Marvel https://comicbook.com/marvel/feed/rss/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 00:55:35 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Marvel RSS Generator Workaholics Star Adam Devine Says Marvel Ruined Comedy https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-ruined-comedy-adam-devine-workaholics-says/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 00:00:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt c8752153-607c-42d9-991a-09bed96e962b

If you're wondering why it's increasingly rare to see comedies in theaters, Adam Devine says he has a good idea as to what happened. According to the Workaholics star, Marvel is to blame for dwindling comedies, suggesting the Disney-owned studio has produced movies so large, movie-goers have not only become accustomed to seeing blockbusters rather than small-scale fare, but would rather choose to do so.

"You watch comedies nowadays and you're like, this is not a fucking comedy," Devine said on a recent episode of Theo Von's This Past Weekend. "Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There's still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy...it's hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it. I feel like superhero movies ruined comedies because you go to the theater and you expect to watch something that cost $200 million to make, and comedy movies aren't that. So you're like, 'Why would I spend the same amount of money to go watch a little comedy in the theater if I can spend that and watch something that is worth $200 million?' And they still make those movies kind of funny, like, 'Oh my god, is that raccoon talking? This is hilarious!' Which it is, but it's not a real comedy"

The comedian added, "Every studio used to put out several comedies a year and there were like 45 comedies in the theater per year. So every week or so there's a new comedy in the theaters. Now, last year, there was like 6 or 7. It's crazy."

Now Devine finds himself amongst the likes of Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola as prominent filmmakers that have a bone to pick with the House of Ideas. After all, it was Scorsese who kicked the latest movement off nearly four years ago after he said he didn't feel Marvel movies were "cinema."

"I don't see them. I tried, you know? But that's not cinema," Scorsese told Empire at the time. "Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being."

Thor Star Natalie Portman Reportedly Separated From Husband After 11 Years of Marriage https://comicbook.com/irl/news/natalie-portman-separates-husband-benjamin-millepied-affair-divorce/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 20:43:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 0e0b76d5-80b9-4fd2-85e8-df3b2a4f9a05

Natalie Portman (42) has reportedly separated from her husband, French dancer/choreographer Benjamin Millepied (46), after eleven years of marriage. News of Portman's separation is coming just a month after the Thor star and her husband were making scandalous headlines for reports of Millepied having an alleged affair with climate activist Camille ?tienne (25). Portman was recently spotted and photographed on her 11th wedding anniversary without her ring on her finger; she and Millepied have two children together, a son Aleph (12), and daughter Amalia (6).

"After news of his affair came out, they've been trying to work on their marriage but are currently on the outs," a source allegedly told US Magazine.

When rumors of Millepied's affair first broke, a source told the following to US:

"Natalie believes Benjamin's affair was a brief and stupid liaison that means nothing to him," the source said, adding that Natalie was "willing to see if she's capable of rebuilding her trust," so that their children don't "grow up in a broken home."

A second source said that "Right now, they are talking and working on it together for the sake of their children."

Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied first met on the set of Darren Aronofsky's film Black Swan in 2009, in which they both starred. Portman won an Oscar for her performance as Nina Sayers, a mentally-troubled ballet dancer who lands a lead role in Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, in the New York City Ballet Company. Millepied played the Prince Siegfried character in the performance, creating an odd mirror to the real-life romance that eventually unfolded between Portman and Millepied. The two were married in 2012. s

"I met my husband on it [Black Swan], so I think I was in, like, dreamland," Portman said of the movie during a SiriusXM interview back in 2018. "He was teaching me to dance. You know, one of those romantic [stories] ... It was definitely exciting and fun. It was beautiful. I don't know about instant. It was like I really got to know him and that was when it seemed like, 'Oh this is the person.'"

Millepied raised eyebrows back in Spring of this year when he responded to a question about collaborating with his wife by saying "We're like two artists with different ambitions and interests." Although Millepied did acknowledge he and Portman were always aware of what the other was working on, and even had a possible collab project coming up, the comment still held an odd undertone that felt validated when rumors of the affair started swirling weeks later. Millepied released a feature-film re-imagining of Carmen starring Melissa Barrera (Scream) and Paul Mescal (The Lost Daughter), and Elsa Patakay (Fast Five) last year; it received mixed reviews, got little exposure, and took in just $565K at the box office.

McDonald's Teases Being Part of Loki Season 2 https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/loki-season-2-mcdonalds-promo-marvel-studios/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 17:48:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw b7f772ce-eea1-4f92-bf7e-bc118108b534

McDonald's is loving the fact that its brand is making a big featured appearance in Marvel's Loki Season 2. If you haven't (been the one person who hasn't) seen the Loki Season 2 trailer, there is a sequence in it that has really caught on with fans: Loki (Tom Hiddleston) visits a reality where his cohort variant Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) is working in a vintage-style McDonald's restaurant.

The Loki Season 2 McDonald's connection has been teased since filming began on the second season, as fans wondered what could possibly bring the Gods of Mischief to the golden arch.

Well, McDonald's wouldn't give away even a single spoiler to help explain what's going on with Loki Season 2 - but their cryptic teaser certainly got a lot of attention (over 213K reached, and counting...). The teaser features a variety of different TV programs from sitcoms (Seinfeld, The Office) to anime (The Devil Is a Part-Timer!), to classic films (Coming to America, The Fifth Element) which each make mention of McDonald's or some parody of it.

More importantly: The McDonald's ad promises some kind of big surprise opening coming on August 14th - but the opening of what, we do not know. Loki Season 2 won't premiere on Disney+ on October 6th; presumably, McDonald's has some kind of tie-in promotion with the show: could we see a McDonald's meal inspired by Loki?

Right now, Marvel Studios needs whatever creative marketing solutions they can find to promote their new TV shows and movies. The ongoing Writers' and Actors' Strike has shut down pretty much any of the traditional PR/marketing strategies that studios use to promote their works. Cast members cannot do any premieres, talk shows (which are not even running right now anyway), or other promotional events, making it hard to drum up awareness of new film or TV show's arrival. Sponsors like McDonald's may be the go-to avenue for studios' promotional needs in the near future, which will be interesting to measure. If promotional campaigns double as successful marketing campaigns, then actors could see at least one aspect of their job being lost for good.

Loki Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

Loki Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on October 6th.

Watch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's First 10 Minutes https://comicbook.com/movies/news/watch-stream-spider-man-across-the-spider-verse-first-10-minutes-online-gwen-stacy/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 16:45:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 618ac267-14dc-4848-956a-e906156481e0

Let's do this one more time. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse isn't streaming digitally until tomorrow -- but you can watch the first 10 minutes right now. In the clip, which surfaced online over at IGN, Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) recaps her tragic beginnings and the origin story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore). It's been 16 months since the Spider-Woman of Earth-65 saw the Spider-Man of Earth-1610, one of her few close friends from across the multiverse. It's been even longer since the death of her universe's Peter Parker (Jack Quaid), who died after an experimental serum transformed him into the Lizard.

"I never really made another friend after that," Gwen says in the 10-minute clip, which you can watch below. "Except one. But he's not here. And there's no way to get there."

Wanted for Peter Parker's murder, it's police captain George Stacy (Shea Whigham) -- Gwen's father -- pursuing the masked menace Spider-Woman. After thwarting a multiversal Vulture (Jorma Taccone) at New York City's Guggenheim Museum, she meets Miguel O'Hara (Oscar Isaac): the Blue Panther Spider-Man 2099. The high-tech Spider-Man of the future is from another dimension and serves as part of the Spider-Society, an elite squad of Spider-People from across the Spider-Verse that includes Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman (Issa Rae); Ben Reilly, a.k.a. Scarlet Spider (Andy Samberg); LEGO Spider-Man (Nic Noviki); Pavitr Prabhakar (Karan Soni), a.k.a. Spider-Man India; and the Spider-Punk Hobie Brown (Daniel Kaluuya).

"I think the cool thing is Gwen serves as a mirror to Miles' possibility; she's a guard against keeping things so open with your family," co-director Joaquim Dos Santos previously told ComicBook. "Even in the first film, she was fully capable. She's even more so in this one. She has a moment with Miles where she thinks, 'Can you hang?' And Miles can hang now. And she's like, 'Dude, you're growing up. You're changing.' So it's fun to have a character that can provide a little bit of, 'Hey, what does the next year of my life look like?'"

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is available to own digitally starting August 8th and on Blu-ray September 5th. A sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is in development but is currently undated after Sony Pictures removed the threequel from its 2024 release schedule.

Marvel is teasing that Iron Man's latest armor upgrade will come with an X-Men twist!

Previews for upcoming collections of Marvel Comics books include the current storyline for Invincible Iron Man, in which Tony Stark has gotten close with The White Queen (Emma Frost), just as the X-Men's mutant nation of Krakoa was obliterated by the anti-mutant organization Orchis, and nearly every mutant was banished from the Earth. Well, Tony Stark and The Avengers are aiding the X-Men in their darkest hour, and it looks like Iron Man will get a new version of his armor, made from the new mutant metal known as Mysterium!

Here are the teaser synopses for Invincible Iron Man vol. 2 and vol. 3:

What Is Marvel's Mysterium?

marvel-mysterium-x-men.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Comics)

When the X-Men established their mutant nation of Krakoa, S.W.O.R.D. became a mutant astronautics and orbital defense program, run by Abigail Brand. Brand organized "The Six," a group of mutant teleporters and power boosters/converters who were capable of reaching the very end of creation in order to retrieve an artifact that only exists there: Mysterium.

Since its discovery and retrieval, Mysterium has proven to be a major game-changer Marvel metal. It's as durable as Adamantium (in its "secondary" form); it's one of the most efficient conductors of electricity ever seen, while also being radiation-proof.

One of the most distinct things about Mysterium is that it is more resonant with magic than other Marvel metals. Mysterium can instantly break or negate even the most powerful Marvel magic spells - including possession. Its profound effects on magic have shaken up the Marvel magical community, as many sorcerers/supernatural beings (Clea, Selene) are learning how vulnerable it makes them.

Mysterium is currently viewed as the most valuable material in the galaxy, due to the near-impossibility of obtaining it, its profound powers, and its technological potential.

With an Iron Man armor made of Mysterium, Tony Stark is about to get an upgrade that makes him ready to face all the threats of the Marvel/X-Men Universe: from Orchis and rival industrialist Feilong to all the mystical threats lurking in the wings.

Invincible Iron Man is on sale at Marvel Comics.

X-Men: Marvel Introduces the Female Magneto and Her Sisterhood of Evil Mutants https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-magneto-issue-1-irae-sisterhood-of-evil-mutants-x-men/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 03:50:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo d8deb786-f705-4f65-bd26-b93cf2183560

In 1985, the milestone Uncanny X-Men #200 established a new status quo for Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Chris Claremont's classic "Trial of Magneto" saw the master of magnetism stand before the International Court of Justice and face charges of crimes against humanity for his super-villainy -- Magneto's attempts to protect homo superior from extermination by becoming humankind's would-be conqueror. Xavier, suffering from a failing heart that could be treated only by the Shi'ar Empire's advanced alien technology, left Earth with Empress Lilandra and entrusted Magneto with a great responsibility: carry on in Xavier's place as headmaster and teach the New Mutants.

"His last wish was that I take his place -- and try my best to fulfill his dream of a world wherein human and mutant may live together in peace," the reformed Magneto told Xavier's students in The New Mutants #35. As he sought redemption, Magneto led the New Mutants -- Cannonball, Cypher, Karma, Magik, Magma, Mirage, Sunspot, Wolfsbane, and Warlock -- and fought alongside the X-Men as an ally.

Marvel Comics revisits '80s era X-Men in August's Magneto Vol. 4 #1, set during Magneto's tenure as headmaster to the New Mutants. Written by J.M. DeMatteis with art by Todd Nauck, "Evil Mutant Chapter One: Things Past" finds the reformed supervillain reflecting on his path as a mutant terrorist-turned-teacher of the next generation of X-Men. He recalls the attack on the Cape Citadel missile base (in 1963's X-Men #1) and how he revealed Magneto to the world as "the total manifestation of humanity's mutant nightmares," forcing Xavier's X-Men out of the shadows.

But as he reckons with the past and the ghosts of the Auschwitz death camps where Max Eisenhardt's family was murdered, Magneto finds the X-Mansion invaded and the New Mutants beaten unconscious. Their attacker is a woman, aged 18 or 19, who wields flame the way Magneto manipulates metal. "Oh, Magneto -- I have dreamed of this encounter for years -- ever since we first met," she tells her victim, who does not recognize her. "I was beneath your notice then! But I assure you that this encounter is one you'll never forget."

marvel-magneto-irae.png
(Photo: Marvel Comics)

With that, her flames siphon negative feelings -- ugliness, brutality, rage -- literally tearing a "dark tsunami" from Magneto's soul. The woman gleefully absorbs "a lifetime of anger" that he worked to repress -- only to use it as a weapon, unleashing it on Magneto and rendering him unconscious. "Max Eisenhardt. Erik Lehnsherr. Magnus. Michael Xavier. The names you've hidden behind! The roles you've played! It's no wonder you're confused about your identity! Your purpose! But there's only one name that reflects the fiery reality -- of who you truly are."

