectations? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Star Wars: Ahsoka Character Posters Revealed https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/star-wars-ahsoka-characters-posters-disney-plus/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 18:49:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 93a18bed-da68-43cb-bc96-0b5a59338fd4

Star Wars: Ahsoka has released some new character posters, which you can check out below!

In addition to Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano, the new character posters for Star Wars' latest Disney+ series include heroic allies Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), as well as the more questionable and/or villainous characters in the series, like former Jedi turned mercenary, Baylan Skoll (the late Ray Stevenson), his apprentice Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno), and Grand Admiral Thrawn's ally Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto).

Ahsoka is a highly-anticipated new entry in the Star Wars franchise - especially for diehard fans of the Star Wars Animation Universe. Ahsoka will serve as a sequel to the events of the Star Wars Rebels series, which featured Hera, Sabine, and their "Spectre" Rebel cell working with Ahsoka against the Empire while helping shape the Rebel Alliance.

In addition to being a sequel to Rebels, Ahsoka will re-introduce the Spectres' archnemesis, Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen), and set up Star Wars writer/director/producer Dave Filoni's upcoming crossover movie event, which will bring together the characters of the New Republic Era - a time period that includes Ahsoka Tano, The Mandalorians, Boba Fett's syndicate, and all the New Republic officers, bounty hunters, and Imperial remnants that stand in-between.

Rosario Dawson has already let it be known that if the opportunity for Ahsoka Season 2 or some other crossover appearance for her version of the character, she's already more than game for it:

"If more comes next, I'd be really excited and grateful," Dawson told EW. "I feel like every time I get to step into her shoes, I learn more. I experience what I could never experience otherwise, and I feel like I keep getting better."

Fan-favorite Star Wars hero Ahsoka Tano returns in the brand new series on Disney+. Rosario Dawson stars in Star Wars: Ahsoka, premiering August 23rd on the streamer. The series picks up after the events of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, in which we saw the former Jedi searching for Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) and helping Luke Skywalker train Grogu. Ahsoka will be joined on her new mission alongside longtime allies Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) and Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) as they attempt to track down Thrawn, who was last seen disappearing to the far reaches of space after a confrontation with Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi). Star Wars: Ahsoka is the latest live-action series from Lucasfilm's creative duo of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.

Star Wars: Ahsoka premieres its first two episodes on Disney+ starting on August 23rd.

McDonald's Teases Being Part of Loki Season 2 https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/loki-season-2-mcdonalds-promo-marvel-studios/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 17:48:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw b7f772ce-eea1-4f92-bf7e-bc118108b534

McDonald's is loving the fact that its brand is making a big featured appearance in Marvel's Loki Season 2. If you haven't (been the one person who hasn't) seen the Loki Season 2 trailer, there is a sequence in it that has really caught on with fans: Loki (Tom Hiddleston) visits a reality where his cohort variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) is working in a vintage-style McDonald's restaurant.

The Loki Season 2 McDonald's connection has been teased since filming began on the second season, as fans wondered what could possibly bring the Gods of Mischief to the golden arch.

Well, McDonald's wouldn't give away even a single spoiler to help explain what's going on with Loki Season 2 - but their cryptic teaser certainly got a lot of attention (over 213K reached, and counting...). The teaser features a variety of different TV programs from sitcoms (Seinfeld, The Office) to anime (The Devil Is a Part-Timer!), to classic films (Coming to America, The Fifth Element) which each make mention of McDonald's or some parody of it.

More importantly: The McDonald's ad promises some kind of big surprise opening coming on August 14th - but the opening of what, we do not know. Loki Season 2 won't premiere on Disney+ on October 6th; presumably, McDonald's has some kind of tie-in promotion with the show: could we see a McDonald's meal inspired by Loki?

marvel-loki-season-2-mcdonalds-scene-promotional-teaser.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Studios)

Right now, Marvel Studios needs whatever creative marketing solutions they can find to promote their new TV shows and movies. The ongoing Writers' and Actors' Strike has shut down pretty much any of the traditional PR/marketing strategies that studios use to promote their works. Cast members cannot do any premieres, talk shows (which are not even running right now anyway), or other promotional events, making it hard to drum up awareness of new film or TV show's arrival. Sponsors like McDonald's may be the go-to avenue for studios' promotional needs in the near future, which will be interesting to measure. If promotional campaigns double as successful marketing campaigns, then actors could see at least one aspect of their job being lost for good.

Loki Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

Loki Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on October 6th.

The Exorcist Director William Friedkin Dead at 87 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-exorcist-director-william-friedkin-dead-at-87/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 17:13:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 7d381811-3f18-4d6c-baf7-968b9abbaa15 William Friedkin, who revolutionized the horror film with The Exorcist, has died. He was 87 years old. The filmmaker, whose best-known film is getting a legacy sequel this year to celebrate 50 years since its release, had continued to work in Hollywood until the end of his life, with his final film, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, set to debut at the Venice Film Festival later this year. His death was confirmed by Chapman University dean Stephen Galloway, a friend of Friedkin's wife Sherry Lansing, according to Variety, who first reported the news.

When The Exorcist, based on the best-selling book by William Peter Blatty, was released, it became a cultural phenomenon, changing horror forever, breaking box office records, and scooping up a shocking 10 Academy Award nominations, becoming the first horror film ever nominated for Best Picture.

Friedkin didn't just redefine horror, though; in 1973, the filmmaker made The French Connection, which remains one of the most acclaimed crime films ever made, and is still discussed for its iconic car chases. Over the years, he would make a wide variety of films, from mainstream popcorn fare to TV to arthouse movies, and later in life lamented the way that the superhero takeover of the box office had limited the types of movies that were able to get theatrical distribution.

In the 1970s, he also made the acclaimed thriller To Live and Die in L.A., and while he didn't direct as regularly for about a decade after that, his name is now associated with everything from Blue Chips and Killer Joe to TV shows like Tales From the Crypt and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Early in his career, before becoming a household name for cinemaphiles, Friedkin actually did a good deal of TV, himself estimating he made hundreds or even thousands of hours of content for the small screen. His documentary The People vs. Paul Crump helped elevate the profile of a famous murder case. Crump was convicted for killing a security guard during the armed robbery of a Chicago meatpacking plant in 1953, but later converted to Christianity in prison and became a model prisoner. He wrote a fictionalized version of his life as the novel Burn, Killer, Burn, after which his cause was taken up by anti-death penalty activists in the 1960s. They argued that if the real intent of incarceration was to reform, rather than punish, Crump had proven himself reformed. Ironically, the Friedkin documentary was never aired, although a few years later, there would be another -- The Chair -- that was part of the process that eventually got Crump a commutation of his death sentence.

Friedkin is survived by his children, Jackson and Cedric Friedkin, as well as his wife, film executive Sherry Lansing. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, collaborators, and fans.

Stranger Things: Will Byers Takes "Center Stage" in Final Season https://comicbook.com/horror/news/stranger-things-season-5-will-byers-focus-center-noah-schnapp/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 16:28:00 +0000 Patrick Cavanaugh 484ea426-11f6-4fea-bb48-140379858855

The event that kicked off the debut season of Stranger Things was the disappearance of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and his closest friends embarking on a quest to find him in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. Over the course of the next three seasons, Will struggled with trying to find his place among his friends and family, with creators of the series Matt and Ross Duffer teasing that the final season of the series will put prominence on Will once again. Due to the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes, it's unknown when production on Season 5 of Stranger Things could be moving forward.

"Will really takes center stage again in 5," Ross Duffer shared with Variety. "This emotional arc for him is what we feel is going to hopefully tie the whole series together. Will is used to being the young one, the introverted one, the one that's being protected. So part of his journey, it's not just sexuality -- it's Will coming into his own as a young man."

Despite his disappearance igniting the events of the series, Season 1 largely saw Will being incapacitated in the Upside Down. Upon his rescue, Seasons 2 and 3 saw Will struggling to connect with his friends, due in large part to how much they had been through together while attempting to save him. In Season 4, Will struggled not only with that feeling of being an outsider, but also his own sexuality, largely centered around his unrequited feelings for Finn Wolfhard's Mike Wheeler.

Ever since Will's rescue, the character has exhibited bizarre after-effects of his time in the Upside Down, with some of these symptoms also being witnessed by other characters. In the Season 4 finale of Stranger Things, the rift between the real world and the Upside Down saw the two realities start to overlap, with Will specifically feeling attuned to the dark forces of the otherworldly dimension.

These comments echo remarks that Schnapp himself made last year about Will.

"I can just tell you that I'm very very excited for what's to come. I think they did a great job with Will's character this season, and beautifully addressed everything they needed to," Schnapp shared with Forbes in December of 2022. "The way they closed the show is just perfect -- the story started with Will, and it'll end with Will."

Stay tuned for updates on the final season of Stranger Things.

Doctor Who's Yasmin Finney Comments on Inheriting the Rose Name https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/doctor-who-cast-yasmin-finney-rose/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 12:58:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett 4f493369-d15c-4e00-9035-ff92af79cce3

After her breakout role in Netflix's Heartstopper, Yasmin Finney joins the Doctor Who universe as a character with a notable name. Finney's character is named "Rose," a name she shares with Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), the first companion of Doctor Who's modern era, who traveled with the Ninth (Christopher Eccleston) and Tenth (David Tennant) Doctors. Though Finney's Rose is a new character and not a recasting of Rose Tyler, it is hard to brush off the shared name as mere coincidence, especially with showrunner Russell T Davies, who created Rose Tyler, involved. In a pre-SAG-AFTRA strike interview with Elle, Finney indicates that she and everyone else involved with the production is fully aware of the name's legacy in Doctor Who.

"I mean it's obviously got a lot of history, hasn't it?" she says. "To play a character with such history, even just the name, you've got that pressure instantly that I didn't have with Elle. It was a complete mind-blowing experience when I got cast. I can't really relive it because I was so in the moment. At first, [the show] had a code name, and then I found out what the show was and I was like, 'Oh my God, I've just been cast in Doctor Who.' It's a trans character as well, and it's such a blessing as well to be able to play such a monumental character like Rose."

Doctor Who 60th-Anniversary Specials

As for what fans can expect from the three Doctor Who 60th-anniversary specials in November, Finney says, "You can look forward to a lot of scary things. I think when you think of Doctor Who, you think of the scariest episode, the weeping angels. It's the scariest episode in history and the most popular. I think in this series, I was scared when I saw some of the things. It's shivers down your spine. But, I can't tell you too much. What I can say is it is going to be full of scares, full of laughs, full of all of it. To act with Ncuti Gatwa is just amazing because we are both very young as well, and it's just really nice to have that. He's making history literally, and I'm just really happy to be a part of his world."

When will Doctor Who return?

Doctor Who will return in November for three 60th-anniversary specials starring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate also returns as the Doctor's former companion Donna Noble.

Ncuti Gatwa's first full episode as the Fifteenth Doctor will the 2023 Christmas Special. Doctor Who Season 14 will follow sometime in 2024. Fans can get new adventures featuring Billie Piper as Rose Tyler in the next installment of Rose Tyler: The Dimension Cannon.