Magneto awakes on the island-nation of Santo Marco to find Irae, Queen of Wrath, and her Sisterhood of Evil Mutants kneeling and hailing Lord Magneto.

"Magneto may be the single most complex character in the Marvel Universe: a man of dizzying contradictions who has endured, and caused, extraordinary suffering. Who's been both villain and hero. Whose long, tangled history invites endless exploration," DeMatteis told Marvel.com. "Our new Magneto series allows us to look at all aspects of Erik Lehnsherr's soul and psyche--at a period when he was trying to put his life as a so-called 'evil' mutant behind him and step, somewhat reluctantly, into Charles Xavier's shoes, attempting to guide a new generation of mutants. We also get to look back at the early days of the X-Men--one of my favorite periods in Marvel history--and introduce a new villain, born in the cauldron of Magneto's dark past."

Marvel's Magneto #1, the first of a four-issue limited series, is out now.

Marvel's Simu Liu Opens Up About "Rough Spot" During Acting Career While on Picket Line https://comicbook.com/movies/news/shang-chi-simu-liu-tough-spot-career-sag-aftra-strike/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 04:56:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt dc1b5494-9bae-4d5b-ab72-8ce7d826d371

Simu Liu is one of Marvel's newest stars, and he's been surprisingly candid about his career before landing the role of a lifetime. Now that SAG-AFTRA is on strike, Liu is reminiscing about his time prior to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. According to Liu, it wasn't too long ago he was part of SAG-AFTRA's sizable working-class corps, wondering when and where his next paycheck would come from.

"I've been there. I've spent time as a background actor and I've spent time in that type of gig economy where it's just gig to gig not knowing when your next paycheck is going to come and not qualifying for health care," Liu told Deadline from the picket line this week. "It's already a rough spot to be in as is, but what the AMPTP is suggesting is that the livelihood of these working-class actor is lowered even more with new guidelines about AI and new guidelines about replication. In my mind, I remember not just myself but all of the background actors and performers that I knew whose livelihood depended on their ability to go into work. It really hasn't been that long for me so to be in a position of privilege now, I think it's a responsibility to stand in solidarity with each and every one of the members of SAG."

Liu's AI comments are referencing the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers' desire to pay background actors a single day's wage in return for the ability to use their likeness without further payment or approval in perpetuity.

"This 'groundbreaking' AI proposal that they gave us yesterday: they propose that our background performers should be able to be scanned, get paid for one day's pay, and their company should own that scan their image, their likeness and should be able to use it for the rest of eternity in any project they want with no consent and no compensation," SAG-AFTRA executive Duncan Crabtree-Ireland revealed earlier this year. "So if you think that's a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again."

Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is now available on Disney+, all major digital platforms, and wherever physical movies are sold. Shang-Chi 2 doesn't have a release window yet.

Captain America 4: Anthony Mackie Says MCU Sequel Brought "Marvel Experience Full Circle" https://comicbook.com/movies/news/captain-america-4-anthony-mackie-says-film-sam-wilson-full-circle/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 02:48:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 629b1b13-54d1-4963-b8a1-1e94186f7d7b

Although Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) has left the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Captain America franchise lives on thanks to Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson. Wilson now dons the mantle of Captain America and is rumored to be facing off against the legendary Cap villains in the Serpent Society when Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters next year. Even though the plot of the film is still being kept under lock and key, Mackie says his work on the film has brought his time in the MCU full circle.

"It kind of brought my Marvel experience full circle because we shot in D.C. at the same hotel that we shot 'Winter Soldier' at," Mackie told TheWrap in a pre-WGA strike interview. "One of my first Marvel scenes was me sitting at a table talking to the senator and me and Chris [Evans] and Scarlett [ Johansson] kidnapping him and we go back and we stay at the same hotel and we shot at that same area. So in that regard, it was really emotional to think how far my character has come and where he is now after the 10 years that I've been in the MCU."

Given Marvel Studios frequently uses the same cast and crew from one project to the next, Mackie added that working on Marvel projects is similar to going to summer camp and catching up with everyone.

"These Marvel movies have kind of turned into summer camp. You go to set and there's people that you've known for 10, 12 years now that you've worked with and got to know and people have kids and people get divorced and people buy homes," the actor added. "So it's like going back to see your old friends. So it was really easy. At no point in time did I feel like it was a different experience from any of the other Marvel movies I've done. It was just a great experience, you can only go down from here."

Who's all in Captain America 4?

In addition to Anthony Mackie returning as the eponymous Avenger in Captain America: Brave New World, other returning actors include Liv Tyler (Betty Ross), Tim Blake Nelson (The Leader), Carl Lumbly (Isaiah Bradley), and Danny Ramirez (Joaquin Torres). Shira Haas is making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the iconic Marvel comics character Sabra in the film while Harrison Ford is playing Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross in the place of the late William Hurt. Captain America: Brave New World is being directed by Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox).

"The first day was so intimidating," Mackie recently revealed to Inverse about working with Ford. "I was so f*cking nervous I couldn't remember my lines. He's Harrison f*cking Ford. There is this aura about him. But he dispels that really quickly because he's such a cool guy. He's everything a movie star should be. He would say, 'Let's shoot this piece of sh*t.' And everybody was like, 'Yeah, let's shoot this sh*t.'" Mackie can't go into specifics about his scenes with Ford, but he notes that there are plenty of them. "We spent a good bit of time together. Ross and Cap have always had that relationship, where they were friends and they respected each other, but they always bumped heads. That's their relationship in the storyline."

Captain America: Brave New World is currently scheduled to hit theaters on August 26, 2024.

Loki Season 2's Budget Reportedly Higher Than Several MCU Movies https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/loki-season-budget-higher-mcu-movies/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 22:57:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 8894d0ec-b8a1-4ae2-ae86-c784bfee55a4

Marvel Studios has begun promoting their next big release with the release of their highly anticipated trailer for the second season of Loki. From everything we've seen in the new trailer, Loki Season 2 will definitely be another pivotal installment of The Multiverse Saga, and we'll even have our next run-in with another variant of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). Loki Season 2 looks like another quality production from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it seems that it may have a gigantic budget, that's bigger than a bunch of MCU movies, behind it.

Loki Season 2 Budget Higher Than Several MCU Movies

According to Forbes, Disney has revealed that they have spent $143 million on the budget for Loki season 2. Which would put it above several MCU movies like Doctor Strange, Thor: The Dark World, and Guardians of the Galaxy, but it also has a marginally smaller budget than their latest series, Secret Invasion. It was recently reported that Secret Invasion's budget ballooned up to $212 million, which is unforeseen for a MCU streaming series.

Ms. Marvel Episodes Premiere on ABC Tonight https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/watch-ms-marvel-abc-episodes-disney-plus-iman-vellani/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 21:46:00 +0000 Aaron Perine 3a306215-4f6f-4b65-894a-9ea888c4a8dd

Ms. Marvel's ready for a big night on broadcast TV as the Disney+ series premieres on ABC. On the network, fans can catch the first 3 episodes of the Marvel TV show at 8pm ET. This will be interesting as next Saturday, August 12 will feature the final three episodes of Ms. Marvel at 8pm as well. Other Disney+ exclusives have hit ABC in the past, but this time feels a bit different. Back in February, Star Wars fans might have been treated to The Mandalorian on the regular old airwaves. But, Mando didn't have The Marvels premiering in theaters just a few months later.

Another motivation here from Disney is that there are multiple strikes going on that have ground Hollywood development to a standstill. The studios met with the WGA yesterday, and writers have reported that talks were not productive at all. With ABC and other linear networks looking for content, could the MCU TV shows end up being one of the programing quirks of this era. (The writers would theoretically be eligible for some increased residuals from the network TV scheduling.) For Disney, this also introduces Kamala Khan to a wider audience. Iman Vellani's performance is one of the standouts from Phase 4 of the MCU.

Ms. Marvel Is Ready For Her Big-Screen Debut

With The Marvels on the horizon for the fall, a lot more people are going to be introduced to Iman Vellani's masked hero. The movie links directly to Ms. Marvel, so the seeds have already been sown. ABC viewers get a taste of the Marvel hero superman before her big moment on the silver screen. MCU head man Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly that Vellani basically steals The Marvels and that will be fun for any fan of the franchise.

"Kamala Khan, for instance, is a great new character in the pantheon. I'm very proud of the Ms. Marvel show," Feige told the outlet. "I also know -- and this is a spoiler -- she essentially steals The Marvels, which is coming out [July 28]. It makes me excited that people will, I hope, see that movie and then go back and revisit those shows on Disney+."

Ms. Marvel's Family Is Already An MCU Favorite

One of the things that critics and fans alike loved about Ms. Marvel was the Khan family. Our heroine's supporting cast really shined brightly on Disney+. They'll be appearing in The Marvels as well because of their daughter's recruitment. Entertainment Weekly talked to Zenobia Shroff about the impact of seeing a South Asian family depicted with such warmth on a show of this scale.

"So many parents have written to me to say, 'Thank you. Thank you for showing how I am with my kids. My kids just love it,'" Shroff explained. "That's the whole point. That's why we made it, so that brown kids all over the world can say, 'You know what? It's okay to dream.'"

"It's a relationship like any other. There's not just the superpower angle. There's also the angle of raising a teenager, and I think that's shown very realistically -- like, can I go out? Can I do this? And [Muneeba] is saying no. I should mention that Kamala is my 14th South Asian child," Shroff chuckled. "I have played 14 South Asian mothers before this. I'm the go-to, like, 'We need a South Asian mother. Call Zenobia!' So my job was really to bring it and layer it, so people watching don't say, 'Zenobia's doing the same old shtick.'

What's Waiting In The Marvels?

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as "The Marvels."

Iron Man's Leslie Bibb Reflects on Marvel Role 15 Years Later https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/iron-mans-leslie-bibb-reflects-on-marvel-role-15-years-later/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 18:59:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak a41485a9-6f6e-4727-bf4f-7755e49c13a3

This May marked 15 years since Iron Man first hit theaters, which means many stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been reflecting on their time in the franchise. The first Iron Man film featured characters who would go on to become franchise staples, including some that are still being used today. The movie also featured Leslie Bibb as Christine Everhart, the Vanity Fair journalist who ends up hooking up with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Bibb also reprised the role in Iron Man 2, which also starred her real-life partner, Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer. Bibb was also featured in several Marvel shorts in 2015 and 2016, which saw Everhart reporting on the Avengers as an anchor for WHIH World News. Bibb even voiced her character in two episodes of What If...? in 2021. Recently, Bibb caught up with Collider and reflected on making Iron Man 15 years later...

"I was doing this movie called Midnight Meat Train with Bradley Cooper. My manager sent me this audition, and he said, 'There's this thing, it's a Marvel movie,' and I was like, 'Marvel? What's Marvel?' And they said, 'Go in.' I'd worked like all night, I was really tired, and I was like, 'I can't do this audition,'" Bibb recalled. "It's like he knew, I remember he was like, 'Leslie, put on a skirt and go in. Just do it.' I was like, 'I'm gonna be terrible!' And he's like, 'Just do it!'"

She continued, "So I went, and I think, I don't know ... was [Jon] Favreau in the room? He might have been in the room. I don't know. I just remember I auditioned, and did it, walked out, got it. [I] had to go read the script in somebody's trailer on the set. I remember I was sneaking notes, writing stuff, because I was like, 'I'm never gonna see the script again.' I'm like, 'I need to have an idea of what the heck is happening.' I'd never signed an NDA about reading a script before. I was like, 'That's weird.'"

Bibb also recalled going to a comic book store to find some Iron Man comics, and she couldn't believe how seriously people were taking the recent comic death of Captain America. "I don't think I understood the obsession with comic books. It hadn't occurred to me. It was not in my realm of thinking. And the movie came out, and it was huge and sort of changed everything," she explained.

"I don't really feel like a part of the Marvel world because there's so many superheroes," Bibb added. "I think there are people who are like, 'You're the person who got him to say he was Iron Man!' But, you know, it's not like you're Black Widow, or you're wearing a cape. I'm so grateful to be in that world. I loved it when they asked me to come do the What If...?'s. I just think it's so crazy how big that world is, and how they're constantly... those guys and girls and women who are all at that studio, how they're so smart at branding all of it and creating content that is so digestible for so many fans. That's always fascinating to me how rabid the fans are for that content. I think it's so interesting."

Kevin Feige Reflects on Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man Casting:

Recently, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige spoke about Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man casting. In honor of the 15th anniversary of the movie's release, Feige sat down with Iron Man director Jon Favreau to reflect on the first MCU movie and talk about everything from the effects to the casting of Downey Jr. in the titular role.

"I think that's probably one of the greatest decisions in the history of Hollywood," Feige shared. "I remember on later movies...I would say, Robert, we wouldn't be in this mess if it wasn't for you. Meaning we wouldn't have a studio if it wasn't for you."

"I remember sitting down with [Robert] and I was like, he just got it and he's got that spark in him and his eye and he's ready," Favreau recalled. "Once it was him, that's when my life got a lot easier." He added that Downey Jr. "had a very [high] standard that he wanted to hit with, not wanting this to feel basic. He wanted it to be special."

"It wasn't really until we cast Robert that I fully understood what the take was," Favreau revealed. "Every decision became a lot easier." Feige said of Favreau and Downey Jr., "You and Robert are that movie, it's the balance right between poking fun at it or taking the piss out of a moment, but also, and this is what you both are so good at, taking it seriously."

Iron Man is currently streaming on Disney+.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Creators Share New Animation Techniques https://comicbook.com/movies/news/spider-man-spider-verse-2-animation-techniques-creators-share/ Sat, 05 Aug 2023 14:25:00 +0000 Aaron Perine dc969307-ffc9-41c8-85fa-eeab87e688f5

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's creators are sharing new footage of their animation process. A video showcasing these wild techniques was posted by Sony . They call it "Beyond The Screen" and it features directors Justin K. Thompson, Kemp Powers, and Joaquim Dos Santos talking about their experience. Joining the filmmakers are VFX supervisors Pav Grochola and Michael Lasker. Development supervisor Bret St. Clair and Lead assistant editor Erika Scopelli are also brought in for their expertise. Check out the video below for all the wild behnd-the-scenes details.

Sony describes the video, "Go Beyond the Screen with the creators of "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" to see how they used new tools to build the film's visually stunning (and ever-changing) worlds. From mimicking brush strokes and creating characters' distinct looks, to making and learning from mistakes, they worked collaboratively to bring the hit movie to life."

Spider-Verse Is Ready To Leave it All Out There In Part 3

(Photo: Sony Pictures Animation)

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is on the horizon, and the creative team is ready to leave it all out there. Co-director Joaquim Dos Santos told Collider that fans should be ready for just about anything when it comes to the Spider-Verse sequel. With the sky truly being the limit, it feels like Miles' story could end up going in any number of directions. Fans should also keep an eye out for anything from the first two movies to make a reappearance in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse as well.

"I mean, you saw it in the film, there was cool stuff to be seen. I think everything's on the table," Dos Santos told the outlet. "I can't give you an answer. I wouldn't dare give you an answer for fear of being, like, sniped right here on the spot, but yeah, I mean, that's the exciting thing of these films. Look, I'm a man of a certain age, and in my mid-forties, the idea that I would be seeing a film like this, so beyond what I could imagine, even when I was a kid, it's the stuff that I would draw in school on my notebook paper, and now it's happening. So I think everything's up."

The Emotional Core of Spider-Verse

(Photo: Marvel Entertainment)

Miles Morales is an undoubted fan-favorite after the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The second movie only serves to underline that point as the voracious fan response would tell you. ComicBook.com's Aaron Perine spoke to the directors about the Multiverse-level stakes of these films and how they balance against the family element with the Morales household. For the team, Miles' family matters more than any sacred timeline.

"I mean, look, that's, we've all been on that journey too," Thompson said when asked about Miles' parents. "I've been at the end of the line where I'm like, I don't know what the next step is for me. I will say animation saved my life. I was at a point in my life where I was like, I don't know what's going to happen next. I don't know. And it was animation that sort of came in and swept me off my feet and provided for me. So I think that relatability again is something we can impose on Miles and wonder what is he going to do? What's the thing that's going to save Miles?"

Daredevil Returns to His Most Controversial Costume in New Marvel Series https://comicbook.com/comics/news/daredevil-black-armor-costume-new-marvel-series-dg-chichester/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 20:50:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo 1d3cc257-4386-453e-a45e-2c5915bfdeb1

In 1993's Daredevil #321, the horn-headed hero of Hell's Kitchen donned a red-and-black armor in battle against his demonic doppelganger: Hellspawn. The six-part "Fall From Grace" storyline by writer D.G. Chichester and artist Scott McDaniels only spanned Daredevil #319-#325, but the character wouldn't return to his traditional red costume until 1995's Daredevil #345. As revealed during San Diego Comic-Con in July, Matt Murdock is back in black -- and back in the '90s -- in Daredevil: Black Armor. Launching November 22nd, the four-issue limited series is set during Chichester's original run on the title between 1991 and 1998.

Marvel Comics on Friday revealed the Daredevil: Black Armor #1 cover by Spider-Man artist Mark Bagley and a variant by PlayStation's God of War art director Rafael Grassetti (below). The throwback run teams Chichester with penciler Netho Diaz (Thunderbolts, Legion of X) and inker JP Mayer (Spider-Man 2099: Exodus, Sabretooth).

ddblkarmor2023001-cov.jpg

"If someone told me earlier that I'd have another chance to put on Daredevil's horns (let alone horns attached to a suit of black armor) I'd have thought they'd taken one too many whacks to the head with a billy club. But apparently my passport to Hell's Kitchen still works just fine!" Chichester told Marvel.com. "It's an unexpected (but welcome!) thrill to visit Matt Murdock's neighborhood again, and to work with Marvel on going back in time to discover a new adventure for the man without fear.

"The Daredevil office has been incredibly encouraging in taking some wild swings with this series," Chichester continued. "Returning to Matt and Daredevil and that costume where I left them -- as the writer I am now -- has been an amazing experience. It's knowing how to jump off a rooftop -- but accepting the challenge that you don't always know where you're going to land. I hope fans of my 'Fall From Grace' and 'Fall of the Kingpin' stories find more to enjoy in my take on hyper senses and heightened action -- especially seen in an entirely new way thanks to the dynamite art and visual storytelling of Netho Diaz and JP Mayer."

The official description: "When civilians, heroes, and villains alike are disappearing into the dark depths of Hell's Kitchen underground, Matt Murdock will need to push his extraordinary senses and his armored suit beyond their limits to find out who's responsible. Throughout the saga, Daredevil will be pitted against a who's who of Marvel's deadliest villains including Hobgoblin, Sabretooth and more--all building towards an explosive confrontation with the mysterious evil that's pulling all the strings! Matt's armor will have to work overtime as the series delivers nonstop intense action and brutal fighting in extreme 90s' fashion!"

WWE's Seth Rollins Breaks Silence on Captain America 4 Role (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/wwe/news/wwe-seth-rollins-captain-america-4-role-interview/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 19:56:00 +0000 Aaron Perine f26a67b4-a2c5-4382-aadd-431e6f336b0c

WWE star Seth Rollins has broken his silence about that mysterious role in Captain America: Brave New World. ComicBook.com was there for a WWE x C4 meet and greet event that saw the Superstar chat about the MCU before SummerSlam. As soon as set photos began to circulate, people wanted to know more about what part Rollins would play in the Captain America sequel. While he couldn't give us the entire story, the fan-favorite did mention that it was a great experience. Rollins would also allude to the playful rivalry with his wife Becky Lynch.

"I am sworn to secrecy. Pretty tight lipped on anything related to this project," Rollins mused. "Obviously the photographs have made their way online, nothing to be done about that, but it was a very good experience for me. I'm looking forward to seeing what the reaction is from everybody else who gets to get eyes on the project.

"There's always a healthy competitiveness in our marriage, we're both top tier stars, top tier competitors. It's very difficult for us to not be competitive," he added." She got to headline WrestleMania before I did, and I got to do this before her, so yeah, we're always duking it out."

Will There Be More Films After Captain America 4?

(Photo: WWE)

Other WWE Superstars have found their way over to Hollywood. Examples like Hulk Hogan, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, John Cena, and Batista are all over the place now. With Captain America: Brave New World on deck, could we see Rollins make a similar leap? According to one of his conversations with The Daily Mail, you can never truly count it out.

"As for me, I don't know where my future lies. I feel, like I said, at this moment wrestling is my future for as long as I can do it at a high level. But there's going to come a day when falling down is going to turn my bones to dust and I will have to start looking elsewhere and seeing what other options there are," the WWE Superstar admitted. "I don't think that's coming any time soon and I'm just in the prime of my career right now and there's a lot of years ahead of me."

How Is Captain America 4 Different From Other MCU Movies

Captain America: Brave New World will be a bit different than a lot of the cosmic stories that have been going in the MCU lately. The film's production designer, Ramsey Avery, spoke to Collider about the grounded feel of this one. (It sounds like the kind of project where a wrestler would not be that out of place.)

"[T]he intent of this is to be very grounded, to make sure it has that sense of really happening in the world," Avery said to the outlet. "So it's a different sense in a lot of ways than particularly some of the more recent pieces have been. And it's a very deliberate choice, and it's a fascinating choice and an exciting choice. And it comes with a whole host of different kinds of questions involved in that."

Who do you think Rollins is playing in Captain America 4? Let us know down in the comments!

Will there ever be an Iron Man 4?

Given Marvel Studios has largely told the stories it set out to tell with the original Avengers, it's unlikely Downey's Iron Man will return in any major manner. As recently as 2019, Iron Man helmer Jon Favreau confirmed he, Downey, or Marvel haven't conversed about a fourth film in the franchise.

"We haven't talked about four," Favreau said of himself and Downey. "I've talked to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] about it to see what they're up to, but we definitely love working together and we love these characters. We talk about what it would be, and we always joke about the freak storyline which is the Happy Hogan storyline when he turns into a Hulk-like character. We joke about that. No plans, as of yet."

"I mean, nowadays who knows with all the different platforms and the streaming service," he added. "I'm part of the new Disney streaming service. All of these new technologies are, new platforms are emerging and all sorts of really cool... It's not like network television or not like blockbuster films where everybody has to be, everything has to be made for all audiences. Now you could make specific material and content for specific groups."

Avengers: Secret Wars is currently set to be released on May 7, 2027 while the three Iron Man films are streaming now on Disney+.

Event Comics Can't Save Comic Book Movies https://comicbook.com/movies/news/event-comics-cant-save-comic-book-movies/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 15:21:00 +0000 Russ Burlingame 26268ac9-cf3a-455e-be4a-a3684d90eed2

So far, 2023 has been something of an indictment of the recent trend of "event"-ifying superhero movies and TV shows. While event comics have long been a staple of the superhero genre, their success does not seem to be translating to film the same way -- and there's probably a good reason why. Since Crisis on Infinite Earths in the mid-80s, hardly a year has passed when both Marvel and DC didn't have at least one big crossover event, pulling together characters from all corners of their shared universes to face a threat bigger than any solo comic can contain.

Event comics are a huge part of the economy of "Big Two" comics -- but something that Disney and Warner Bros. are learning this year is that the comics market is very different from the live-action megabudget adaptation market in some key ways. You probably could have seen it coming with Justice League, if not for the fact that right afterwards there was Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame to prop up the crossover event model.

But fast-forward to 2023: both The Flash (an adaptation of the 2011 event Flashpoint), and Secret Invasion (which adapted the 2008 story of the same name) have failed to connect with audiences and, in both cases, they have done at least speculative damage to the universes they are a part of. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is something of an anomaly that we'll get into in a minute, but it's worth noting that the big live-action success this year in the comics space has been Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3, a movie that almost aggressively avoided ties to the Marvel's shared universe or the various multiversal shenanigans currently going on.

What did Guardians of the Galaxy have that The Flash did not? Well, characters. The world and characters of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movies are really well-defined. Fans already loved them going in, and the movie itself did not disappoint, and did not allow itself to be hijacked by digressions into the MCU multiverse. And it delivered on what it promised going in.

These are, to be blunt, things that event comics struggle with even at their best.

For those who aren't big comic book readers, "event comics" aren't just comics that tell a big story with big stakes. That can happen within the pages of any given superhero, and often does -- especially if the hero in question is sufficiently powerful that world- or universe-ending villains are de rigeur. Instead, event comics are crossover stories, usually structured in such a way that the main story of the crossover takes place in a self-titled miniseries (House of M, Invasion!, Secret Invasion, Infinite Crisis), while the events of the crossover bleed out into the main universe, often with individual comics making tie-in issues. While The Reign of the Supermen! did not have its own miniseries -- it took place over the course of several months within the pages of the four monthly Superman comics -- it did score a few tie-in issues, most notably Green Lantern #46, in which Hal Jordan returns to Earth to find Coast City destroyed.

The great thing about event comics is that they're big stories, often being told by the biggest names in comics, featuring the most popular characters. They're huge spectacles. The not-so-great thing about event comics is that they have a tendency to suck up all the oxygen in the room, hijacking the stories of individual comics and sometimes having really undesirable knock-on effects for characters who were barely considered in the original crossover.

They also take the characters away from their own supporting casts, putting them in rooms or on battlefields populated almost exclusively by other super-characters. That can ultimately have a dulling effect on all the heroes involved, making them feel less remarkable and giving them fewer really interesting ways to interact with others in the books.

Event comics go through cycles. In the '80s and '90s, they were huge. In the early 2000s, there had been some diminishing returns, and event comics started to feel less like a thrill, and more like a chore. In 2005 or so, things exploded again. Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, Civil War, and House of M showed the world that the '90s were back, and things have kept up that way since.