Twisted Metal: Is SPOILER Really Dead? https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/twisted-metal-season-1-ending-sweet-tooth-death-real-spoilers/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 05:50:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely fda93742-9a15-4522-9fc0-3661a16246e8

Peacock's live-action Twisted Metal adaptation builds a brand new world for the beloved franchise, but populates with plenty of characters that longtime fans know and love. Sweet Tooth, the game's most iconic character, is basically the mascot for the entire Twisted Metal franchise, and a big selling point for the show was bringing the psychotic clown to life. Throughout the first season of the Peacock series, quite a few classic Twisted Metal characters make an impact, and it should come as no surprise that some of them don't survive long enough to see the final credits. That said, there is one major Twisted Metal character that fans should expect back in the future, despite the fact that they're seemingly killed in the season finale.

WARNING: This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for the first season of Twisted Metal! Continue reading at your own risk...

The Season 1 finale of Twisted Metal kicks off with a giant car battle featuring most of the show's major characters, emulating the battle style from the video games. Near the end of the sequence, Sweet Tooth is seemingly killed. He gets shot in the eye at close range, but that isn't quite enough to kill him. He hops from his ice cream truck and onto the hood of Agent Stone's SUV, before being knocked off and run over by another car (driven by Stu and Michael) going full speed.

Is there a post-credits scene in Twisted Metal?

We then see Sweet Tooth's mask on the ground, indicating that he might have died. It was a gnarly hit and it seemed impossible for any normal person to survive that, and the post-credits scene confirms the iconic car combatant is alive and well -- and more than pissed off. The scene shows Stu and Michael reunited and on the road, taking a relaxing break from driving before being terrorized by a still-breathing Sweet Tooth. The scene cuts as his machete comes out of nowhere, though we see blood splattering and a screaming Stu being dragged into the woods. It's safe to say this storyline will continue to play out in a second season.

It's hard to believe that Sweet Tooth would die after just one season of the Twisted Metal series. He's the most recognizable character and there is still plenty of story left for him to play a major role in Season 2. Even Stu and Michael questioned whether or not Sweet Tooth is dead, but they don't want to risk going back to find out. That was a mistake, as their failure to confirm if the body was lifeless ended up resulting in their reunion becoming bittersweet.

Sweet Tooth in Twisted Metal (2012)

In the 2012 edition of Twisted Metal, Sweet Tooth's story is all about revenge. That version of the story depicted Sweet Tooth as a psychotic spirit living within Marcus Kane. When Sweet Tooth finally took over, his murder spree began with Kane's family, though one of his daughter's managed to escape. Tracking her down became Sweet Tooth's obsession.

That story doesn't exist in the Twisted Metal show, as Sweet Tooth is revealed to be a former child actor who was sent to an asylum after murdering his co-star. But when you look at how Kane's daughter escaped, and you see the story is created for Sweet Tooth, it's easy to understand how it could tie to Stu in Twisted Metal Season 2.

Kane's daughter escaped by stabbing Sweet Tooth in the eye. He lost the eye and his mask reflected that change. At the end of the show's first season, Stu shoots Sweet Tooth in the eye in order to get away from him. Given how much Sweet Tooth saw Stu as a friend, he will see that move as the ultimate betrayal, and we already know he has no problem holding a grudge. Provided Sweet Tooth comes back (which seems like a given), he'll probably stop at nothing to find and kill Stu. He'll probably have a great new mask that makes him look even more terrifying.

What did you think of Twisted Metal's first season? Do you think Sweet Tooth will be back for revenge in Season 2? Let us know in the comments!

One Piece: Gear 5 Luffy vs. Kaido Fight Gets Perfect Ed, Edd n Eddy Remix https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-gear-5-luffy-kaido-fight-ed-edd-n-eddy/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 03:41:00 +0000 Nick Valdez 71b8ed21-0631-45c0-bc7b-baf902bfbd38

One Piece has officially broken through into a new era with Gear 5 Luffy's highly anticipated debut in the anime, and one awesome fan has given Gear 5 Luffy's fight with Kaido in the newest episode a perfect remix with Ed, Edd n Eddy! One of the big ways that Gear 5 Luffy is such a dramatically different transformation from the others is the fact that it's deemed "ridiculous" by the World Government. It means Luffy can do pretty much anything he wants in this form, and the rest of the world around him turns more into a wacky cartoon as a result.

This includes a slate of new cartoon like sound effects that further emphasize how much Gear 5 Luffy is changing the world around him in One Piece Episode 1071, and fans have shown their love for this new cartoonish style after seeing it in action in the fight against Kaido. Now artist @bromojumbo on Twitter has taken that to the next level by fusing the action with one of the most "cartoonish" cartoons out there with Ed, Edd n Eddy's perfect sound effects amping up Gear 5 Luffy even more. Check it out below:

Where to Watch One Piece Episode 1071

If you wanted to check out One Piece Episode 1071 for yourself, you can now find it (along with the rest of the back catalog) now streaming with Crunchyroll. One Piece Episode 1071 is titled "Luffy's Peak - Attained! Gear Five" and Toei Animation teases the episode as such, "An amusing heartbeat unleashed! Both his allies and enemies got involved and are astounded. Is that free and flexible power a ridiculous thing or a token of freedom?! Fortune comes in by a merry gate...of Nika. Here comes the Warrior of Liberation who transcends all imagination!"

As for Ed, Edd n Eddy, you can now find the classic Cartoon Network animated series streaming on Max. They tease the cartoon as such, "Ed, Edd n Eddy tells the story of three best friends, who band together to tackle life's most daunting challenge. Though they have the same first name and live on the same cul-de-sac in the suburbs, the three youths have very different personalities."

Twisted Metal: Season 1's Final Minutes Set Up Explosive Season 2 https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/twisted-metal-season-finale-set-up-season-2-twist-tournament/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 02:05:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 0d155a91-b6ad-4e06-9d87-4bc49a8aaef2

The live-action TV adaptation of Twisted Metal was released on Peacock last week, bringing the beloved video game franchise to life for the first time. The original games may not have had a ton of story to them, but the series is able to create an entire world out of what existed, taking fans to a dystopian version of America that has largely fallen into chaos over the span of 20 years. The first season -- which was released in its entirety -- fills the world with characters and dives deep into the journey of John Doe (Anthony Mackie) and Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz). In its final minutes, however, Twisted Metal sets up something totally different for its potential second season, something much closer to what fans of the game might have imagined.

WARNING: This story contains MAJOR SPOILERS from the first season of Twisted Metal! Continue reading at your own risk...

Twisted Metal Season 1 Ending

The driving force behind the plot in Twisted Metal Season 1 is John Doe attempting to earn his way into New San Francisco (a safe haven behind enormous walls) so he can live a peaceful, violence-free life. In order to do that, he has to make a dangerous run across the country to retrieve something for the city's leader, Raven (Neve Campbell). The premiere offers a hint that there's more to Raven's offer than meets the eye, and the final minutes of the season pull back the curtain to reveal what she has really been after the entire time.

When John tries to leave the city, Raven reveals her entire plan to him, one that puts him into a terrible situation. The various cities are going to take part in a deadly tournament that will pit the best drivers in the country against one another, killing each other with their cars until only one remains. Sound familiar?

The tournament Raven describes is essentially the same as the Twisted Metal games themselves. The tournament is even being put on by a mysterious, unseen character named Calypso. If you're familiar with the games, you know that Calypso is the canonical creator of the Twisted Metal contest.

Raven's goal is to win Twisted Metal (yes, it's the name of the tournament in the show), and she is using John to drive for her. Unfortunately for him, she's really left him without any choice. He'll enter the tournament against many of the other drivers that had been introduced throughout the first season, some of whom are close friends of John's.

Twisted Metal Season 2

Those final moments of Twisted Metal Season 1 set up a different kind of show for Season 2, but there's no guarantee just yet that fans will get to see that version of the show come to life.

Peacock hasn't announced a second season of Twisted Metal yet, but that shouldn't be too big of a surprise at this point. It also shouldn't be much of a concern for fans, at least not yet. Twisted Metal has only been out for a week, and the entire season was released at once. So many are still watching through the show and Peacock is still collecting viewership data on how many are actually tuning in. It's likely hard to tell at this point just how popular (or unpopular) Twisted Metal is.

What did you think of the first season of Twisted Metal? Are you hoping to see it renewed for Season 2? Let us know in the comments!

Ahsoka Star Rosario Dawson Teases Season 2 for Disney+ Star Wars Series https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/ahsoka-star-rosario-dawson-teases-season-2-for-disney-star-wars-series/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 23:22:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak e7df2c85-8c5d-4685-bc08-39d34929d746

Star Wars: Ahsoka is heading to Disney+ this month, and it will see Rosario Dawson playing the titular character after first playing her in Star Wars: The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. The Mandalorian has already been renewed for a fourth season, but the status of The Book of Boba Fett remains unclear. Recently, it was announced that Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni will be directing his own Star Wars film, and many are assuming it will serve as the climax to The Mandalorian in addition to Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Bett. That leaves some fans wondering if there will be another season of Ahsoka before the film. Before the SAG strike, Dawson spoke with Entertainment Weekly and teased a second season.

"If more comes next, I'd be really excited and grateful," Dawson shared. "I feel like every time I get to step into her shoes, I learn more. I experience what I could never experience otherwise, and I feel like I keep getting better."

Will Ahsoka Be In Dave Filoni's Star Wars Movie?

ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with Rosario Dawson before the SAG strike while she was promoting her new film, Haunted Mansion, and we asked if she knew anything about Filoni's film and whether or not she will be in it.

"No. I'm just so happy he got it," Dawson shared when asked if she knew about the project. "Honestly, my uncle is a comic book artist. That is not the average transition coming from animation and going into directing, and especially a film. For all the nerds, I think for the cons and stuff, this is just like, 'Ah!' kind of status. So, I'm just super stoked for him because it really could not happen to a better person. He's so talented and remarkable and awesome, and I love him. And I think what he learned in doing in animation, he's blowing out of the water in directing and live action. So, I'm, as a fan, excited to watch that movie, whether I'm in it or not."

She added, "And I hope I'm invited to set, regardless." You can watch Dawson talk about Filoni's project in the video above.

What Is Ahsoka About?

Yellowstone Star Has Grim Prediction for Fan Favorite Couple https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/yellowstone-kelly-reilly-grim-prediction-beth-rip/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 22:23:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 4663783d-d073-4662-8abe-0308ff9566fe

When it comes to Yellowstone, the love story between Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler is easily a fan favorite and the Season 4 finale finally saw a major, happy development between the pair with an impromptu wedding that finally saw the pair tie the knot. But with Yellowstone headed into its final episodes when the series eventually returns for the back half of Season 5, series star Kelly Reilly isn't too sure Beth and Rip will have a happily ever after. In a featurette included in the Season 5 Part 1 Blu-ray and DVD release of Yellowstone, Reilly cast doubt on Beth and Rip's future due largely in part to secrets from Beth's past.

"Beth is haunted by her past," Reilly said (via Insider). "She has a lot of regrets and she has a lot of secrets that he doesn't know. So, there is something that is under the surface that will one day, I'm sure, come, and she's probably certain that she will lose him."

Reilly went on to talk about Beth's guilt and insecurities when it comes to her relationship with Rip, but then went on to make a grim prediction, that all of Beth's past is ultimately going to culminate into something that Rip won't be able to handle.

"He doesn't know any of that, and she's protecting him," Reilly said. "So, there's a weighted burden in her heart that he cannot share with him. He's trying to reassure her and love her, but he doesn't know the truth."

Reilly Also Revealed She Doesn't Always Agree With Showrunner Taylor Sheridan

Also in the featurette, Reilly revealed that she has her own hopes and thoughts for Beth -- and she sometimes wishes for other things for Beth than what Sheridan gives the character.

"I'm coming to it almost the same as the audience," Reilly said. "I mean, I have my hopes and thoughts for the character. Also, as I've played her for over five years now, I feel like I know her so well, but I'm still learning."

She continued, "There are still things that I read and I didn't expect, or sometimes I wish for something else for her, but that's the same as the audience. We're all sort of beholden to the vision of the storyteller and we serve the story. Who knows what's going to happen? I find that exciting as an actor."

What's Going on With Season 5 of Yellowstone?

Season 5 of Yellowstone went on hiatus earlier this year. Currently, Season 5 of Yellowstone is not yet complete. The back half of the season was initially announced to air sometime this summer, but production on new episodes has not yet started. However, series star Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, recently said that fans can expect the remaining episodes to focus on many of the series' core themes of love and family.

"Love and family and serve your tribe, your people -- that's a huge theme in the show," Grimes said. "With Kacey, he has a hard time choosing his relationship with his father versus his relationship with his wife and son. I think it's because it all really matters and it matters to all of the characters."

He went on to explain that it's within those themes where all the "juicy drama" is.

"That's sort of where you get all of this really juicy drama, is that everyone is sort of fighting for their team," he said. "There's no right team or wrong team, it's just a bunch of people trying to figure out how to do what's best for their own."

Yellowstone Will Air on CBS This Fall

After airing its first four-and-a-half seasons on the Paramount Network, Yellowstone will make its network debut this fall. CBS will air episodes of the acclaimed series on Sunday nights, beginning with the very first season. On Thursday, the network released its full fall TV premiere schedule, letting fans know exactly when Yellowstone would begin airing.

The Yellowstone run on CBS will begin on Sunday, September 17th. Additional episodes of the show will air every Sunday night, though how many depends on the football schedule. If CBS airs a double-header for the NFL that day, there will only be one Yellowstone episode. On days when CBS only airs one game, Yellowstone will air back-to-back episodes.

Which Anime Series Are Better Than Their Manga? https://comicbook.com/anime/news/anime-better-than-manga/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 21:28:00 +0000 Megan Peters edd6b5fe-8b49-4bb9-b749-736d8f614671

There is a lot of anime out there to watch. Over the years, thousands of shows have flooded television networks and streaming services. From slice-of-life romps to dramatic romances, you can find anything you want in anime. A great number of these series make it to television after succeeding in print, and for a select few shows, these anime titles end up becoming something better than their source material.

It isn't often a show manages to outdo its manga, but it has happened a number of times. From classic shonen titles to recent thrillers, some stories have thrived on the air in ways its source material never managed. So if you want to check out some of these rare titles, you can check out our anime breakdown below:

----

Spy x Family

  • Spy x Family: As one of the newest shows on this list, Spy x Family has gone above and beyond with its anime. While its episodic manga features gorgeous artwork and cute characters, there is something about the cohesiveness of the Spy x Family anime that gives it an edge. Plus, there is no doubt Anya Forger levels up the hit series with her adorable voice and quirks!
  • Where to Watch: Hulu, Crunchyroll

Mob Psycho 100

  • Mob Psycho 100: Created by ONE, the Mob Psycho 100 web-comic is a cult hit, and Studio Bones took it to new heights with its anime. If you did not know, Mob Psycho 100 is regarded as one of the studio's best shows to date, and its colorful animation knows no equal. Mob's character growth is so special to see play out in real time, so we cannot recommend Mob Psycho 100 enough.
  • Where to Watch: Hulu, Crunchyroll

Yu Yu Hakusho

  • Yu Yu Hakusho: There is no denying that Yu Yu Hakusho is a classic. The shonen series put creator Yoshihiro Togashi on the map, and the creator helped turn the anime into something truly special. With fleshed-out character arcs and vital original plot lines, the Yu Yu Hakusho anime is the definite telling of Togashi's beloved tale.
  • Where to Watch: Hulu, Funimation, Crunchyroll, Tubi

Made in Abyss

  • Made in Abyss: You might not think Made in Abyss would be so dark by its cute art style but then you'd be wrong. The hit series is scarring at best, and much of its devastation comes from the anime's pacing. From its voicing acting to its narrative arrangement, the Made in Abyss anime is a totally different beast from its manga, and it is one we prefer, no question.
  • Where to Watch: Amazon Prime, HIDIVE, Crunchyroll

Haikyuu

  • Haikyuu: Sports stories are hugely popular in manga, and there is something so satisfying seeing them come to life on screen. The tension and motion needed to drive excitement feels more real on television somehow, and Haikyuu is the perfect example of this. Paired with some incredible scores, the matches of Haikyuu soar on screen, so the show definitely has an edge over its manga.
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll

K-On

  • K-On: What is a music manga without music? There are tons of music-centric series in print, and while they may be compelling to read, they are that much better when put to screen. With music at its back, shows like K-On come to life as intended when turned into an anime, and it makes the manga shine in turn. So if you like idol series, then you better be binging their anime adaptations ASAP.
  • Where to Watch: Crunchyroll, HIDIVE

Monthly Girls Nozaki

  • Monthly Girls Nozaki: It can be hard to nail comedy anime adaptations, but Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun does it with ease. The show may have short episodes, but it delivers much-needed context to the manga's original four-panel design. From its leads to its extras, this anime gives all its characters room to breathe, and that makes the rom-com hit even harder with its jokes.
  • Where to Watch: HIDIVE, Crunchyroll

Usagi Drop

  • Usagi Drop: Sometimes, an anime needs to know when to end. Usagi Drop is a cute father-daughter tale on the screen, and its cute narrative is an easy watch for anyone. This already makes it far superior to the Usagi Drop manga which ends up turning its father-daughter into a couple after a time skip. There are some things we don't need to see, and the Usagi Drop anime knew that when it wrapped its story where it did. Enough said.
  • Where to Watch: Tubi, Crunchyroll

Gintama

  • Gintama: There are few parodies in anime as beloved as Gintama. The shonen series loves to comment on the industry as a whole, and its manga spent ages drafting these jokes. Once it came to television, Gintama took on new life as its cast truly elevated Gintoki's gang in ways readers never expected. So if you have not yet checked out this adaptation, do so soon!
  • Where to Watch: Hulu, Crunchyroll

Hunter x Hunter

  • Hunter x Hunter: Another Togashi hit made it to this list after Yu Yu Hakusho, and we have Hunter x Hunter to thank. This franchise is hugely popular with readers, and manga fans love Hunter x Hunter for its intricate story. However, there is something about its 2011 anime that streamlines all its tangents. Togashi's love of exposition is distilled for television, and the Hunter x Hunter anime is a smooth watch as such. So if you struggle to take in the manga's dialogue, we recommend binging Hunter x Hunter ASAP.
  • Where to Watch: Netflix, Tubi, Pluto, Crunchyroll, The Roku Channel, Hulu

What do you think about this list of must-watch shows? Are there any anime missing from this breakdown? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: What To Watch, Play, and Read Next https://comicbook.com/movies/news/teenage-mutant-ninja-turtles-tmnt-mutant-mayhem-2023-movies-shows-comics-games/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 21:11:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett d4816afa-55e3-41f4-8ade-eea661b61112

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem opened in theaters this weekend and is off to a stellar start worldwide. The Seth Rogen-produced and co-written film put a fresh spin on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which began life as Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird's indie comics sensation. It then became a multimedia franchise that is now nearing its 40th anniversary. Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon have already announced plans for a second Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie, most likely featuring a certain iconic villain mostly missing from the first film, as well as two seasons of a Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series on Paramount+ bridging the gap between the two movies.

But for those looking for more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles goodness as soon as they leave the movie theaters, parsing four decades of TMNT games, movies, TV shows, and comics can be a little intimidating. Where to help out and point you in the direction of your next favorite piece of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles media in each of those categories. Grab your ninja weapon of choice and let's begin:

(Photo: Netflix)

What show to watch: Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Part of the charm of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is seeing the Turtles depicted as "actual teenagers" trying to figure out who they are, what they want, and what their place is in the world. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is the TMNT television series that comes closest to matching that tone. It presents the Turtles as still raw and figuring out their team dynamic (Raphael leads the team instead of Leonardo). The show ran for two seasons (which are streaming on Paramount+) and culminated in Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (streaming on Netflix).

Keep watching?: The 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, which launched the "Turtlemania" era, will soon be airing on Nickelodeon. The show's plots don't hold up very well, but the characterizations are character-defining (Donatello does machines, Michelangelo is a party due, etc.) and the zany humor is charming. If you want a series with more mature storytelling, try either the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which is still the closest adaptation of Eastman and Laird's original comics, or the 2012 Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which used CG animation. Both shows were recently re-released on Blu-ray and are streaming on Paramount+.

What movie to watch: Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated movie, which adapts a comic book with the same premise, is better than it has any right to be. The plot is pretty simple: Shredder and the Foot Clan are working with a mysterious partner and making moves in Gotham. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles head to Gotham to investigate and run afoul of Batman. A top-notch voice cast makes the interactions between the various characters genuinely funny, and the script wisely jettisons the comic's convoluted explanation for how the Ninja Turtles and the Batman Family are existing in the same universe and instead focuses on the essentials. The movie earns its PG-13 rating with surprisingly brutal violence accompanied by blood, meaning parents and older viewers might do well to make sure younger viewers are prepared for that. Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles isn't streaming anywhere but is available to rent on demand. It's also available on physical media, including a 4k UlHD Blu-ray release.

Movie marathon: You could always watch all of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies in order. Otherwise, the original live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie put a surprisingly dark and gritty spin on a franchise that was mostly known for being a toy-selling cartoon behemoth and it holds up well today. Its first sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze, is a movie goofy enough to be a fun time, with vibes closer to the 1987 cartoon, down to the unforgettable "Ninja Rap" needle drop. Both films are streaming on Paramount+ and Max. If you'd like to stick to animated movies, 2007's TMNT was the franchise's first attempt at 3D animation. It acts as a sequel to the original live-action trilogy but stands alone well enough, beginning with Shredder already defeated and the Ninja Turtles divided and directionless until a new threat emerges. The movie remains divisive to this day, and while I'm personally not a fan, its proponents swear by it, meaning it may be worth checking out on Paramount+ or Max.