It's interesting to see how Hollywood adapts big event comics, especially since the comics themselves are structured so much differently from feature films. Comics are a monthly, serialized medium with a functionally unlimited "special effects budget," whereas movies are...none of those things. Marvel has made their universe into something resembling serialized stories, but if you're spending $200 million on something, it really does have to stand on its own.

One would think that the big, bombastic stories of event comics would lend themselves well to blockbuster movies. Somehow, though, it doesn't seem to work that way. The lack of any tether to a relatable world, and the way civilian characters are sidelined, ignored, or forced to "suit up" as superheroes makes everything feel kind of...same-y. When the characters' only job is to fight a big, nebulous threat, it's easy for them to start feeling like interchangeable cogs in a machine.

(We'll see whether The Marvels, which seems to have avoided this phenomenon, does better at the box office.)

These events worked well in the Arrowverse, where the need to have an episode for each character or group of characters allowed plenty of breathing room, giving moments for characterization and stakes to be more clearly laid out. Marvel Announces Capwolf & the Howling Commandos for October https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-comics-captain-america-werewolf-capwolf-howling-commandos-october-halloween-2023/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 15:05:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo e6c3ddcb-10ea-4042-87f8-fdae6f78688f

This Howl-oween, Capwolf is putting the "howl" back in the Howling Commandos. Marvel Comics on Friday announced Capwolf and the Howling Commandos, a four-issue limited series from writer Stephanie Phillips (Cosmic Ghost Rider, Rogue & Gambit) and artist Carlos Magno (Captain America: Cold War Alpha, Savage Avengers). The World War II-set story teams Sgt. Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos -- Corporal Dum Dum Dugan, Gabriel "Gabe" Jones, Robert "Rebel" Ralston, Jonathan "Junior" Juniper, Izzy Cohen, and Dino Manelli -- with Steve Rogers, the Sentinel of Liberty, who becomes the Sentinel of Lycanthropy!

"This is the kind of story I was dying to tell at Marvel, blending my love of historical fiction with the incredible history of the characters in the Marvel Universe," Phillips told AiPT. "CapWolf and the Howling Commandos may be a war story, but it also has horror, romance, and a few new characters that we introduce along the way. And just wait until you see Carlos Magno's incredible artwork on this series..."

Marvel Comics describes Capwolf and the Howling Commandos:

This four-issue limited series will tell an all-new story where Steve becomes a terrifying werewolf during an early World War II mission. Luckily, his fiercest allies are by his side -- Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos! After years of combat, this elite squad of soldiers thought they've seen it all but this might be their wildest adventure yet as the series captures the spirit of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's classic wartime storytelling with a modern mystical twist! When Captain America is transformed into a werewolf on the front lines of World War II, he'll need the help of the Howling Commandos to take down a band of Nazi cultists who intend to use supernatural forces to turn the tide of battle. But can Cap control the skeptical, jaded Commandos when he can barely control himself?

The werewolf Captain Americawas introduced by writer Mark Gruenwald and artist Rik Levins in 1992's Captain America Vol. 1 #405 (above), where Doctor Nightshade and Dredmund the Druid turned Steve Rogers into a wolf-man. Using a potion derived from Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night, the combination of Nightshade's mutagenic chemicals and the Super-Soldier Serum created Capwolf: the extra-strong wolfen form of Captain America.

The Incredible Hulk Director Reveals Scrapped Plans for MCU Sequel (Exclusive) https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/the-incredible-hulk-2-sequel-plans-grey-red-hulks-louis-leterrier/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 22:34:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 6ff57afd-c996-4e1c-b401-58282f90b4e7

The Incredible Hulk will forever be the strange odd-child of the Marvel Cinematic Universe; the fim's characters, storylines, and even its star (Ed Norton) were all left out of subsequent MCU films, with Mark Ruffalo bringing a new take on Bruce Banner/The Hulk to the first Avengers movie.

However, Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier is now explaining, there were some extensive plans in place for The Incredible Hulk 2, at one point.

"Yeah there was like a whole sequel," Leterrier told ComicBook.com's Chris Killian during interviews for his latest film, Fast X.

The filmmaker went into more detail, explaining that Incredible Hulk 2 would've seen various versions of Hulk introduced into the MCU: "There was like Grey Hulk, Red Hulks - there was a lot of good stuff that we were planning."

It's wild to hear Louis Leterrier describe Incredible Hulk 2 as having both Bruce Banner's alternate "Grey Hulk" persona and not one but seemingly multiple Red Hulks. The MCU didn't venture much deeper into Hulk lore after Incredible Hulk (2008) - not until She-Hulk debuted in 2022. Now rumors are swirling that the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World will debut Harrison Ford as Red Hulk, with Liv Tyler possibly making a return to the franchise to play Red She-Hulk. Grey Hulk seems to have been sidelined in favor of Mark Ruffalo's "Smart Hulk" evolution, much to the chagrin of some diehard Marvel Comics fans.

incredible-hulk-2-sequel-plans-grey-red-hulks-loius-leterrier.jpg

"Hulk is a complex character within the Marvel Universe," Leterrier admitted. "You want the primeval Hulk... the rage Hulk. And then when you go Grey Hulk and Smart Hulk you lose that a little bit and you get a little bit more kiddish with it."

Leterrier was careful to conclude by saying the Hulk we see now is very far away from the Hulk he was trying to build:

"But that was the fun of where I was in my movie, with the access to consciousness and all that stuff. That was really fun. And that's what I was aiming to do. But take my time with it. Because there's so many characters they want it all fast [laughs]. I like She-Hulk, but then you know, yoga between Hulk and... I was like 'Okay! yeah, we're very far from my Hulk.'"

The Incredible Hulk will be streaming on Disney+.

The Boys Star Jack Quaid Quickly Debunks Marvel's Fantastic Four Rumor https://comicbook.com/movies/news/the-boys-jack-quaid-debunks-marvel-fantastic-four-rumor/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 20:39:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 9d42b74b-dd8e-48b5-9bc0-7754f407005a

Marvel Studios has been pretty busy developing their upcoming films, and one of the next big movies that they have coming out is actually a Fantastic Four reboot. Fantastic Four will be helmed by WandaVision director Matt Shakman, and they have begun casting the film with Sue Storm/Invisible Woman as their main priority. It was previously rumored that Adam Driver, Margot Robbie, Paul Mescal, and Daveed Diggs were all in the running to play Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm, respectively, but it seems that those talks fell through. Earlier today, it was revealed that Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One) and Jack Quaid (The Boys) were going to be playing Sue Storm and Johnny Storm / Human Torch, until it was later corrected and revealed that Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) was actually going to play Johnny Storm / Human Torch. Quaid took to Twitter to debunk those rumors before they spread like wildfire and also used the attention to support the actor's strike. You can check out his tweet below.

"Hello everyone. Nope," Quaid wrote on Twitter. "Not playing Johnny Storm but hey I'm flattered. Now that you're here though, donate to the @sagaftra foundation if you can!"

Kevin Feige: The Fantastic Four Are a Big Pillar in the MCU Going Forward

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige seems to be really excited about the future of Marvel Studios productions, and he recently revealed that The Fantastic Four will be a major part of the MCU going forward.

"Well, we talked a little bit about Secret Wars. We talked about [Avengers: The] Kang Dynasty as related to [Ant-Man and the Wasp:] Quantumania. The only other one in terms of me personally and my 23-year history is the Fantastic Four," Feige recently revealed. "We sort of talked about mutants and that whole aspect to the Marvel world, but Fantastic Four is the foundation for everything that came after in the comics. There's certainly been versions of it [on screen], but never inhabiting the storytelling of the MCU. And that's something that is really exciting for us. People will start to hear more about that soon. We plan on that being a big pillar of the MCU going forward, just the way they've been in the comics for 50 or 60 years."

WandaVision's Matt Shakman is set to direct the film with no word on who will star as the titular characters. Although, there are a bunch of rumored castings floating around the web. Fantastic Four is currently expected to hit theaters in May 2, 2025. Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more updates on the Fantastic Four cast as we learn them!

James Gunn Reveals His Preferred Way to Watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in a Home https://comicbook.com/movies/news/james-gunn-reveals-preferred-way-watch-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3-home/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 19:57:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 55d9bc41-78e7-43d0-9570-de3a3df7e2cd

Marvel Studios has finally released Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on Disney+ after a very successful run in theaters, and fans have been tuning in to the film and finding new things to love about it. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Chukwudi Iwuji, who plays the High Evolutionary in the film, recently sat down with us and revealed that the film has an alternate ending where he survives, and the studio finally released it online. Gunn has been celebrating the film's home media release for the past few weeks, and now that it is on Disney+, he's revealing which version of the film he prefers to watch at home: the IMAX or the Widescreen version?

Which Version of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Does James Gunn Prefer?

"The 'widescreen' version is mixed aspect ratio and would be my preferred way to watch in your home," Gunn wrote on Threads. "Lots of directors shoot in 2.35. Those sections in Vol 3 were composed for 1.90 and 2.35 respectively, and the changes come at specific points in the storytelling, so it's my preferred way of watching the film on TV. But it's fun to watch the different versions. I liked the 3D version too!"

You can check out the entire conversation on Threads.

What was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 about?

Marvel Studios describes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as follows, "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians".

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 features a fan-favorite cast that includes Chris Pratt as Star-Lord/Peter Quill, Salda?a as Gamora, Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Klementieff as Mantis, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket and Sean Gunn (brother of director James Gunn) as Kraglin Obfonteri. New cast members include Will Poulter as Adam Warlock and Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is finally available for purchase through digital download and is still in theaters! Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more updates on the future of the MCU and James Gunn's next big project, Superman: Legacy, as we learn it!

Fantastic Four Reboot Rumored to Have Cast Vanessa Kirby and Joseph Quinn as Sue and Johnny Storm https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-fantastic-four-reboot-cast-vanessa-kirby-joseph-quinn-sue-johnny-storm/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 19:07:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw cae875ff-b547-47cd-a16a-9ff66f845945

Marvel's Fantastic Four reboot is reportedly coming down to some official casting decisions. A new episode of The Hot Mic has reported the scoops that Mission: Impossible actress Vanessa Kirby is upwards of "95%" confirmed to play Sue Storm (aka The Invisible Woman), while Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn is about 80-90% confirmed to be playing Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story reported "Jack Quaid" being cast as Johnny Storm, as per the original source reporting. That source reporting was later corrected to "Joseph Quinn" landing the role.

Jeff Sneider claims that Vanessa Kirby is the one that Marvel Studios is building the film around, having landed her first. ComicBook.com's Brandon Davis spoke to Kirby during the Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning press tour (see video above). Kirby played coy about possibly getting the Sue Storm role, only saying "It would be an honor." However, her M:I 7 co-star Pom Klementieff (Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy) was in the room, and was clearly excited about the prospect of Kirby in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And rightly so: Kirby has become an international breakout star, holding down key roles in major franchises like Mission: Impossible and The Fast Saga's Hobbs & Shaw spinoff. She also proved her dramatic acting skills during her years in the theater, as well as her harrowing Oscar-nominated performance as a grieving mother in the film Pieces of a Woman.

fantastic-four-marvel-cast-vanessa-kirby.jpg
(Photo: Karwai Tang/WireImage/Getty Images)

Joseph Quinn is an up-and-coming talent since his breakout role as Eddie Munson in Stranger Things. It would be interesting to see Quinn go from a geeky underdog role to smarmy-guy Johnny Storm - who has been portrayed in previous Fantastic Four films by the likes of Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan.

Other parts of Sneider's addressed rumors that actors Matt Smith and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are also circling Fantastic Four - while not debunking it totally, Sneider seemed skeptical about Smith, in particular. Fans have been weighing in on all this, with leading rumors being Moss-Bachrach will take on Reed Richards while Matt Smith could play Norin Radd, aka the Silver Surfer (or vice versa). Galactus being the villain of F4 has been a toss-up with Doctor Doom since the beginning, but Sneider reports that it will be Galactus, and a Latino actor will voice the planet-eating entity.

What we do know for sure, is that Matt Shakman (Marvel's WandaVision, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Game of Thrones) is directing Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four reboot, with Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer writing the script. The release date is May 2, 2025.

First unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, Hasbro has opened up pre-orders for the highly anticipated Marvel Legends wave of action figures based on the upcoming X-Men '97 animated series on Disney+. As the title suggests, the show will pick up where the iconic X-Men: The Animated Series from the '90s left off, complete with the original voice cast. Naturally, toy companies are in a tizzy over the prospect of releasing merch featuring Marvel characters in their classic costumes from the series, which is why Hasbro hit the ground running with Epic / Titan Hero Series figures and a Magneto roleplay helmet.

Of course, the X-Men '97 Marvel Legends figure wave is what fans are the most excited about, and your first chance to reserve them starts today. Details about each figure in the wave can be found below complete with pre-order links and a gallery of images.

  • MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES X-MEN '97 GAMBIT ($24.99) - Pre-order at Entertainment Earth / Amazon: Includes figure and accessories like a throwing card hand, staff, and effects pieces.
  • MARVEL LEGENDS SERIES X-MEN '97 MARVEL'S ROGUE ($24.99) - Pre-order at Entertainment Earth / Amazon: Includes figure interchangeable hands.