What game to Play: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge is, as our review suggests, a loving homage to classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time and, for my money, one of the best games of 2022. Shredder's Revenge perfectly modernizes the core gameplay of those TMNT arcade classics while updating the elements that haven't aged well or only ever worked when someone was plunking quarters into a machine. It has gorgeous retro graphics, a story mode, countless ways to customize your play experience, and an incredible soundtrack with talents like Mike Patton and Ghostface Killah contributing. The game is available to play on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and even PC, Linux, and, for Netflix users, mobile devices. On top of all of that, the upcoming Dimension Shellshock DLC will add a new game mode, new looks for all of the existing characters, and new playable characters, including longtime TMNT crossover ally Miyamoto Usagi from Usagi Yojimbo.

Continue?: If you'd rather play the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games, then check out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The collection includes 13 games that Konami produced during the height of Turtlemania in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time, complete with online multiplayer. With its extensive archives of promotional material and design documents, it's an impressively comprehensive collection that should please any old-school Turtles fan and gamer.

What comic to read: IDW Publishing's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began in comics, and there are plenty of quality ones to choose from. If there's one we'd recommend for longtime fans and newcomers alike it's IDW Publishing's ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and its spinoffs, which has been going since 2011. IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is set in a distinct universe separate from any other iteration, which allows it to take the best of every version of the Turtles and bring them together in a way that feels cohesive, with stories that have stakes and meaning. It's been one of my favorite comics to follow for years and I can't recommend it enough to anyone who likes long-form comics storytelling. The best way to read the series is via the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The IDW Collection series of volumes, which collect the entire main Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ongoing series and all of its spinoffs and satellite series into their proper reading order. IDW has been reprinting the collection from the beginning in a more affordable paperback format, which makes it the perfect time to start reading. However, if even that sounds like too much of an investment, you can pick up the main series trade paperbacks to get the core story, beginning with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 1: Change is Constant. Alternatively, if you want to get caught up with the series more quickly, start with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Reborn, Vol. 1 - From The Ashes, which begins collecting the series where Sophie Campbell took over as its main writer following a massive shift in the Ninja Turtles' status quo.

Further reading: If you'd prefer something self-contained, check out the hugely popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, which is set in a dark future and serves as an ending to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' story (sequel notwithstanding). It couldn't be further from Mutant Mayhem in terms of tone, but it is based on an original, unproduced idea that Eastman and Laird came up with during their original run, which makes it even more essential for diehard fans. If you want lighter fare, IDW's recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures tells new stories based on the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. If you want more of the non-turtle mutants from Mutant Mayhem, look for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures, collecting the surprisingly good Archie Comics Ninja Turtles series from the 1990s, which features those characters prominently. It's hard to find in print these days but is easily available in digital form. Finally, Eastman and Laird's original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics are excellent and it's almost a shame that they are sometimes overshadowed by the franchise that they spawned. Readers can find those comics in IDW's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Ultimate Collection series.

Did we miss anything? Let us know what Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics, movies, games, or shows you'd recommend! after seeing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem marks the latest movie in the long-running media franchise, and a new reboot for four turtle brothers. Seth Rogen produced the movie and lends his voice to its huge ensemble cast. In the film, the titular heroes venture out into the real world after years of living isolated in the sewers. Though they try to be recognized as normal teenagers by their heroics, a crime syndicate with an army of mutants makes everything more difficult for them and threatens their plans for joining the society. The voice cast for the film includes Micah Abbey as Donatello, Shamon Brown Jr. as Michelangelo, Nicolas Cantu as Leonardo, and Brady Noon as Raphael. TMNT: Mutant Mayhem includes a slew of celebrities as well like Ayo Edebiri as April O'Neil, Jackie Chan as Splinter, Seth Rogen as Bebop, John Cena as Rocksteady, Ice Cube as Superfly, Giancarlo Esposito as Baxter Stockman, Paul Rudd as Mondo Gecko, and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem opened in theaters on August 2nd.

Good Omens Season 2 Debuts As #1 Comedy on Prime Video https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/good-omens-season-2-debuts-as-1-comedy-on-prime-video/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 21:04:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 4eb7e2cd-44e2-495b-9107-a092950f5af5

The second season of Good Omens is now streaming on Prime Video, and the fact that it ends on a pretty big cliffhanger has left some fans extremely nervous. Good Omens author and series writer Neil Gaiman has explained that the second season is actually a bridge between the book and his original sequel idea, and that he already has the third season mapped out. However, Prime Video has yet to announce another season, and Gaiman has said it needs fans' help in order to be renewed. Well, fans can rest a little easier, because the official Good Omens account took to social media yesterday to reveal the show is currently the number one comedy on the streaming site. While there's still no word on a renewal (and there probably won't be until the WGA and SAG strikes are over), it's a relief to know Good Omens' second season is doing well.

"Ineffably amusing indeed! Cheers to Good Omens Season 2 debuting as the #1 Comedy on @primevideo," Prime shared. Hilariously, many fans have taken to the comments to question the use of "comedy" considering the season ended on a pretty devastating cliffhanger.

"COMEDY? Are you guys joking or what? Cause I want to throw myself off a cliff," one fan joked. "I was so funny that I couldn't stop crying for 15 minutes, and I thought about the last episode all week," another added. However, some fans are defending the show's comedy status. "Yall completely forgot this was a comedy just because of a closing scene???? If 90% of it is comedic, it's a comedy. Comedies also have emotional moments. I was sad too but yall are REALLY saying this isn't a comedy for the last 15 mins of the show????" one fan argued. You can check out the post below:

Michael Sheen and David Tennant on Good Omens Season 3:

ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with Tennant and Sheen before the SAG strike, and they addressed the possibility of a third season.

"Well, it's not in our gift," Tennant said when asked if fans will be seeing Crowley and Aziraphale again. "Yeah. If it was up to us, that would be one thing, but..." Sheen added. "I mean, hopefully, let's just hope that enough people watch Season 2 to make it ineffable," he joked, using the show's famous line. "Inevitable," he coyly corrected.

We also asked the duo if there are any time periods they would want to explore in Season 3.

"Well, there's lots, isn't there?" Sheen replied. "There's all sorts of possibilities, aren't there?" Tennant added. "I mean, we love doing those different time period scenes as well," Sheen continued. "They're such fun to do ... Partly because of the dressing up nature of it, but also because it does show little bits of the relationship and little aspects of the characters and how they've developed. And it's so wonderful to do."

"It might be nice to see '80s Aziraphale and Crowley," Tennant chimed in. "Oh yes," Sheen agreed. "I'd almost certainly be dressed as some sort of Gordon Gekko [Michael Douglas in Wall Street] figure," Tennant shared. "And I would be very [the British pop group] Haircut 100," Sheen suggested.

We also threw out the suggestion of Flock of Seagulls, which was another '80s band with a signature hairstyle. "That would be him. He'd have the Flock of Seagulls haircut," Sheen said of Tennant.

Good Omens Season 2 is now streaming on Prime.

I Am Groot Season 2 Trailer Released https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/i-am-groot-season-2-trailer-disney-plus-marvel-studios/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 20:10:00 +0000 Charlie Ridgely 326517ce-36aa-4028-afe3-eeb2c256b95c

Groot may have grown into his biggest form by the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but that doesn't mean we're anywhere close to seeing the end of Baby Groot's adventures. The small and adorable version of Groot is the one feature in Marvel Studios' I Am Groot, a series of shorts on Disney+. The first series of I Am Groot shorts arrived around this time last year. On Sunday, Marvel Studios announced the released date for the second season of the series, revealing the first look at the new episodes in the process.

Sunday saw Marvel and Disney release a trailer for I Am Groot Season 2. The second installment of the shorts series consists of five episodes, all of which will debut on Disney+ on September 6th. You can check out the trailer below!

The trailer for I Am Groot Season 2 shows the titular Guardian spending some time on his own, exploring the small and unseen corners of the galaxy that only he would notice. In addition to playing with action figures, the trailer shows Groot checking out an ice cream ship and flying by the Watcher.

I Am Groot's Place in the MCU

Last year, Marvel Studios animated producer Brad Winderbaum opened up about what the existence of the multiverse allows the company to do with animation, and how Groot is able to carve out his own corner of the saga with I Am Groot.

"I think what's amazing about the Multiverse Saga in particular is that you can go down so many more roads," Winderbaum told Variety. "We've experimented at the studio for a long time about telling stories that take place in a linear fashion, but also going back in time, and being able to show how the MCU can blossom in the past. But what the multiverse does, it allows us to look at alternate paths and other takes on the characters, which is, of course, what happens in the comic books as different artists, different writers, different storytellers work with characters. You see them expanding and growing in unforeseen, unexpected ways. And that's something that is our guiding light as we make more animated projects."

"It's fun to see what he does when nobody's looking," he added. "Like an actual kid, that's where he gets into the most trouble - when he's right outside the realm of parental eyes. That's part of the shorts you kind of identify with, or at least I do. You watch it and I remember what it was like to be a kid, and the other side of me is, 'Oh, that's what it's like to be a parent, watching a kid and worrying they're going to be doing something terrible.'"

Are you looking forward to Season 2 of I Am Groot? Let us know in the comments!

One Piece: Luffy's Gear 5 Episode Really Broke the Internet https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-gear-5-episode/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 19:40:00 +0000 Megan Peters 001c3189-5bec-4188-81fa-5aaae43d91af

One Piece really is a global phenomenon. After decades on the scene, the manga and anime continue to dominate sales across the world. Though seen as a hard sell in the United States years ago, Luffy and the Straw Hat crew have tons of stateside fans now, and that number is only growing. That much was made clear this weekend as One Piece episode 1071 just went live to global fanfare, and the demand for Gear 5 Luffy really did break the Internet.

If you don't know what all the fuss is about One Piece, well - we are here to break things down. This week marks the debut of One Piece episode 1071, and the release put Gear 5 Luffy on the global stage. After more than a year of waiting, the One Piece anime got around to adapting Gear 5 Luffy at last, and the whole affair was hyped by Toei Animation. So of course, anticipation was high to watch the big premiere.

And so what did fans do? They made sure to be on Crunchyroll and other streaming services like Hulu well before One Piece dropped. This influx led to major outages at Crunchyroll as here you can see here. At the time the One Piece episode debuted in Japan (not in the United States), users were already indicating outage issues. And when episode 1071 did go live, more than 8000 outage reports flooded in for Crunchyroll.

And to be honest, even piracy sites went down. One Piece fans who tried to find illicit means of watching Gear 5 Luffy's debut were thwarted. The big One Piece premiere took everything down, and while these technical limitations have been resolved, One Piece is still in headlines. The anime has been trending globally for more than 24 hours, and Luffy was even gifted his own Gear 5 emoji on Twitter.

Obviously, the hype for One Piece is high, and Luffy's new Gear form has only heightened the hit show's profile. This timing is great considering all of the things One Piece has in store. As its manga moves through its final act, Netflix's One Piece TV series is set to debut at the end of this month. With all these projects in mind, there has never been a better time to be a One Piece fan. So if you want to learn more about the seafaring shonen, you can read its official synopsis below for all the info!