  • MARVEL STUDIOS' X-MEN '97 TEAM UP PACK ($44.99) - Target exclusive set to arrive this Fall. "Action figure set includes Storm, Marvel's Rogue, Cyclops, Wolverine, and Gambit with 6 coordinating mutant power clip-on accessories."

"As an animated show, the original X-Men was the forerunner to some amazing action series," Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, VP of Animation at Marvel Studios previously said. "Everyone that is making X-Men '97, top-down, is a fan. On this project, instinctually, we knew exactly what this is. To bring this series forward and pick up that baton, and not just keep running at the same pace, but to really elevate. That's the responsibility."

Confirmed cast members for X-Men '97 includes Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Chris Potter as Gambit, Catherine Disher as Jean Grey/Phoenix, and Adrian Hough (Nightcrawler). Other fan-favorite X-Men characters confirmed to appear in the series also include Cable, Bishop, Sunspot, Morph and Forge.

The official synopsis for the show reads: "Storm and Wolverine try to continue the X-Men. Magneto comes in and wants to step up for Charles Xavier. Sinister comes in to try to end the X-Men once and for all."

It was thought that X-Men '97 would begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ in fall 2023, but that date may or may not be pushed back to 2024. When a firm release date does arrive, you'll be able to find it right here.

Marvel's Cloak & Dagger Star Reveals Shocking Detail About Series' Residuals https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-cloak-dagger-star-reveals-shocking-series-pay-residuals/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 15:52:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 0d74a53e-4f22-4c0a-a708-3d832b9cca4f

Marvel's Cloak & Dagger ran for two seasons on Disney's Freeform Channel between 2018-2019, and helped establish the prototype version of a Marvel Young Adult franchise universe, alongside Hulu's Runaways. However, as the current SAG-AFTRA Strike unfolds in Hollywood we're learning more and more disturbing details about what actors are actually dealing with financially. One Cloak & Dagger star has gone so far as to say that Disney/Marvel residual check is not at all the payday some fans might think:

Rolling Stone is interviewing SAG actors on the picket line, and one person who spoke to the magazine was No?lle Ren?e Bercy, the actress who played the role of "Evita Fusilier" in Cloak & Dagger. Evita was a major supporting character in the series - a love interest for main character Tyrone Johnson/Cloak (Aubrey Joseph), whose deep New Orleans roots made her and her aunt Chantelle (Angela Davis) experienced practitioners of voodoo magic. Bercy appeared in 14 of Cloak & Dagger's 20 episodes - so again, a pretty significant role in a Marvel series - and yet, the actress revealed that her most recent residual check from Disney/Marvel was all of 14 cents.

"AI isn't the only problem. It's greed," Bercy told Rolling Stone. "Human greed is the problem."

Marvel fans can currently find Cloak & Dagger streaming on Hulu, where Disney promotes it as part of a growing block of Marvel TV/Movie content that doesn't fit the main Marvel Cinematic Universe block on Disney+. A big point in the Actors' Strike centers on Hollywood actors' sentiment that old-model deals about distribution based on media like home video/DVD/Blu-ray (literally) don't account for residuals and/or bonuses for streaming distribution on different platforms. So, while hours of content may be till be consumed by fans, the actors are getting little to nothing for it, while streaming services build subscriber bases based on the appeal of these content blocks.

Needless to say, there are a lot of fans - and a fair amount of aspiring actors - who will get a sobering reality check from the Bercy's claim. It shatters any illusion that simply landing a Marvel role will put an actor on Easy Street in terms of both money and career opportunities.

At the time of writing this, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is set to meet with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) tomorrow, marking the first big break in the standoff between the striking creatives and the studios/executives. If compromises are found, there's hope that SAG and its actors will follow soon thereafter.

Marvel Star Jonathan Majors' Trial Pushed Back a Month https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-jonathan-majors-trial-pushed-back-september/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 15:10:00 +0000 Aaron Perine f7586476-f0e8-4595-9136-0cd44f7a241a

Jonathan Majors' domestic violence trial has been delayed until September. Variety reports that the Marvel star will see another day in court on September 6. Majors walked into the trial today flanked by his new girlfriend, actress Meagan Good. Online, outlets noted that he had a notebook and a bible in his possession. His lawyer, Priya Chaudhry reportedly filed a motion to delay the trial because of prosecutors' "timeliness" in turning over evidence. All of this really ends up adding an increased microscope to the proceedings as social media conjecture kicks into overdrive.

Back in March, the Kang the Conqueror actor was arrested in Manhattan. Majors was charged with assault and aggravated harassment after an alleged domestic dispute with his girlfriend. A woman argued that she was assaulted and taken to the hospital with injuries to her head and neck. Majors has pleaded not guilty to the four charges he stands accused of. A charge of strangulation was dropped on the road to this point.

Jonathan Majors' Representation Argues His Innocence

"Jonathan Majors is completely innocent and is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows," Priya Chaudhry told the press in a previous statement. "We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently."

"All the evidence proves that Mr. Majors is entirely innocent and did not assault her whatsoever," Chaudhry added. "Unfortunately, this incident came about because this woman was having an emotional crisis, for which she was taken to a hospital yesterday. The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason Mr. Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon."

New York Authorities Describe Initial Jonathan Majors Incident

(Photo: Aaron J. Thornton/Getty Images)

Back in March, the New York Police put out a statement about what they were called out for. Majors was arrested after that incident and was later released. The star's representation argues that there could be some racial bias at play in the arrest. Here's what the authorities had to say.

"On Saturday, March 25, 2023, at approximately 1114 hours, police responded to 911 call inside of an apartment located in the vicinity of West 22nd Street and 8th Avenue, within the confines of the 10 Precinct.," the statement begins. "A preliminary investigation determined that a 33-year-old male was involved in a domestic dispute with a 30-year-old female. The victim informed police she was assaulted. Officers placed the 33-year-old male into custody without incident. The victim sustained minor injuries to her head and neck and was removed to an area hospital in stable condition."

How Agents of SHIELD Did Secret Invasion Better Than the MCU https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/agents-of-shield-made-better-secret-invasion-marvel-studios-mcu/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 04:52:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 5e6d6b82-a87b-4b79-9bb3-74ec41343400

Even though Secret Invasion had phenomenal performances from the likes of Samuel L. Jackson and Olivia Colman, the series ultimately crumbled under the weight of a lackluster plot that did no favors for either character or story. The television show was loosely based on an iconic Marvel comic series donning the same name, though the name and primary antagonists are really where the similarities ended. It's also why a single episode of ABC's Agents of SHIELD did a better take on Secret Invasion than the comic's own live-action counterpart.

The episode in question is the beloved "Self Control," the finale for the second pod of SHIELD Season Four. Over the course of the "pod," or group of episodes, an android was able to build Life-Model Decoys of most every agent within SHIELD. Think Skrulls but robotic replicas instead. As you might expect from the scenario, the plot eventually boiled to "Self Control," where the show's ensemble completely broke down due the distrust involved in determining whether their colleagues were human or LMD.

"Self Control," just 40-some minutes in length, instills viewers with a horrendous sense of dread as the main characters go as far to hold their loved ones at gun point because of the tense situation. Watching the episode five years after its initial release and the feelings remain, it's as unnerving as ever before--feelings that largely escaped Secret Invasion entirely.

With Secret Invasion, you have a group of shape-shifting aliens that invade the highest levels of society on Earth yet the show never pulls any major surprises despite having access to one of the most helpful plot devices in storytelling. Instead of directing viewers every which way, the series allowed its shape-shifters to take the appearance of one character for the duration of the show and rehash predictable plot points.

Even though Agents of SHIELD had three seasons worth of television work to build characters and relationships, Secret Invasion didn't even think about getting started on that. Instead, the spy "thriller" simply took the name of a beloved comics run in hope that'd carry a six-episode order through the finish line without any serious kind of character development or plot progression, and it's why Agents of SHIELD ended up more faithful to the comic than its own live-action namesake.

What is Secret Invasion about?

Secret Invasion centers around MCU veterans Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Mendelsohn) as they deal with an invasion of shape-shifting Skrulls who have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth. Other MCU veterans will include Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as James "Rhodey" Rhodes / War Machine, and Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross. New cast members will include Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Olivia Colman, Carmen Ejogo, Christopher McDonald, Dermot Mulroney, and Killian Scott. The series will be written and executive produced by Kyle Bradstreet, and directed by Thomas Bezucha and Ali Selim.

All episodes of both Secret Invasion and Agents of SHIELD are streaming exclusively on Disney+.

Guardians of the Galaxy: James Gunn Has Surprising Answer About Gamora After Vol. 3 https://comicbook.com/movies/news/guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3-gamora-future-james-gunn-surprising-answer-revealed/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 04:04:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt c6ce5c8c-fd92-451b-b755-d469b7bc584b

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 serves as the finale of the current iteration of the beloved cosmic misfits, serving as a send-off for many of the characters included in the franchise. That includes the second version of Zoe Saldana's Gamora, one that effectively reverted to a version before any of the development the character underwent in Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. With fans hoping a semblance of the previous Gamora could shine through in potential future projects, Guardians helmer James Gunn quickly shot that done.

"Unlikely," the filmmaker said to a fan on Threads wondering if Gamora will go more good now. "She's a Ravager."

Post by @jamesgunn
View on Threads

In chat with THR earlier this year, Saldana called her character's ending "bittersweet," saying though she may have desired a different ending for the character, the one given is what made the most sense for the story at hand.

"It was a bittersweet decision, obviously. I wanted to know that in the final chapter, Gamora stays on and finds a way to become a Guardian again. But this felt like the right way to end things for her, because of what she had been through," Salda?a said. "At the end of the day, any multiverse that she would've come from, she was still going to have the same experience with Thanos, and she was still gonna have the same guilt and the same trauma. So she finally found solace with the Ravagers, and she felt more open than she had ever been."

"I think the whole thing with Peter bothered her, because even though she had no recollection of who he was, she had a sense that it must have been special," she continued. "And I appreciated that takeaway because it kind of gave us the hope that if the Guardians seek help again from the Ravagers, maybe Gamora and Peter will find a way back into each other's lives, even if it's just as friends."

Though the film itself ends with a title card teasing that the "Legendary Star-Lord will return," no other characters have received public confirmation of a return at some point in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently available for purchase through digital download and will be on home media August 7th. Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more updates on the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and James Gunn's next big project as we learn it!

Marvel Confirms Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's Place in MCU Timeline https://comicbook.com/movies/news/marvel-confirms-guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3-place-mcu-timeline/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 03:41:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 9394e385-5c88-4e51-ae68-d8445d8eeec4

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has finally hit Disney+ after a massively successful run in theaters this summer, and fans have been tuning into all the cool new details that they can find. Marvel Studios always does one really cool thing when a Marvel Cinematic Universe project hits their streaming service: it adds those projects to the specific spot they are on the official MCU timeline. Fans have been waiting to figure out when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was set, and today the streaming service added the film to its timeline. According to the MCU timeline, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 takes place after The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania but before the recently released Secret Invasion.

You can take a look at the official MCU timeline below.

Marvel Studios recently released Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's Alternate Ending

Last month, Marvel Studios released the infamously talked about deleted scene and it shows exactly what High Collector actor Chukwudi Iwuji has been saying was in it. During a recent Previously, while appearing on ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast, Iwuji revealed to us that the sequel actually had an alternate ending than the one we saw in theaters and revealed some cool information about what goes down in the scene.

MCU Timeline
(Photo: Disney+)

"Well, let me just put it this way. I'm hoping you'll see an extended version or maybe an alternate ending, you know, that we certainly did film," Iwuji exclusively revealed to us. "I mean the whole point in Marvel is that unless you see someone die they haven't necessarily died and even if they do die what does that mean in the multiverse, right? But, the point is that Rocket doesn't shoot me. They make a point of saying why don't you kill him and he says no, I'm not going to kill him. And you don't actually see me go down with the ship. So, I'll just leave it at that."

Top 10 Comic Books Rising in Value in the Last Week Include Daredevil, Meet the Skrulls, and Spawn https://comicbook.com/comics/news/top-10-comic-books-rising-value-daredevil-meet-the-skrulls-spawn/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 03:29:00 +0000 Matt DeVoe 19cf85c9-cc0d-4d8c-8595-84e2bbcb9ee6

SDCC is behind us, but we're still seeing a few exclusives on our list in the form of Transformers, Spider-Man, and Spawn. In addition to these exclusives, we see the return of a familiar cover in the first appearance of Spider-Man 2099. The rest of our top ten are all awesome newbies! Invading our list is the first appearance from a certain Skrull in Secret Invasion. Just ahead is 90s nostalgia in the form of Biker Mice. We also have the debut of a new villain in last week's Hulk and a Dark Knight, ashcan! The latest MCU buzz has Daredevil fans in a frenzy as they rush to pick up the first appearance of a rumored Disney+ villain!

#10: MEET THE SKRULLS #1 | MARVEL | 2019 | SECRET INVASION FINALE SPOILER | If you haven't completed the critically debated Disney+ Secret Invasion series, here's fair warning that spoilers are ahead! G'iah (played by Emilia Clarke) plays a central role in the progression of the series. There was tons of buzz about what the future of this character would be and how it would play out in the series. Out of all the rumors that were floating around, none of them revolved around G'iah becoming a super Skrull. Hundreds of articles (okay, maybe tens of) discuss her power/abilities compared to other Avengers. Has G'iah become the strongest character in the MCU? Even if she isn't, her longevity in the MCU has been cemented, and fans are ready to collect her first appearance. We tracked it at a high sale of $130 for a CGC 9.8 and a raw NM FMV of $14.

#9: THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #25 - J. SCOTT CAMPBELL - 2023 SDCC - PHOTO BOOTH SECRET COVER (LIMITED 2000) | MARVEL | 2023 | What an interesting book. This issue was long advertised to be the big reveal of what happened between MJ and Peter. The story takes you through a roller coaster of emotions and is done quite well. However, most of this series issues remain at FMV, while some retailer incentives have dropped in value. Why is this particular issue so valuable and desired? J. Scott Campbell is one of the most prominent artists in the comic industry. His covers are already highly collectible, let alone being a convention exclusive with a secret reveal. Additionally, this book was limited to a sizeable 2000 copies. Once these start hitting CGC, it will be interesting to see how many 9.8s will be selling at a premium! For now, we tracked it at a high sale of $150 for an NM raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $101.

#8: SPAWN #1 - PUPPETEER LEE - 2023 SDCC | IMAGE | 2023 | Once again, Spawn makes it to the top, and-- wait, your eyes do not deceive you--this is an entirely new cover. SPAWN #1 is already one of the best-selling comic books in history, as we readily see every time we feature it on our top lists. Puppeteer Lee delivered an epic remastered cover of Spawn, and it took off at this year's SDCC. We tracked it at a high sale of $275 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw NM FMV of $95.

#7: BIKER MICE FROM MARS #1 | MARVEL | 1993 | Let's Rock n Ride! If you're a 90s kid, you likely grew up in the age of anthropomorphic heroes: Mighty Ducks, S.W.A.T. Kats, Street Sharks, Extreme Dinosaurs, and, of course, Biker Mice from Mars! The Biker Mice are making a return to the new age, thanks to none other than Ryan Reynolds. The hype is real; fans are picking up copies of this first issue to refresh their memories. We tracked it at a high sale of $300 for a CGC 9.8 copy and a current raw VF FMV of $20.

#6: THE INCREDIBLE HULK #2 - LEINIL FRANCIS YU (1:25) | MARVEL | 2023 | Here's an interesting addition to our list. THE INCREDIBLE HULK #2 was released this past week and quickly became a top-selling comic. Why? Well, this issue is a key issue with the first appearance of Sister Sadie. Sister Sadie is depicted as this zombie corpse cult leader in a remote town. Following a series of misfortunes, Sadie has her followers sacrifice Bruce on an altar. Unfortunately for her, she realizes that she has encountered a "fractured son." Bruce transforms into Hulk, and the rest is left to the next issue. The story is well-written, and the artwork is phenomenal. The debut for this villain was quite strong, enough for fans to begin collecting the retailer incentive of her first appearance. We tracked it at a high sale of $79.19 for an NM raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $52.

#5: SPIDER-MAN 2099 #1 | MARVEL | 1992 | There is no special 2023 SDCC re-release of this issue. There is no new information about Miguel or Beyond the Spider-Verse. Spider-Man 2099 is just that cool; he was cool this whole time. Although this book sometimes falls a few spaces, it always bounces back up and remains a consistent member of our top ten and runner-ups. We tracked it at a high sale of $189 for a CGC 9.8 and a current raw NM FMV of $21.

#4: TRANSFORMERS #1 - 2023 SDCC | IMAGE | 2023 | The bridge between the Transformers and G.I. Joe has been created in VOID RIVALS #1! With the Transformers now in a shared universe, the Autobots are in a good place for renewed interest in the property. The release of Transformers: Beast Wars has also sparked even more interest in the robots in disguise. What makes this issue so unique? Well, fans received a treat with the release of an exclusive SDCC cover. Within days, this book became a highly coveted collector's item. We tracked it at a high sale of $125 for a raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $85.

#3: DAREDEVIL #14 | MARVEL | 2016 | While DAREDEVIL #11 is the first appearance of The Muse, this issue is the first cover appearance of the villain. Additionally, this copy is moving at about the same FMV as the first appearance for an NM raw copy. We tracked it at a high sale of $29.99 for an NM raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $25.

#2: BATMAN: GARGOYLE OF GOTHAM #1 - ASHCAN | DC | 2023 | While this series doesn't release for another couple of months, fans of The Dark Knight can preview the story with this "one per store" ashcan. GARGOYLES OF GOTHAM will be Rafael Grampa's DC writing debut. The series is touted to explore the darkest side of Batman. According to the synopsis, Batman has chosen to kill off his alter ego and embrace being Batman full-time. This leads to a confrontation with an all-new rogues gallery of deranged villains. It looks like a wild ride is in store, and everyone is seeking a sneak peek into the storyline! We tracked it at a high sale of $90 for an NM+ raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $35.

#1: DAREDEVIL #11 - RON GARNEY | MARVEL | 2016 | Every week, we see the power of rumors and speculation on the value of books. Daredevil is not immune to these swings in the market. With the release of Daredevil: Born Again on the horizon, rumors are beginning to circulate. One of the biggest rumors was the reveal of one of the series's villains, The Muse. The Muse is a sadistic and deadly villain who uses his victims' body parts to create his deranged forms of art. This rumor, if true, confirms two things. First, the Disney+ series will remain faithful to the tone of the Netflix series (after all, The Muse is a truly demented and brutal killer). Second, the series would see Wilson Fisk running for Mayor. The Muse's second run-in with Daredevil was during the election of Wilson Fisk and during the anti-vigilantism rhetoric that Fisk was using to win over the public. Until the rumor is confirmed, fans will just have to have fun speculating on Daredevil's return! We tracked it at a high sale of $65.80 for an NM+ raw copy and a current raw NM FMV of $29.

WandaVision Actor Reveals Marvel Digitally Scanned All Background Performers, "They Won't Have Any Use For Us" https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/wandavision-marvel-studios-digitally-scanned-all-background-actors-they-wont-have-any-use-for-us/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 00:49:00 +0000 Jamie Jirak 52fb45ac-20df-48c5-8bad-11bf2f71b731

In July, the actor's guild SAG-AFTRA went on strike after negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers broke down with no deal in place. There are many reasons SAG is striking along with the Writers Guild of America, and one major topic is the use of AI. Right before the SAG strike, it was revealed that studios wanted AI background actors for their projects, which would leave film and television extras' likenesses to be used in perpetuity. This week, background actor Alexandria Rubalcaba spoke to NPR about her time working on WandaVision and revealed Marvel Studios scanned her and dozens of other extras.

"Have your hands out. Have your hands in. Look this way. Look that way. Let us see your scared face. Let us see your surprised face," Rubalcaba explained of the instructions she was given while being scanned. Rubalcaba said her face and body were scanned for about 15 minutes before a digital replica of her was created. However, Rubalcaba was not told how or if her digital avatar would be used in future projects. If Marvel does end up using Rubalcaba's digital scan, she probably won't be informed, and she won't be paid for future use of her likeness.

"What if I don't want to be on 'MarioVision,' or 'SarahVision]?" Rubalcaba explained. "I fear that AI is eventually going to weed out background actors. They won't have any use for us anymore."

Considering Agatha: Coven of Chaos is coming soon and will feature many actors from WandaVision, this is a real concern for actors such as Rubalcaba, who makes the SAG-AFTRA union rate of $187 a day working as a background actor.

SAG-AFTRA recently held a press conference in which President Fran Drescher and National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland detailed the reasons the union had chosen to strike and AMPTP's background actor proposal.

"This 'groundbreaking' AI proposal that they gave us yesterday: they propose that our background performers should be able to be scanned, get paid for one day's pay, and their company should own that scan their image, their likeness and should be able to use it for the rest of eternity in any project they want with no consent and no compensation," Crabtree-Ireland revealed. "So if you think that's a groundbreaking proposal, I suggest you think again."

Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for updates on the ongoing actors' and writers' strikes.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Adam Brody Recalls Failed Star-Lord Audition https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/marvel-guardians-galaxy-adam-brody-failed-star-lord-audition/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 22:46:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw b31b8199-bfa0-4fe3-9d9d-99ceb86354f3

Former The OC star Adam Brody is telling the story of how he auditioned for the part of Star-Lord/Peter Quill in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - and clearly did not get the part. Brody has a new movie out with his wife Leighton Meester, Taran Killam and writer/director (and friend) Ben Ketai: a remake of the 1994 Meryl Streep, Kevin Bacon and David Strathairn rafting trip thriller, River Wild. Before the Actors' Strike, Brody spoke about the twists and turns in his career since the 2000s - including his would-be brush with Marvel fame.

"I wanted that one," Brody said about Guardians of the Galaxy, before admitting that Chris Pratt was a "better fit. He is bigger, stronger, but tonally, I really dug it."

This would be the second big strikeout for Adam Brody in the superhero movie genre; the actor was part of DC and Mad Max creator George Miller's now-infamous Justuce League movie, Justice League: Mortal, in the late-2000s. Brody was set to play Barry Allen/The Flash in that DC franchise starter, which fell apart early in production - ironically due in part the 2000s WGA Strike. It sounds like he missed his shot with Marvel just a few years after that.

Ouch.

Everybody Auditioned for Star-Lord

There have been numerous stories about the race to land the role of Star-Lord in James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy. Shazam! star Zachary Levi has revealed he took a shot, and It's Always Sunny star Glen Howerton came infamously close, making it to the final rounds of consideration alongside Pratt.

Smallville's Michael Rosenbaum has explained his own failed audition to play Peter Quill, explaining that "I was nervous as sh*t. You're sitting there with one of your best friends who's directing a huge movie, who knows your ability and said, 'I wanna see your take on Peter Quill.' Now the pressure's on... I didn't know anything about the Guardians comics. I just wanted to do a good job for James."

For Rosenbaum, there was no disappointment, just the honor of being considered. "The way I look at it...I was privileged to be one of the few people that got to screen test," the actor explained. "I was so honored and grateful that James had me audition."

Ironically, Guardians of the Galaxy casting director Sarah Finn recently revealed that, originally, "[Chris] didn't want to audition, and James [Gunn] didn't want to see him." However, both Gunn and Pratt have long since stated that when they finally did click, it was bond that would last a lifetime, and produce one of the greatest Marvel movie trilogies there is.

X-Men Brutally Reveals Why Kitty Pryde Is One of the Deadliest Marvel Mutants Around https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-x-men-25-spoilers-kitty-pryde-shadowkat-vs-kills-orchis-comics/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 21:12:00 +0000 Kofi Outlaw 711636c1-f776-4f32-b0be-b482b786eaa7

Marvel's X-Men Universe got dealt a near-fatal blow during the 2023 Hellfire Gala, where the human organization Orchis launched a surprise attack against the mutant nation of Krakoa, slaughtering even some of the most powerful X-Men characters, banishing nearly every mutant from the Earth, and framing mutants for their own "Mutant Massacre." The surviving X-Men have been left on the run and/or going into hiding - except for Kitty Pryde, who takes up a very dark and brutal mission of war...

X-Men #25 SPOILERS FOLLOW!

The story of X-Men #25 jumps back and forth between the immediate aftermath of the Hellfire Gala attack, and several weeks (months) later, when the surviving X-Men have settled into a new dystopian status quo. Emma Frost takes on a new public identity as Tony Stark's secretary, while the Avengers and X-Men meet in the Morlock tunnels in the sewers to mount resistance efforts.

x-men-25-cover-artwork-2023-shadowkat.jpg
(Photo: Marvel Comics)

One of the biggest questions to come out of the Hellfire Gala was what happened to Kitty (Kate) Pryde. After never being able to use Krakoa's warp gate portals, Kitty discovered (purely by error) that Orchis's hacking of the gates has literally and figuratively opened the doors for her. Unfortunately, last we saw, Kitty ended up in Jerusalem, surrounded by a squad of Orchis agents.

X-Men #25 drags out the mystery of how Kitty got away until the climax, spending more of its page time conveying how Kitty's new "Shaodwkat" persona has made her a ruthless wartime spy. However, in the climatic reveal of the issue, we see that Kitty became "Shadowkat" by pulling off some of the most brutal mutant power kills we've ever seen!

In a flashback scene, we see Kitty face the Orchis agents in Jerusalem and give them the ultimatum to stand down - or else. Even though Kitty is a high-value target due to her phasing powers, the Orchis agents are far from intimidated by her - with the commander trying to shoot her down in cold blood; however, Kitty Pryde was once trained by Wolverine's ninja master, Ogun, and isn't an easy kill. Realizing that her ability to move through the closed portal gates is one of the only major tactical advantages that mutantkind has now, Kitty decides she has to dispatch every Orchis agent who witnessed her secret - with extreme prejudice.