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Shares New Shibuya Character Designs https://comicbook.com/anime/news/jujutsu-kaisen-season-2-shibuya-arc-character-art/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 19:10:00 +0000 Megan Peters 33be7d9d-d864-4495-a0a1-beab711e4726

Jujutsu Kaisen is gearing up for its biggest anime arc yet. The show made its return to television this summer with an arc focused on Gojo's past, but that storyline just came to a close. It is now time for Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 to tackle the manga's Shibuya arc, and the anime just posted new character art for the story.

As you can see below, the team at MAPPA Studios released the character art for Jujutsu Kaisen's Shibuya arc earlier today. The artwork put three major players together ahead of their showdown with jujutsu society. Geto, Mahito, and Choso can all be seen here. And yes, they are ready to slaughter any sorcerer in their way.

jujutsu-kaisen.jpg
(Photo: MAPPA )

To the left, Geto can be seen in his usual outfit with his long hair pulled back. Donning navy robes and a green shift, Geto is just as formidable as ever, and Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 spent its first half breaking down the sorcerer's power. As for Mahito, the deranged villain is prepared for war in his usual black ensemble while Choso looks collected in his draft. Dressed in purple and white, the half-curse human will be taking on Yuji before much longer.

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will be on a break this coming week, but when it returns, MAPPA Studios will bring the Shibuya arc to life. Geto set the whole fiasco in motion when he challenged Gojo to the duel before his apparent death, and the war will be jujutsu society on the line. From a political and power standpoint, the next arc of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 will change the status quo of the anime. So if you aren't caught up with the show, we recommend you get binging ASAP.

If you want to brush up on Jujutsu Kaisen, the anime is streaming on Crunchyroll right now. For more details on the series, you can read its official synopsis here: "For some strange reason, Yuji Itadori, despite his insane athleticism would rather just hang out with the Occult Club. However, her soon finds out that the occult is as real as it gets when his fellow club members are attacked! Meanwhile, the mysterious Megumi Fushiguro is tracking down a special-grade cursed object, and his search leads him to Itadori..."

What do you think about Jujutsu Kaisen's upcoming arc? Are you excited for the Shibuya storyline to debut? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

The Powerpuff Girls Get a Modern Makeover in New Fan-Made Tribute: Watch https://comicbook.com/anime/news/the-powerpuff-girls-reanimated-cartoon/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 18:54:00 +0000 Megan Peters ce6ce613-36cf-4f2e-8bc0-3287f9da1397

The Powerpuff Girls made their debut decades ago, but their legacy lives on. From live-action projects to K-pop collabs, the show's animated superheroes are still incredibly popular. With the IP's nostalgia at a high, The Powerpuff Girls fandom recently came together to pay homage to Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup. So if you want to see an updated take on a Powerpuff Girls classic jam, you can watch The Powderpuff Girls Reanimate above!

The unofficial revival takes The Powerpuff Girls and gives it a modern twist with help from some talented fans. Done in all sorts of art styles, this fan-project reanimates The Powerpuff Girls as they perform a classic song from the cartoon. Of course, the single is none other than "Love Makes the World Go Round", and fans will remember this jam from an old-school episode of the series.

When "Mime for a Change" was released, it saw our three heroines take the stage to perform this song. The track, which was written by David Smith, went on to become a sort-of anthem for The Powerpuff Girls fandom. The song has been stuck in our heads since 1999, and now this reanimated project is giving the classic single new life.

You can watch the full tribute above as one of the project's leads Breanna Watson shared it online. The fan-made video proves the love for The Powerpuff Girls is thriving, and that is impressive given the show debuted in 1998. The show's core themes of family and girl power remain as important today as ever, so it is no surprise to see how much love the Powerpuff Girls get to this day. And of course, you can catch up on the show today quite easily thanks to streaming.

After all, Cartoon Network still airs The Powerful Girls on cable while streamers like Max and Netflix have its catalog available online. For more details on the hit Cartoon Network series, you can read its full synopsis below:

"In the city of Townsville, the frustrated Professor Utonium is gathering all the ingredients to make a perfect little girl (sugar, spice, and everything nice). But when his lab assistant, a monkey named Jojo, causes the accidental addition of Chemical X to the mix, the Professor ends up with not one but 3 perfect, powerful little girls. It soon becomes obvious that Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are not normal girls, they have superpowers and have not yet learned to control. The girls are treated like outcasts because they have inadvertently wrecked Townsville in a superpowered game of tag. To win the hearts of the people of Townsville, the girls are tricked into making a deal with Jojo who plans to take over Townsville. As the girls foil this threat and defeat an army of superpowered monkeys, the Powerpuff Girls learn that with great power comes great responsibility."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Finale Clip Released https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/strange-new-world-star-trek-season-2-episode-10-snw/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 16:48:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett 23777689-988c-47e3-8205-15c4d23b5ab4 Now that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode is in the rearview (and its soundtrack available to stream), it's time to turn Star Trek fans' attentions towards the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 finale episode, "Hegemony," a title hinting at the return of the Gorn. The Gorn's return is confirmed in the first clip from the episode that debuted on the most recent installment of Star Trek's aftershow, The Ready Room, hosted by Wil Wheaton. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 premiere episode included a shot hinting at the Gorn heading into Federation space, and it seems that's the conflict in the finale.

The clip from the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 finale episode sees the USS Enterprise crew discover the wreckage of the USS Cayuga, the ship commanded by Captain Batel, who is involved in a relationship with Captain Pike. The Enterprise's search for survivors is hampered by Gorn interference, and a Gorn hunter ship soon appears. The Enterprise then receives a message from Starfleet informing them that the Gorn have claimed the space around the planet and ordering the Enterprise crew to remain on their side of the Gorn's demarcation line. Based on how the clip end, Pike seems unlikely to give up on finding Batel and her crew that easily. You can watch the clip below.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Cast

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, and Ethan Peck as Spock, reprising the roles they first played in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2. The series also stars Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Christina Chong as La'An Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, and Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M'Benga. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 brings back special guest star Paul Wesley as James Kirk and adds Carol Kane in the recurring role of Pelia. In addition to the season's musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody," Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 also featured a crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks, guest starring Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome.

CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment produced Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2. Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are co-showrunners. Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Jenny Lumet, Henry Alonso Myers, Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth serve as executive producers.

How to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 debuts new episodes on Thursdays on Paramount+ in the United States, the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Netflix's One Piece Exec Reveals the Two Things Eiichiro Oda Demanded https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-netflix-eiichiro-oda-demands/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 16:31:00 +0000 Megan Peters 7560ae5d-10bb-445c-b5a0-f31c143a147f

The wait for Netflix's One Piece is almost over. The show is slated to drop at the end of this month, and of course, all eyes are on the Straw Hat crew. Luffy and his team are living large ahead of their live-action debut now that its countdown has begun. And in a recent interview, the showrunner of Netflix's One Piece shared the two demands series creator Eiichiro Oda had for the project.

Recently, Shueisha posted new info about One Piece ahead of its launch, and it was there showrunner Matt Owens spoke up. The executive said Oda had a number of requests for the live-action adaptation, but there were two major things the creator wanted to vet about Netflix's show.

The first? Owens said Oda was set on keeping the Straw Hats' backstories the same. "They're so pivotal to who they are as people, what their dreams and motivations are, and how Luffy digs into that as he meets them and helps them rediscover those dreams."

And for the second demand, Oda focused on the characters' different abilities. "Specific devil fruit powers and other skill sets were all carefully crafted by Oda and a lot of imagination went into what different people can do and what the rules are with that," Owen shared. This means we can expect to see plenty of showy fights at Netflix's One Piece works through its first season. So if you are ready to watch the live-action adaptation, get ready! The project is expected to drop at the end of August 2023.

If you are not familiar with One Piece, you can always brush up on the series ahead of Netflix's big launch. The adaptation will bring the manga's East Blue saga to life, so you can watch the One Piece anime on Hulu and Crunchyroll for updates. As for the manga, One Piece can be read online courtesy of the Shonen Jump app or Manga Plus. So for more info on the series, you can read its official synopsis below:

"As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer "Red-Haired" Shanks. But Luffy's life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber...at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure...one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary "One Piece," said to be the greatest treasure in the world..."

What do you think about Oda's requests for One Piece? Are you going to be watching Netflix's adaptation? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

Digimon Got Away With a NSFW Easter Egg Years Ago https://comicbook.com/anime/news/digimon-anime-movie-nsfw-poster/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 16:06:00 +0000 Megan Peters 097a0c41-628b-477d-ad70-82f06f4a3bbc

Digimon has been around for decades now, and it is only growing. Back in the day, kids across the globe tuned in to watch Tai and the gang go on adventures, and those once-young fans have now grown into adults. Their nostalgia for all things Digimon is real, and this had led to a surge in popularity as of late. This push can be seen very easily with Digimon Adventure 02, and thanks to its comeuppance, fans are finally noticing a NSFW detail in the anime.

The whole thing came to light on social media after fans reviewed Digimon Adventure 02: Revenge of Diaboromon. The movie, which went live in Japan back in 2001, made its U.S. launch years later. The English dub went live in August 2005, and it brought Diaboromon to life. When Tai, Kari, and others are trapped in the Internet by the beat, it falls to the 02 team to save them. The group gets to work saving their friends in the Digital World all while fighting off Diaboromon in the Real World.

In the end, the DigiDestined are able to send the vengeful monster back to the Digital World, so this action-packed plot kept fans entertained. In fact, it kept fans hooked to the point they missed a NSFW poster hiding in the movie. As you can see above, fans began circulating the hidden nod online after audiences noticed the localized poster. The promo is advertising a band known as "Neikd Star", and it only gets worse from there.

After all, the poster features a crude symbol of sex using the gender signs for males and females. The in-anime promo also says the concert will be a "shocking night, f-cking night." Honestly, there is no good reason a poster this vulgar made it into Digimon Adventure 02 given its demographic. But alas, it made the cut.

If you have never seen Digimon Adventure 02: The Revenge of Diaboromon, you can see this poster yourself by picking up a copy of the movie. Physical editions of the 2001 film are available on Amazon. As for Digimon Adventure 02, the anime is gearing up for a rerelease in the United States. So for those wanting more details on the show, you can read its official synopsis below:

"Four years after Tai, Mimi and the rest of the Digidestined brought peace to the digital world and found their way back home, the Digimon Emperor - a new villain - threatens the world and its Digital Monsters. With some the original kids off to junior high, a new generation is chosen to defend and save the world from evil. Davis, Yolei, Cody, and Ken join T.K and Kari to form the new Digidestined team. Together they journey back to the Digital World to battle the Digimon Emperor and free all the Digital Monsters from his control."

What do you think about this Digimon detail? Did you ever notice this poster in the background? Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on Twitter and Instagram. You can also hit me up @MeganPetersCB to share your take!

One Piece: Gear 5 Luffy's Debut Features the Anime's Best Animation of All-Time https://comicbook.com/anime/news/one-piece-anime-1071-gear-5-animation/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 15:15:00 +0000 Megan Peters 5cf002fd-8fc1-4ff6-b6d3-3581b02b3fc9

The day has come, One Piece fans. It feels like we have been waiting ages for Luffy to unpack his next gear form, and the Straw Hat pirate has done so at last. This weekend marked the premiere of One Piece episode 1071, and it gave Gear 5 Luffy a proper introduction to the world. And as we all hoped, the episode took Luffy to the next level this weekend with some of the anime's best animation to date.