What takes place neck is the most fearsome display of Shadowkat's mutant phasing powers: phasing the squad commander's pistol barrel into his brain; partially phasing other soldiers into solid objects; phasing two other soldiers into one horrific Cronenberg fused body, punching out a heart - even phasing two grenades into the bodies of soldiers who promptly exploded in masses of blood and guts. The most horrific thing about it all is that afterward we're told that Kitty covered the slaughter by phasing the carnage into the floor, leaving no trace.

This brutal incident definitely transforms "Kate Pryde" into "Shadowkat" - i.e. giving the heroine her own "Ronin" phase. The cold survivalist demeanor Shadowkat has is a nice change to the character - the closest she's arguably ever been to her Age of Apocalypse counterpart. Pirate "Kate" was a lot of fun - "Shadowkat" is poised for a much darker arc - starting with her misguided mission to take out the X-Men's double agent inside Orchis, Firestar.

X-Men #25 is on sale at Marvel Comics.

Daredevil: Born Again: Rosario Dawson Responds to Fan Demand She Reprise Marvel Role https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/daredevil-born-again-rosario-dawson-return-response-revealed/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 20:35:00 +0000 Adam Barnhardt 69cfa1e4-34a2-4ac8-8f7a-6aa0dba98887

Even though production on Daredevil: Born Again has been temporarily halted due to the ongoing writers' and actors' strikes, fans are still busy speculating as to what the series could be about. Amongst the speculation is a lingering hope that more characters from the previous Netflix series will make a return; after all, the only two returning actors confirmed by Marvel Studios for reprisals are Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock and Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.

Claire Temple, played by Rosario Dawson in the Netflix series, is another fan-favorite--one closely tied to the development of Murdock's character. According to Dawson herself, Disney has yet to call her to appear in the series, even though she's already hard at work doing other projects for the movie studio.

"People keep asking me if I'm gonna be on Daredevil: Born Again, and I'm always like, 'Well, [Disney] knows where I am,'" Dawson said in an interview with THR, one that took place before the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. "So it's been a pretty remarkable journey to be at this place now and just working at this scale.

Another favorite people are hoping to see return is one Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll. Woll spoke to a potential return earlier this year, saying she felt her time with the character is over.

"You know, this was so cool to be a part of Daredevil, and I think it was such a unique little corner of the MCU that felt really special," Woll said at ICCC earlier this summer. "I'm really happy with what I've had, and there is no plans for me so far on either side of the comic book universe, but I'm so grateful for the experience that I had."

When is the Daredevil reboot coming out?

Daredevil: Born Again is expected to drop Spring 2024. The first three seasons of Daredevil and The Defenders limited series can now be seen on Disney+. If you haven't signed up for Disney+ yet, you can do that right here.

What other characters do you hope to see join Marvel's new Daredevil series? Let us know your thoughts either in the comments section or by hitting our writer @AdamBarnhardt up on Twitter to chat all things MCU!

Marvel's Spider-Boy Comic Takes "the Weirdest and Wildest Swings" With Spider-Man's Sidekick https://comicbook.com/comics/news/marvel-spider-boy-comic-variant-covers-spider-man-sidekick-bailey-briggs-dan-slott/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 20:00:00 +0000 Cameron Bonomolo c9ce430b-89bc-4bda-9148-de9b668e2522

Who is Spider-Boy? It's the question fans have been asking since Spider-Man's long-lost sidekick swung into the pages of Dan Slott and Mark Bagley's Spider-Man #7 (2022). "End of the Spider-Verse" pit Peter Parker and his Spider-allies against the ancient Wasp totem Shathra, who used the Totem Dagger to erase Spiders from across the Spider-Verse out of existence in her quest to dominate the Web of Life and Destiny. That includes the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman, the Kaine Parker Scarlet Spider -- and the last Spider severed from the Great Web, a young boy named Bailey Briggs.

When Ara?a rewove the fabric of reality, restoring the erased Spiders, the psychic Madame Web confirmed that Spider-Boy belongs to the mainstream Earth-616... but no one remembers him. Slott and artist Humberto Ramos fleshed out the character in the "Nobody Knows Who You Are" story in Edge of Spider-Verse #3 (2023), where the tween superhero realized that everyone -- even his partners in crime-fighting, Peter Parker and Miles Morales -- magically forgot Spider-Boy.

Starting in November, Marvel's Spider-Boy will unmask the mystery of Bailey Briggs in his first solo series from Slott and artist Paco Medina (X-Men: Before the Fall - Sinister Four).

"Spider-Man isn't supposed to have a sidekick. That's just wrong on so many levels. And that is exactly why we are going to have so much fun with this," Slott told Marvel.com. "Both this character--and this new title--are going to break all the rules. Bailey Briggs is going to have over-the-top adventures in the Spider-Man corner of the Marvel Universe. He'll be facing off against a mix of both all-new villains and fan-favorite Spidey bad guys. The one thing we can promise you, whenever you pick up a copy of Spider-Boy, we are going to take the weirdest and wildest swings with every single story! Our goal is to get every reader to ask two questions: 'What in the hell did I just read?!' and 'When is the NEXT one coming out?!'"

The publisher has revealed two new Spider-Boy #1 variant covers ahead of the book's November debut, which features a standard cover by co-creator Ramos. The first, from David Aja (Daredevil, X-Corp), highlights the unique way Spider-Boy traverses the city -- with spider-like parkour powered by his unstable molecules shoes invented by Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four -- and the second depicts Spider-Boy in the signature style of artist John Tyler Christopher (Old Man Quill).

Marvel Comics describes the new ongoing series: "Spinning directly out of Spider-Man, the new series will dive headfirst into Spider-Boy's untold past by introducing his arch-nemesis and further exploring his connections to the Spider-Man mythos. Join Spider-Boy as he battles to restore his destiny and retake his place amongst the great heroes of the Marvel Universe!"

In other Spider-Verse news: Spider-Man is back in black and on the hunt for Kraven in The Amazing Spider-Man; Hallows' Eve plans to spring Chasm, a.k.a. Spider-clone Ben Reilly, out of Madelyne Pryor's Limbo Embassy prison in Amazing Spider-Man Annual 2023 #1; and the Carnage symbiote is on a mission to kill all Venoms across the multiverse in Death of the Venomverse #1.

Marvel's Spider-Boy #1 is on sale November 1st.

Marvel Crisis Protocol Announces New Core Set, Reveals Vulture, Scarlet Spider, and Sandman https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/marvel-crisis-protocol-new-core-set-scarlet-spider-vulture/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 19:52:00 +0000 Christian Hoffer d230dca6-410d-4541-b186-29e5b2658fd3

Atomic Mass Games has announced plans to release a new Marvel: Crisis Protocol Core Set later this year. The new Core Set will come with new versions of the 10 characters from the original Core Set, plus a new version of the Winter Soldier. During today's announcement, Atomic Mass Games made clear that this was not a new version of the game, but rather a new "entry point" for the game featuring more fully formed experiences for players that include several of the new mechanics introduced since the game launched 4 years ago. These updated mechanics means Grunts in the form of Ultron Drones and a new transforming Captain Marvel, who switches into her Binary form with a totally different miniature. While all of the heroes and villains of the Core Set have already appeared in the game, these are new versions with new sculpts and new character cards with different and more varied abilities.

Additionally, the original Core Set miniatures will be integrated into future Affiliations packets, ensuring that the first wave of miniatures would not disappear from the game. While these Core Set miniatures are no longer used in most competitive rosters, they won't disappear from the game and can still be purchased.

Separately, Atomic Mass Games also revealed plans for two future Character Packs - one containing the Vulture and Sandman and one containing the Scarlet Spider and Gwenom. Release dates for those packs were not announced, but will likely follow planned releases of a new wave of X-Men that include Nightcrawler, Iceman, and Shadow King.

Pre-orders for Marvel: Crisis Protocol's Earth's Mightiest Core Set are available now, with the set's full release anticipated in October 2023.

One of them will be a second wave of minifigures that celebrate popular characters from Marvel Studios movies and shows. Not surprisingly, X-Men '97 has been the darling of toy manufacturers lately, given the popularity of the original animated series and the classic look of the characters. We expect the minifigures to be the most coveted from this wave.

X-Men '97 Season 2 Recently Confirmed

During 2022's San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios gave fans their first official look at their upcoming reboot of X-Men: The Animated Series, X-Men '97, and even revealed something else pretty major. The studio also revealed that they were developing a second season of X-Men '97, and will continue the story that began in the fan-favorite original series.

Marvel Studios revealed a cool sizzle reel of X-Men: The Animated Series as the panel transitioned to the reboot series, X-Men '97. All of the original voice actors are back to play their original characters from the first show, "This is gonna be their first project since acquiring the rights back," executive producer Beau DeMayo told the crowd. DeMayo also made sure to give a shout out to all of the original creatives from the first series who stood up for a round of applause. Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Jean Gray, Wolverine, Storm, Jubilee, and Cyclops are all expected to return.

Rogue, Gambit, Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Gray, Beast, Cable, Bishop, Forge, and Morph are all returning and will joined by Nightcrawler and Sunspot. X-Men '97 will follow Magneto as he will be leading the X-Men in Professor Xavier's absence. Mister Sinister will serve as the lead antagonist in the series. "Sinister is back in a big way," DeMayo revealed. "He is going to be holding the X-Men's fate in the fire and telling humanity...to face the future."

It was thought that X-Men '97 would begin streaming exclusively on Disney+ in fall 2023, but that date may or may not be pushed back to 2024. When a firm release date does arrive, you'll be able to find it right here.

Funko Finally Unveils a Daredevil Pop From She-Hulk: Attorney At Law https://comicbook.com/marvel/news/she-hulk-attorney-at-law-funko-pops-daredevil/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 18:09:00 +0000 Sean Fallon e567e31d-0794-4634-aa7b-6c71a05a215d psx-20230802-140643.jpg

It's been nearly a year since the She-Hulk: Attorney At Law series on Disney+ spawned new Funko Pop figures, and you might have forgotten that Charlie Cox's reintroduction into the MCU as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil wasn't one of them. Today that oversight has been remedied (mostly) as part of Funko's weekly Wednesday drop events.

We say "mostly" because the She-Hulk Daredevil Funko Pop isn't available to order yet, but you can sign up to be notified here at the Funko website where it is listed as an exclusive. That might be a good idea because this Pop should move quickly. It features Matt Murdock in his yellow suit from the show.

Below you'll find the previously released Funko Pops in the She-Hulk lineup, preserved in the episode order that they were originally unveiled in. You can also keep up with news on the next appearance of Daredevil in the MCU for the Daredevil: Born Again series that's headed to Disney+ next year.

Daredevil: Born Again brings back Charlie Cox, and Vincent D'Onofrio as Daredevil and Kingpin, with Arty Froushan playing Kingpin's associate, Harry. The supporting cast includes Sandrine Holt (The Crossing) as the MCU Vanessa Fisk and Jon Bernthal, returning as Frank Castle/The Punisher from Netflix's Daredevil and Marvel's The Punisher. Rounding out the cast are Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark), Margarita Levieva (The Deuce), Nikki M. James (Severance), and Michael Gaston (Prison Break) in undisclosed roles. Series directors include Micahel Cuesta (Dexter, Blue Bloods), Clark Johnson (Homicide: Life on the Street), and Jeffrey Nachmanoff (The Day After Tomorrow). Grainne Godfree and Jill Blankenship are writing the series, alongside Aisha Porter-Christie, David Feige, Devon Kliger, Thomas Wong, and Zachary Reiter.

Previously released She-Hulk Funko Pops (August - October 2022):

The season finale of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law "Whose Show Is This?" is now streaming on Disney+, and fans are calling it the best finale of any MCU show. We finally got our first actual She-Hulk Funko Pop figure last week, but now it makes sense why Funko and Marvel took so long to deliver. They were saving the She-Hulk Funko Pop motherlode for last. You can now pre-order She-Hulk in several different variants below, though the pose is (sadly) the same for each.

she-hulk-funko-pop.jpg

Last week's She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Funko Pop features Jennifer Walters in her sparkly (glitter) gala dress, and it is available to pre-order here at Entertainment Earth (free US shipping on orders $39+ using the code FALLFREE22 at checkout) and here on Amazon. It follows a Pop figure of the villain Titania (Jameela Jamil) from episode 5 that you can also pre-order here at Entertainment Earth.

she-hulk-wong-funko-pop.jpg

Pre-orders for the episode 3 She-Hulk Wong Funko Pop are live here at Entertainment Earth as well. It is arguably the best looking figure in the She-Hulk wave thus far thanks to the addition of the portal. A breakdown of the rest of the current She-Hulk Funko Pop lineup can be found below.

fbgi049xwaa6zkj.jpg

Given the events of episode 2, it's no surprise that the villain Emil Blonsky / Abomination (Tim Roth) was the Funko Pop release for the episode. The Abomination Funko Pop is available to pre-order here at Entertainment Earth and here on Amazon. The first wave of She-Hulk Pop figures include Jen Walters (Tatiana Maslany), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Nikki Ramos (Ginger Gonzaga). All of these common Pop figures are also available to pre-order here at Entertainment Earth and here on Amazon.

she-hulk-funko-pops-wave-1.jpg

If you want more She-Hulk figure options, Hasbro and Disney have you covered with figures based on Tatiana Maslany's Hulked-out Jennifer Walters character. Hasbro's Marvel Legends figure looks especially fantastic with a spot-on head sculpt. If only they included an alternate angry head - it would have been perfect. The Disney She-Hulk figure is actually a 12-inch doll, so you have that option as well. There's a She-Hulk for everyone.