As you can see below, the animation for One Piece episode 1071 is impressive to say the least. A number of key animators were brought in to oversee Luffy's new form, and they did not come to play. Luffy pulled all the stops for his comeback against Kaido, and some of his Gear 5 scenes are too good for words.

In particular, One Piece popped off with a scene penned by Weilin Zhang and Vincent Chansard. The combo shows Luffy in his Gear 5 form as he takes on Kaido in his full dragon form. Filled with laughter, Luffy is seen turning the field around him to rubber as he manages to shoot back a dragon blast at Kaido. From start to finish, this Zhang-Chansard tribute is perfect. It also marks the former animator's first foray into the One Piece world, so Zhang did not hold back with his debut.

It goes without saying that One Piece episode 1071 is good, and the anime fandom is geeking out. As soon as the release went live late last night, anime streaming services such as Crunchyroll struggled to keep up with demand. Most of these technical issues have been resolved, so One Piece episode 1071 is now available to stream. You can check out the anime's stunning new animation and tell us whether Gear 5 Luffy is living up to expectations.

Want to know more about One Piece? No worries! You can read up on the anime's official synopsis below: "As a child, Monkey D.

James Gunn Confirms How Many Episodes DC's Creature Commandos Will Be https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/james-gunn-confirms-episodes-dc-creature-commandos/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 03:55:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 019619f5-7c1e-4609-81f3-71b4aa69b458

DC Studios is getting ready to reboot the DC Extended Universe as newly appointed co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran develop their new DC Universe with DC Studios Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, and they've already revealed the first few projects that we can expect. Among those projects, it was revealed that Creature Commandos and Waller would start off the new DCU, but Gunn has since confirmed that next month's Blue Beetle will be in the same universe. Not much else has been revealed about Creature Commandos besides the casting announcement and some minor things Gunn has said on social media, but now the co-CEO is confirming the animated series' episode count.

James Gunn Confirms Creature Commandos Episode Count

Gunn was asked on the social media platform if he knew how long Superman: Legacy would be or how many episodes Creature Commandos could be, and he responded. The DC Studios co-CEO confirmed that voice recording for Creature Commandos has wrapped.

You can check out Gunn's post he said on Threads here.

Creature Commandos Star On the Upcoming Series

Sean Gunn will be returning to his Weasel role from The Suicide Squad in Creature Commandos, as well as pulling double duty as he will also voice the character known as GI Robot. While speaking with ComicBook.com, Gunn revealed some new information on Creature Commandos.

"That's the crazy thing about animation, is that a lot of times you don't really get to see your colleagues very much because you're mostly recording separately," Sean previously said. "I can't say much other than we do get to learn a little more about The Weasel, which is pretty interesting. You mentioned GI Robot, who is a character that's very near and dear to my heart. I grew to love him in the course of working on the character."

What will Creature Commandos be about?

Not much is known about Creature Commandos, other than it will feature a different kind of DC Studios team that will consist of some of the same monsters that you would have seen in Universal's Dark Universe. According to one of the DC Studios boss', Creature Commandos would have been too expensive to make in live action. "And in terms of animation, sometimes it's a fun way to introduce characters or introduce stories that would frankly be too expensive to be done in live-action," Safran told members of the press gathered at a DC Studios event in January.

"Creature Commandos is based on the great team from DC," Gunn previously explained. "What we're doing with the DCU is, we are having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies, and games all intertwine within the same universe. We're going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this as well as in other things, some of which we've already cast. I've written all seven episodes of the show, and it's in production. So that's the first thing, and I love it.

Creature Commandos will feature a cast that includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Zo? Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Doctor Phosphorus, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Indira Varma as the Bride of Frankenstein, and Sean Gunn in a dual role as GI Robot and Weasel.

Creature Commandos is set to be revealed at an unspecified date next year. Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more details on Creature Commandos and the future of the DC Universe as we learn them.

Good Omens Writer Neil Gaiman Attributes Bad Subtiles To WGA Strike https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/good-omens-writer-neil-gaiman-attributes-bad-subtiles-to-wga-strike/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 00:57:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 8b62e60f-8ddc-4652-a3a4-69890656029c

In May, the Writers Guild of America officially went on strike after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for better pay and residuals failed. In July, the actor's guild SAG-AFTRA followed suit. Many famous folks have been seen on the picket lines since the strikes began, and some have been sharing their opinions about the current state of Hollywood. Writer Neil Gaiman has been fielding questions about the strike online in addition to talking about the second season of Good Omens, which was recently released on Prime Video. Turns out, the subtitles for the series have an unusual amount of errors. Many fans have taken to social media to call out the major mistakes, which prompted a response from Gaiman.

"This probably happened because I'm on strike," Gaiman wrote in a Tumblr post. "On S1 I checked the closed captions that the BBC made and I checked the scripts that went out to foreign countries to be dubbed or subbed. For S2, Amazon did that stuff directly, and I was on strike and unable to do a final check and correct it."

Gaiman continued, "Having said that, whoever does the captions is meant to refer to the scripts, so I don't understand why they were so off. I feel guilty, because it shouldn't have happened: it's not fair on the hard of hearing or anyone relying on the closed captions for aid. Nobody relying on the closed captions knows about Mrs Sandwich's hatpin, for example, or knows that Shax brought Crowley's mail to the bookshop, or that the first Doctor Who Annual was cover-dated 1966. I very much hope it will be corrected soon."

Will Good Omens Get a Season 3?

The first season of Good Omens was based on the book of the same name by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, and while the book never got a sequel, Gaiman wrote the show's new season. Recently, Gaiman teased that the second season is actually a bridge between the first book and his original sequel idea. The new season also ends on a cliffhanger for Crowley and Aziraphale, which means fans are already eager for news about a Season 3. Recently, Gaiman took to Twitter to reveal how fans can help make another season possible.

"It's planned and plotted and if there wasn't a Writers Strike on I'd be writing it right now," Gaiman replied to a fan who asked if there's hope for another season. "Ways to help make Good Omens Season 3 happen are A) watch Season 2, B) get people who know nothing of Good Omens to start watching S1, and C) encourage the studios to negotiate with WGA."

Good Omens is now streaming on Prime Video.

Futurama Teases "Crypto Country" in Episode 3 Sneak Peek Clip https://comicbook.com/anime/news/futurama-season-11-episode-3-crypto-country-clip/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 23:54:00 +0000 Nick Valdez b7e278d9-3fa3-4390-8422-1b679c4b79b6

The new Futurama season has been a major hit with fans so far for its comeback on Hulu, and a new sneak peek clip from Episode 3 of Futurama Season 11 teases the show's take on cryptocurrency with the introduction of "Crypto Country." Futurama's newest season has only just gotten started with its run on Hulu, and fans have already shown their appreciation for the fact that the series seemingly has not lost a step despite it being ten years since it ended its second run on Comedy Central. It's made each new episode all the more curious than ever as a result.

The first two episodes had been spent not only filling in some gaps left from the older seasons, but taking shots at current issues such as streaming show reboots. Now it seems like Futurama is going to share its take on the cryptocurrency boom as the sneak peek clip for Futurama Season 11 Episode 3 teases that the Planet Express crew will be heading to "Crypto Country" to mine all of the bitcoin (which is a physical thing in the year 3023, apparently). Check out the sneak peek at Futurama Season 11 Episode 3 below:

Where to Watch Futurama Season 11 Episode 3

Futurama Season 11 Episode 3 is titled "How the West Was 1010001," and Hulu teases the episode as such, "Bender and the crew head west to join the bitcoin mining rush." Futurama Season 11 is now streaming on a weekly basis with Hulu, and will be ten episodes long. The series has been revived for two seasons overall with original co-creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen returning as executive producers together with the also returning Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz. As for what's coming this season overall, Hulu teases Futurama Season 11 as such:

"After a brief ten-year hiatus, Futurama has crawled triumphantly from the cryogenic tube, its full original cast and satirical spirit intact. The ten all-new episodes of season eleven have something for everyone. New viewers will be able to pick up the series from here, while long-time fans will recognize payoffs to decades-long mysteries - including developments in the epic love story of Fry and Leela, the mysterious contents of Nibbler's litter box, the secret history of evil Robot Santa, and the whereabouts of Kif and Amy's tadpoles. Meanwhile there's a whole new pandemic in town as the crew explores the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture, and streaming TV."

Yellowstone Star Offers Update on Final Series Episodes https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/yellowstone-luke-grimes-offers-update-on-final-series-episodes/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 23:25:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 52f162ce-77ee-49b4-89cb-8290151a9e58

Yellowstone is set to make its broadcast debut next month when CBS begins airing the popular Paramount Network series starting with Season 1 on Sunday, September 17th, but for fans hoping for news on when the rest of Season 5 will arrive, series star Luke Grimes has a disappointing update. According to the Kayce Dutton actor, work hasn't even begun on those remaining episodes, due in part to the ongoing strikes.

"We have not [started filming the second half of Season 5] because of the writers' strike," Grimes told People (via Fox News). "I think we would be if it weren't for that, but that takes precedence over everything. They got to get that all sorted, and then we'll be getting after it."

Kelly Reilly is Hopeful About the Final Episodes of Yellowstone

While it's unclear when work on Yellowstone will continue, series star Kelly Reilly is hopeful that the final episodes of the fan-favorite series will be beautiful and epic, even if the Beth Dutton actor isn't optimistic about a happy ending overall.

"The main theme of protecting and sustaining this way of life in this land is the bottom of everything. So, I don't know which way it's going to go but we're in Season 5, and who knows what's in store," Reilly said. "Though it will probably be beautiful and epic, I'm not sure it will be happy."

"With Kayce, he has a hard time choosing his relationship with his father versus his relationship with his wife and son. I think it's because it all really matters and it matters to all of the characters."

Loki Season 2's Budget Reportedly Higher Than Several MCU Movies https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-budget-higher-mcu-movies/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 22:57:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 8894d0ec-b8a1-4ae2-ae86-c784bfee55a4

Marvel Studios has begun promoting their next big release with the release of their highly anticipated trailer for the second season of Loki. From everything we've seen in the new trailer, Loki Season 2 will definitely be another pivotal installment of The Multiverse Saga, and we'll even have our next run-in with another variant of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). Loki Season 2 looks like another quality production from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it seems that it may have a gigantic budget, that's bigger than a bunch of MCU movies, behind it.

Loki Season 2 Budget Higher Than Several MCU Movies

According to Forbes, Disney has revealed that they have spent $143 million on the budget for Loki season 2. Which would put it above several MCU movies like Doctor Strange, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy, but it also has a marginally smaller budget than their latest series, Secret Invasion. It was recently reported that Secret Invasion's budget ballooned up to $212 million, which is unforeseen for a MCU streaming series.

What is Loki Season 2 About?

Here's Marvel Studios' official logline for Loki Season 2: "Loki Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15, and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous Multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes, and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose."

Who will appear in Loki Season 2?

Loki season 2 stars Tom Hiddleston as the God of Mischief, Owen Wilson as Agent Mobius, Sophia di Martino as Sylvie, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Judge Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15, Ke Huy Quan as a TVA Tech Agent and Jonathan Majors as a variant of Kang the Conqueror. Eugene Cordero, Rafael Casal, Tara Strong, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr and Neil Ellice also star. Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead (Moon Knight) serve as executive producers this time around and also direct episodes in the second season of Loki. Eric Martin (Rick and Morty) will serve as head writer, replacing Michael Waldron with the latter taking just an executive producer role this time around,

Loki Season 2 will begin exclusively streaming on Disney+ on October 6th. Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more updates on Loki and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we learn it!

What do you think about Loki Season 2's reported budget? Are you excited to see the series when it finally premieres on the streaming service later this year? Let us know in the comments below or by hitting up our writer @NateBrail on Twitter!

Ms. Marvel Episodes Premiere on ABC Tonight https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/watch-ms-marvel-abc-episodes-disney-plus-iman-vellani/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 21:46:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 3a306215-4f6f-4b65-894a-9ea888c4a8dd

Ms. Marvel's ready for a big night on broadcast TV as the Disney+ series premieres on ABC. On the network, fans can catch the first 3 episodes of the Marvel TV show at 8pm ET. This will be interesting as next Saturday, August 12 will feature the final three episodes of Ms. Marvel at 8pm as well. Other Disney+ exclusives have hit ABC in the past, but this time feels a bit different. Back in February, Star Wars fans might have been treated to The Mandalorian on the regular old airwaves. But, Mando didn't have The Marvels premiering in theaters just a few months later.

Another motivation here from Disney is that there are multiple strikes going on that have ground Hollywood development to a standstill. The studios met with the WGA yesterday, and writers have reported that talks were not productive at all. With ABC and other linear networks looking for content, could the MCU TV shows end up being one of the programing quirks of this era. (The writers would theoretically be eligible for some increased residuals from the network TV scheduling.) For Disney, this also introduces Kamala Khan to a wider audience. Iman Vellani's performance is one of the standouts from Phase 4 of the MCU.

Ms. Marvel Is Ready For Her Big-Screen Debut

With The Marvels on the horizon for the fall, a lot more people are going to be introduced to Iman Vellani's masked hero. The movie links directly to Ms. Marvel, so the seeds have already been sown. ABC viewers get a taste of the Marvel hero superman before her big moment on the silver screen. MCU head man Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly that Vellani basically steals The Marvels and that will be fun for any fan of the franchise.

"Kamala Khan, for instance, is a great new character in the pantheon. I'm very proud of the Ms. Marvel show," Feige told the outlet. "I also know -- and this is a spoiler -- she essentially steals The Marvels, which is coming out [July 28]. It makes me excited that people will, I hope, see that movie and then go back and revisit those shows on Disney+."

Ms. Marvel's Family Is Already An MCU Favorite

the-marvels-iman-vellani-khan-family.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Entertainment)

One of the things that critics and fans alike loved about Ms. Marvel was the Khan family. Our heroine's supporting cast really shined brightly on Disney+. They'll be appearing in The Marvels as well because of their daughter's recruitment. Entertainment Weekly talked to Zenobia Shroff about the impact of seeing a South Asian family depicted with such warmth on a show of this scale.

"So many parents have written to me to say, 'Thank you. Thank you for showing how I am with my kids. My kids just love it,'" Shroff explained. "That's the whole point. That's why we made it, so that brown kids all over the world can say, 'You know what? It's okay to dream.'"

"It's a relationship like any other. There's not just the superpower angle. There's also the angle of raising a teenager, and I think that's shown very realistically -- like, can I go out? Can I do this? And [Muneeba] is saying no. I should mention that Kamala is my 14th South Asian child," Shroff chuckled. "I have played 14 South Asian mothers before this. I'm the go-to, like, 'We need a South Asian mother. Call Zenobia!' So my job was really to bring it and layer it, so people watching don't say, 'Zenobia's doing the same old shtick.'

What's Waiting In The Marvels?

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 First Look Reveals Voyager-A, Returning Fan-Favorite Voyager Character https://comicbook.com/startrek/news/star-trek-prodigy-season-2-first-look-voyager-a-the-doctor/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 21:46:00 +0000 Jamie Lovett 4ebebea1-e672-4fd4-852e-c90ec0bbc6c4

Star Trek: Prodigy is still looking for a new home, and the show's creators just gave Star Trek: Voyager fans one more reason to keep the #SaveStarTrekProdigy campaign going. Showrunners/co-creators Dan and Kevin Hageman and producer Aaron J. Waltke are attending STLV: The 57-Year Mission, this year's edition of the annual gathering of Star Trek fans in Las Vegas, and participated in a Q&A session with fans. The trio of Prodigy creatives brought something special with them: a clip from Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 that brings back Robert Picardo as the voice of the Doctor and sees the USS Voyager-A take flight.

The first look at Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 is now available on Star Trek's official website. The clip sees the young crew of the USS Protostar reuniting as Starfleet Academy cadets. They're picked up by a shuttle with the Doctor aboard, who introduces himself as a good friend of Admiral Janeway. En route to their destination, the Doctor informs the cadets that they're joining a mission to observe the wormhole created by the Protostar's destruction. They'll become part of the crew of the USS Voyager-A, a newly commissioned ship bearing the name of the vessel that journeyed through the Delta Quadrant for seven years. Admiral Janeway will personally take command of the mission since so many Starfleet personnel are busy with the Romulan evacuation (as addressed in 2009's Star Trek movie and Star Trek: Picard's first season).

Will Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 happen?

Seeing this clip will excite Star Trek: Prodigy fans, but there's no guarantee that Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 will ever see release. Still, the producers said they are 99% confident that Prodigy will find a new home. In the meantime, they say the support from fans online has helped.

Star Trek: Prodigy follows the young crew of the USS Protostar, which the characters discovered on the prison colony of Tars Lamora, deep in the Delta Quadrant. Though aimed at kids, Star Trek: Prodigy drew in longtime Star Trek fans by bringing Kate Mulgrew back to voice Kathryn Janeway in both Hologram Janeway and Admiral Janeway forms

Star Trek: Prodigy's voice cast also included Brett Gray (Dal R'El), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner) and Jimmi Simpson (Drednok). The recurring voice cast includes Daveed Diggs (Commander Tysess), Jameela Jamil (Ensign Asencia), Jason Alexander (Doctor Noum), Robert Beltran (Captain Chakotay), and Billy Campbell (Thadiun Okona).

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 is no longer streaming on Paramount+ but is available on Blu-ray and DVD. Volume One includes the show's first 10 episodes. Volume Two covers Season 1's final 10 episodes.

Yellowstone Star Kelly Reilly Says She Doesn't Always Agree With Taylor Sheridan https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/yellowstone-star-kelly-reilly-doesnt-always-agree-taylor-sheridan-beth-dutton/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 21:16:00 +0000 Nicole Drum bacb1bf0-5f82-44db-bb00-84a694581d64

Beth Dutton is one of the most popular characters on Paramount Network's Yellowstone, but it turns out that even Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth, doesn't always agree with series co-creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan's vision for the Dutton family wildcard. In a featurette included on the Blu-ray and DVD release of Yellowstone Season 5 Part 1, Reilly reveals that she has her own hopes and thoughts for Beth -- and she sometimes wishes for other things for Beth than what Sheridan gives the character.

"I'm coming to it almost the same as the audience," Reilly said (via Yahoo!) "I mean, I have my hopes and thoughts for the character.

Reilly Is Hopeful About the Final Episode of Yellowstone

Reilly also expressed high hopes for the final episode of the fan-favorite series, commenting that she feels like the final episodes may not be happy, but they will be beautiful and epic.

"The main theme of protecting and sustaining this way of life in this land is the bottom of everything. So, I don't know which way it's going to go but we're in Season 5, and who knows what's in store," Reilly said. "Though it will probably be beautiful and epic, I'm not sure it will be happy."

Nancy Drew Series Finale Synopsis Released by The CW https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/nancy-drew-series-finale-synopsis-released-by-the-cw/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 20:31:00 +0000 Nicole Drum 0aabff99-6ece-4ffd-bffe-efb1fc207ef5

After four seasons, Nancy Drew's final mystery has arrived. The CW has released the synopsis for "The Light Between Lives", the series finale for Nancy Drew. The episode is set to air on Wednesday, August 23rd at 8/7c ahead of the series finale for Riverdale. The episode will bring everything to its conclusion, including something that will make the final determination in terms of Nancy's fate with love, Ace. You can check the episode synopsis out for yourself below.

"SERIES FINALE - Nancy and the Drew Crew's mission to save Horseshoe Bay from sins of its past comes to an epic conclusion as they must contend with Nancy's most shocking discovery yet, one that will determine the fate of her star-crossed love with Ace. Amanda Row directed the episode written by Noga Landau & Melinda Hsu Taylor and Lauren Glover."

Nancy Drew's Fourth Season Is Its Last

Last fall, The CW announced that Season 4 of Nancy Drew would mark the end of the fan-favorite series. The show's cancellation came in the wake of major changes at The CW as media company Nexstar took ownership. The network has since gone on to announce numerous other programming changes, including the cancellations of Kung Fu, The Winchesters, and Walker Independence.

"We are so honored and proud to have brought Nancy Drew's iconic determination, individuality and resilience to life in a years-long collaboration with incredible creative talents in front of the camera, behind the scenes and among our studio and network partners," showrunners Noga Landau and Melinda Hsu said in a statement when the cancellation news was announced. "Our hearts are full of gratitude, knowing that we are able to bring this chapter to a close with intentionality, inclusivity and kindness -- and of course with plenty of sleuthing twists, supernatural scares and star-crossed romance along the way. We are especially indebted to our wonderful fan community, whose connection with our themes and stories has meant the world to us. Season four will be a worthy and resonant payoff for their continued love and support."

What Is Season 4 of Nancy Drew About?

Nancy Drew follows the legendary teen detective as she solves mysteries-both earthbound and supernatural-in her haunted hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine. Nancy (Kennedy McMann) leads a sleuthing team of close-knit friends: George Fan (Leah Lewis), whose desire for justice has brought her fighting spirit to the courtroom as an aspiring law school student, a path she must forge despite her disadvantaged background; Ned "Nick" Nickerson (Tunji Kasim), whose broken engagement with George has left him single, back on the dating scene, and focused on becoming a rising star as a local businessman; Bess Marvin (Maddison Jaizani), who is eager to become the town's guardian of dangerous supernatural secrets, only to encounter a threatening new foe who's hellbent on leading a witch-hunt to undermine Bess's mission; and Nancy's star-crossed love Ace (Alex Saxon), who must confront the deathly curse keeping him and Nancy from acting on their feelings for each other.