"I think people receive Jen very differently when she's She-Hulk than they do Jen Walters," Maslany told ComicBook about the star attorney's transformation into a green-skinned superhero. "And that's something that Jen, I think feeds off of in a way that she does get, you know, a little hit of confidence. It's fun to be looked at like that. But then at the same time, I feel like she also has a fraudulent sort of feeling around it. Or she doesn't totally feel like she can own that and that people might not be looking at her, but looking at just She-Hulk."

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is streaming on Disney+ now. The show has been a hit with critics and fans, including our own Jenna Anderson who writes:

"Anchored by Maslany's mesmerizing and masterful performance, the series is unafraid to be genuinely authentic, gleefully weird, and downright clever in a way that's electrifying to watch."

Roll20 Launches Full Suite of Support Tools for Marvel Multiverse RPG https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/roll20-marvel-multiverse-rpg-character-vault/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 16:00:00 +0000 Christian Hoffer 0d172178-378f-4341-9fc1-614ac7cec28d

Roll20 is rolling out their new Character Vault 2.0 feature just in time for the launch of Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game. The popular virtual tabletop suite has announced that they are launching their new character builder system with day-one support for the just released Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game, a new tabletop RPG published by Marvel that allows players to either play as Marvel superheroes or create their own. Players can use the Character Vault's custom character builder, complete with drag-and-drop capabilities, to make characters and use them in Roll20's virtual tabletop.

In addition to the Core Rulebook, Roll20 users can also purchase Revenge of the Super-Skrull, a full campaign developed for Roll20 that features four expansive maps, dynamic lighting, and pre-filled character sheets to help players dive into the campaign. Additionally, purchasing the Core Rulebook Bundle also features the opening "hours" of the upcoming The Cataclysm of Kang adventure, which launches this November. The adventure actually includes six new adventures, one for each Rank of power in Marvel Multiverse. This campaign allows players to create heroes that move from origin story all the way to the Power Cosmic.

Marvel Multiverse RPG uses a brand new "d616" system developed by veteran game designer Matt Forbeck. The new system uses 3 six sided dice for checks, with one dice designated as the Marvel dice. If the Marvel dice lands on a 1, the result is a "Fantastic" result, with a success having some extra narrative benefit or a failure still having some sort of mitigating factor. The new game underwent a massive overhaul during the game's yearlong playtest, resulting in a major simplification of the game and the removal of a number of features.

Marvel Multiverse Role-Playing Game launches today.

Comic Book Reviews for This Week: 8/2/2023 https://comicbook.com/comics/news/new-comic-reviews-dc-marvel-image-august-2-2023/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 15:00:00 +0000 Chase Magnett 0e35d192-b5a6-4a70-b65a-b26de777896c

Welcome to this week in comic book reviews! The staff have come together to read and review nearly everything that released today. It isn't totally comprehensive, but it includes just about everything from DC and Marvel with the important books from the likes of Image, Boom, IDW, Dark Horse, Dynamite, and more.

The review blurbs you'll find contained herein are typically supplemented in part by longform individual reviews for significant issues. This week that includes Star Wars: Dark Droids #1, The Sandman Universe Special: Thessaly #1, and The Sacrificers #1.

Also, in case you were curious, our ratings are simple: we give a whole or half number out of five; that's it! If you'd like to check out our previous reviews, they are all available here.

DC #1

ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN: JON KENT #6

Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent concludes with a whimper instead of a bang. Much of the issue is devoted to Jon Kent's astounding level of power as he confronts prominent members of the Justice League to make way for a final showdown with Injustice Superman. Despite the issue's conclusion that might cannot make right, Jon applies that exact formula to all of the heroes he confronts except for Barry - determining along the way who is a "real" version of themselves. When he finally stands before Superman his mission is already accomplished off panel so that it never even seemed like a challenge and all he has for his would-be father are a long string of platitudes that essentially mean nothing. As Jon Kent shouts about laws being applied equally to all, it's already evident that's untrue of his own world even as he terrorizes a new one. What makes this unconsidered and shallow showdown all the more disappointing is the ways in which convenient plot devices are used to shape it as Jon just happens to skip a key ally of Superman's or Jay instantly forgets his mangled arm to rejoin the sequence. With artwork that forgets to develop any interesting settings in favor of bland superhero splashes and a conclusion that is anything but satisfying, it's clear Adventures of Superman: Jon Kent is best skipped altogether. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 1 out of 5

CITY BOY #3

While a little repetitive at parts, City Boy #3 has just enough to say about heroism and destiny to be a compelling read. As Superman begins to help Cameron grapple with his overwhelming ability, the fate of Metropolis itself begins to hang in the balance. Greg Pak's script is filled with compelling dialogue, although again, it falls into a frustrating rhythm in terms of revealing things about Cameron and his character. Minkyu Jung's art is still consistent, especially when the plot gets a bit more fantastical. From this point forward, I'm very curious to see what City Boy has in store. -- Jenna Anderson

Rating: 3.5 out of 5

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #5

The first arc in Justice Society of America manages to deliver a satisfying conclusion and establish a new team status quo after four issues of time travel shenanigans. The final battle with Degaton plays out along familiar lines primarily designed to showcase multiple iterations of the Justice Society coming together in battle. Janin's artwork portrays these figures in fine fashion, including a spread aimed directly at DC Comics readers' nostalgia. While the solution to defeating Degaton emerges like a deus ex machina, the battle across teams and time take up most of the space. By the issue's end there's a new roster standing and new adventures to be had; it seems like the best may very well be ahead for Justice Society of America. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 3 out of 5

KNIGHT TERRORS: BATMAN #2

To put it directly, Knight Terrors: Batman #2 is not good. Not only does the story of both this issue and the previous issue of Knight Terrors: Batman it continues from have no real story to speak of, it also sits in this weird space where it tries to propel the reader into a cliffhanger of sorts that forces them into the main event, but the story here is so nonexistent that you almost don't care. There's also the matter that, yet again, we're dealing with a story that doesn't link up with the conventions laid out for the event more broadly, but perhaps the biggest problem is that the story relies on the worn out, died, and resurected too many times idea of Batman's worst nightmare involves the death of his parents in some fashion. The man has lived lifetimes and experienced arguably greater traumas since then and we've seen other writers and other stories more competently deal with things. Williamson's fixation on this original trauma, as it were, weakens everything he might have been trying to do and ends up delivering a character that feels to the reader like he's just running on a hamster wheel and that's boring to read. The issue's backup story, featuring Arsenal and Black Canary also just feels off and there's really nothing there to hold interest. Both stories also feel messy, art-wise, too. -- Nicole Drum

Rating: 1.5 out of 5

KNIGHT TERRORS: BLACK ADAM #2

Knight Terrors: Black Adam does not exist as a story unto itself. The opening of issue #2 has Deadman appear (in Batman's form) to briefly tease some plot developments from Knight Terrors before disappearing; it concludes on a cliffhanger that is set to be resolved in another one-shot. Between these moments, the only ones that seem to possess any sense of direction, Black Adam continues to wander through his own nightmare. It's only in this interregnum driven by dream logic that readers can manage to lose themselves for a few minutes. The visions and horrors perceived by Black Adam in his worst dreams conjure some eerie imagery and will play for readers with an appreciation of the anti-hero's history. But they amount to little as Black Adam's ultimate release from his nightmare resembles most superhero comics as he punches his way through his problems. Knight Terrors: Black Adam is ultimately a pair of issues reserved only for the most intense Black Adam (or "Knight Terrors") completionists. -- Chase Magnett

Rating: 1.5 out of 5

KNIGHT TERRORS: POISON IVY #2

Of all of the "Knight Terrors" tie-ins, it's the Poison Ivy miniseries that understood the assignment and of those, issue #2 particularly so. We don't try to get too weird with Pamela's character or history here. Instead, Wilson truly explores the things that Pamela is afraid of. It's haunting, but it's made even more so by Ilhan's perfectly unhinged and deranged art that takes everything to a new and horrifying level. The result is a comic that is chilling and weirdly heartfelt and unsettling that you know will have impact far beyond the event it's been dropped into. It's a solid reminder why the Poison Ivy series is one of DC's best - even when shoehorned into a mediocre event. -- Nicole Drum

KNIGHT TERRORS: RAVAGER #2

Ravager's battle through the horrors of "Knight Terrors" seems like it's over just as quickly as it began - but the experience proved to be a visually-interesting and emotionally-resonant one. As Rose battles against an all-too-familiar demonic world, we get some predictable, but still entertaining story beats from Ed Brisson. Dexter Soy's art really gets a chance to jump out here, especially with regards to the macabre visions that surround Rose. This might not reinvent the wheel, but for diehard Ravager fans, this is definitely worth celebrating and appreciating. -- Jenna Anderson

Rating: 4 out of 5

KNIGHT TERRORS: THE JOKER #2

Knight Terrors as an event overall can be a tad hit or miss when it comes to its tie-ins, but luckily, The Joker's nightmare is definitely more of the former than the latter. Starting off this issue with a hilarious job interview featuring Mr. J and Mr. Freeze, we are given more of a look into the Joker's nightmare. Unfortunately, this second issue tends to slip a little bit more than its first, as right when the comic is getting good, readers are ripped out of the proceedings. While the issue, and series, ends with a thud, that doesn't stop this "Knight Terrors" tie-in from justifying its existence more than a few times over. -- Evan Valentine

PEACEMAKER TRIES HARD! #4

Peacemaker and Red Bee's hunt for Brain (and Bruce Wayne) makes for one of the funniest issues published by DC Comics in 2023. Every leg of the journey is stuffed with idiosyncratic concepts and hilarious one-liners as they look for allies before flying to the Amazon. There are multiple appearances by Z-list DC characters, each used to incredible effect that makes preserving the surprise a necessity. The Red Bee, in particular, finds plenty of opportunities to express his colorful personality and play upon a ridiculous power set to great effect. Both in flashbacks to World War II and when taken hostage in the present, Red Bee proves to be an all-star edition to an already outstanding book. What's most impressive is the ways in which artist Steve Pugh manages to effortlessly shift the tone between hyperviolence and hilarity in the midst of an action sequence filled with bullets, blow, and bees. Peacemaker Tries Hard! started well and continues to get better with each passing issue, and #4 promises the best is (somehow) still to come. -- Chase Magnett

THE SANDMAN UNIVERSE SPECIAL: THESSALY #1

Watching this slow-burn, character-focused story, punctuated with disturbing moments of horror, play out as engrossingly as one might expect coming from Tynion, a writer who has now won three consecutive Eisner Awards for writing, and Llovet's artistic style makes it all feel seductive - like the reader is being put under one of Thessaly's spells. The Sandman Universe Special: Thessaly #1 is an issue that holds up perfectly well by itself, yet by the end, the full consequences of Thessaly's transaction with Tommi remain uncertain, and that's a story readers will likely have a great desire to follow. -- Jamie Lovett

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

STEELWORKS #3

Dorn, Basri, and Cifuentes add another solid issue to Steelworks, introducing some major new concepts to John Henry Irons' new world, but becoming a tad too top heavy in the process. Much like the previous two issues of this mini-series, there are some amazingly interesting concepts here such as Irons conversation with Superman and Natasha becoming a bit too close to her armor. As mentioned in my previous reviews, the villains of this piece simply don't have a lot going for them and in cast that involves quite a few "Supers" there are a lot of moving pieces to take into account. Steelworks feels like a worthy return to John Henry Irons and re-invigorates his place in Metropolis, it could have just used some fine tuning to get rid of some of the chinks in its armor. -- Evan Valentine

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #1

Even as a big fan of Hallows' Eve and their recent miniseries, this year's The Amazing Spider-Man Annual largely falls flat with a story that changes essentially nothing. Janine Godbe's attempt to rescue Ben Reilly begins on a baffling note when Spider-Man is lured into invading Limbo - a concept that only draws attention to Godbe's efforts and makes the relatively new anti-hero appear absolutely witless. While it provides an excuse for Spider-Man to be in the issue's A-story, Spider-Man's presence adds very little beyond his standard array of quips and the most villainous figure in a setting dressed like Hell. Nothing changes by the story's end and leaves readers wondering why exactly they needed to read this installment. The backup story ties into the events of X-Men: Hellfire Gala 2023 in a conflagration that is initially humorous, before a strangely unbalanced battle between Spider-