Season four of Nancy Drew begins as Nancy launches a new investigation to find a group of missing bodies from Horseshoe Bay's cemetery that have been dug up and stolen-or have possibly risen. As Nancy is drawn into this ghostly case, a string of unexplained paranormal crimes leads the Drew Crew to believe that the literal sins of the town's past have returned to haunt the living. Meanwhile, Nancy struggles with yearning for Ace, the man she loves. But when a slow-burning attraction begins between Nancy and the son of Ryan Hudson's newest enemy, Nancy must decide whether this love interest is worth the ire of both her father and Ace-whose own heart may also be tempted by a new relationship. Nancy's exploits this season will bring the Drew Crew numerous standalone cases, stunning twists, humor, and unexpected romances as they are drawn into a season-long mystery unlike any they have had to solve before. When Nancy's efforts to protect her seaside hometown from the sins of its past backfire, she must do the unthinkable to save her friends from both the supernatural and earthbound threats coming for them-and it could cost her everything, and everyone, she's ever loved.

Nancy Drew airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW. The series finale airs August 23rd.

Heartstopper Creator Addresses Kit Connor's Personal Similarities to Nick https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/heartstopper-kit-connor-nick-creator-addresses-coming-out/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 17:10:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 51c923d7-1975-4cf1-bb96-e2bc81834212

Heartstopper star Kit Connor's personal story is very similar to his character Nick. Series creator Alice Oseman says that the likeness is very coincidental. The scribe talked to EW about Season 2 of the Netflix mega-hit that's streaming on the platform now. Heartstopper's second season features Nick feeling pressure to come out. Connor actually had some similar pressure from fans and social media after Season 1. Seeing as how the books existed a long time ago, this wasn't a case of art being influenced by life. Instead, Oseman argues it's a common thing that some queer youth would feel in the same situation.

"It was pure coincidence, because Nick's story existed in the comics long before I wrote it again for the show. But Heartstopper is about balancing the light with the dark, and I think that becomes particularly clear in season 2," Oseman said.

"We've still got these joyful, beautiful Heartstopper moments, but all the characters are dealing with their own issues, as well," she added. "For Nick, that is feeling like he can't quite come out or he doesn't know when to do it, how to do it, who to do it to. It's a really relatable experience I think a lot of people go through, particularly young queer people."

Heartstopper Crushing It On Rotten Tomatoes

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, fans and critics are making their presence felt. Heartstopper posted an amazing 97% freshness rating after debuting earlier this week. When the show hit Netflix, the fandom grew like wildfire. People really just loved the story of Charlie and Nick. Now, with a whole different season to sink their teeth into, they're supporting the show even more.

"It's a beautiful thing and really one of the great surprises of the reactions to the show, and it's really a very nice surprise that anyone watches it," Kit Connor explained to TVInsider when asked about Heartstopper's success. "It's been really lovely to see the reaction from some of the slightly older fans of the show because there's something really beautiful in that reaction -- it's a real sense of joy and pride that young queer people are able to live that kind of life."

Heartstopper's Creator Reflects On Fan Support

As Netflix continues to promote the show, Heartstopper fans are doing everything in their power to promote it themselves. All the speculation around Season 2 has been humorous for Oseman. She and Patrick Walters spoke to TUDUM about how they approach the fandom for this show and the book series. At the end of the day, Heartstopper presents a nice break from the horrors of modern life for a lot of folks.

"I hope that it just makes people smile and brightens their day -- but I also hope that it inspires, particularly, young queer people to believe that they can find happiness and find romance and find friendship," Oseman explained

"We put so much love into the making of Heartstopper so to reassemble the team for two more seasons is a dream come true," executive producer Patrick Walters chimed-in. "I'm forever grateful to Alice Oseman for entrusting us with this beautiful, unique story that at its core seeks to uplift the next generation of young LGBTQ+ people. Stay tuned!"

Making Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' musical episode

ComicBook.com had the chance to speak to Dermott Downs, who directed "Subspace Rhapsody." He told us what went into making Star Trek's first musical episode.

"I would say the biggest challenge was Nurse Chapel's in the mess hall, because of this sheer, full-blown choreography that that entailed," Downs said. "She gets the whole mess hall to join her, and the only person not dancing is Spock, who's kind of watching everything he's hoped or dreamed might happen with him with her go down the tubes. She's got to fall into the arms. She's got to be crowd surfed. She's got to move through dancers that she interacts with, and yet it starts with her telling him, 'This is how it is,' and then it moves into it. There were so many elements and interactive elements to that, that that probably had the most full-blown rehearsals, just so everybody would be prepared on the day and you're not trusting someone's going to catch you, and on the day they don't."

The second season will stream on Paramount+ in South Korea, with a premiere date still to be announced.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 1 is also streaming on Paramount+. It is also available as home media on Blu-ray, DVD, and 4k UHD.

WGA, AMPTP's New Meeting Reportedly Stalls Over Two Key Issues https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/wga-amptp-new-meeting-stall-key-issues/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 01:32:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson b44dc02c-8ce5-4158-b4fe-f1d41750714f

The latest meeting between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has reportedly stalled due to multiple issues. On Friday, a report from Variety revealed that the meeting was held that afternoon in the AMPTP's Sherman Oaks headquarters, and involved WGA chief negotiator Ellen Stutzman and WGA West general counsel Tony Segall. This was the first meeting between the two groups since the strike first began on May 1st. According to the reporting, the biggest issues to remain after the meeting concern episodic television, particularly minimum staffing levels and a guaranteed minimum number of weeks of employement. The AMPTP reportedly still views the WGA's proposals on those topics "non-starters."

The reporting also reveals that the SAG-AFTRA actors' strike, which began last July, is further complicating the negotiations. Reportedly, Stutzman and Segall told the AMPTP that even if a deal is closed with the WGA, the writers will not start work until both strikes are resolved. That being said, sources cited in the report say that both sides expect to continue communicating in the next few days, after communicating with their respective groups.

Why Are the WGA Striking?

The WGA have cited a slew of reasons for the strike, which began on May 1st and has had a domino effect on how the larger industry operates, shutting down countless film and television productions months before the SAG-AFTRA strike led to the stoppage of many others. The union hopes to see improvements in residuals from media streamed online, as well as additional benefits and safeguards against artificial intelligence potentially being used to write stories instead of real writers.

Ahsoka: Rosario Dawson Says Live-Action Version of Character Was Inspired by Gandalf https://comicbook.com/starwars/news/ahsoka-rosario-dawson-says-live-action-version-of-character-was-inspired-by-gandalf/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 00:53:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 42241581-d625-4fb1-9030-d4419af02cb5

Ahsoka Tano was first introduced in Star Wars: Clone Wars and became a staple in Star Wars Rebels before joining the world of live-action in Star Wars: The Mandalorian. Fans of the franchise have seen many stages of Ahsoka's life and they're about to see her in her very own show, Star Wars: Ahsoka, which is heading to Disney+ later this month. The character was originally voiced by Ashley Eckstein and is now played by Rosario Dawson, who recently talked about portraying the older version of the character. In fact, she recently compared Ahsoka's newest chapter to Gandlaf from The Lord of the Rings.

"In the animation, you saw her go to the white, but what I loved is the idea that there was even another level to her," Dawson explained to Entertainment Weekly. "Dave [FIloni] and I talked a lot about Gandalf the Gray and Gandalf the White - talking about that transition and how she's someone very capable and excellent and looked up to as a leader, but she still has levels of development to go."

Will Ahsoka Be In Dave Filoni's Star Wars Movie?

Recently, it was announced that Ahsoka showrunner Dave Filoni will be directing his own Star Wars film, and many are assuming it will serve as the climax to The Mandalorian in addition to Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Bett. Before the SAG strike, ComicBook.com had the chance to chat with Rosario Dawson while she was promoting her new film, Haunted Mansion, and we asked if she knew anything about Filoni's film and whether or not she will be in it.

Hit Netflix Series Returns With 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/hit-netflix-series-heartstopper-season-2-returns-rotten-tomatoes-score/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 23:58:00 +0000 Jenna Anderson dacacb58-69ef-4101-8208-aa19d8963f79

One of Netflix's most beloved teen dramas has returned with great fanfare. Upon its debut on Friday, Season 2 of Netflix's Heartstopper held a perfect 100% rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. At the time of this writing, that percentage has since dropped down to 97%, but the series remains Certified Fresh on the platform either way. As the site's Critics Consensus puts it: "Beautifully acted and scripted, Heartstopper's second season is fit to bursting with emotional truth."

"It's a beautiful thing and really one of the great surprises of the reactions to the show, and it's really a very nice surprise that anyone watches it," series star Kit Connor recently told TVInsider of the series' success. "It's been really lovely to see the reaction from some of the slightly older fans of the show because there's something really beautiful in that reaction -- it's a real sense of joy and pride that young queer people are able to live that kind of life."

What Is Heartstopper Season 2 About?

In Heartstopper Season 2, Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges and Tao and Elle work out if they can ever be more than just friends. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.

The ensemble cast of Heartstopper includes Kit Connor, Joe Locke, William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Rhea Norwood, Jenny Walser, Sebastian Croft, Cormac Hyde-Corrin, Fisayo Akinade, Chetna Pandya, Stephen Fry, and Olivia Colman.

What Is Heartstopper Based On?

Heartstopper is inspired by the graphic novel series of the same name from Alice Oseman, who also created the Netflix series. Thus far, Heartstopper has spanned five volumes, and has been praised by fans for its positive LGBTQ+ representation.

"You know, what I always think to myself when I watch Heartstopper, is I wish I had this when I was growing up, because I didn't," Finney explained to Teen Vogue in a previous interview. "I didn't have anything to look up to, I didn't have anyone to look up to. And for a very long time, I felt helpless. And I felt unheard and invisible. And Heartstopper has just completely flipped that and I wish I had Heartstopper when I was growing up."

Will Heartstopper Get a Season 3?

In a recent interview, Locke teased that Heartstopper could continue far beyond Season 2, if there was enough story potential.

"Who knows--we might get four, five, six, seven seasons until Nick and Charlie have children," Locke suggested in a recent interview with W Magazine.

What do you think of Heartstopper's Rotten Tomatoes score? Have you checked out Season 2 yet? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Season 2 of Heartstopper is now available to stream exclusively on Netflix.

Good Omens: Michael Sheen Comments on "Heartbreaking" Season 2 Ending https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/good-omens-michael-sheen-comments-on-heartbreaking-season-2-cliffhanger-kiss-ending/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 22:08:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 1add520e-636c-4956-8cc2-68fec86bebec

The second season of Good Omens is now streaming on Prime Video, and it ends on a pretty big cliffhanger. Good Omens author and series writer Neil Gaiman has explained that the second season is actually a bridge between the book and his original sequel idea, but he has also stated the show needs fans' help for it to get renewed. Warning: Spoilers Ahead! Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) is offered the chance to run things in heaven with Crowley (David Tennant) by his side, but Crowley doesn't want to become an angel again. The two are at a standstill as Crowley pleads with Aziraphale to run away with him and leave the politics of heaven and hell behind. The two share a long-awaited kiss before parting ways. Before the SAG strike, Sheen spoke with IGN about the season's "heartbreaking" ending.

"We always knew where they were going to get to at the end of this particular part of the story," Sheen explained. "And I think retrospectively thinking about that, it made it a more, I think, interesting and exciting journey to be able to seed in things all the way along that would mean that endpoint that they get to be as difficult and as satisfying and as challenging and heartbreaking and all the rest of the things that you would want it to be."
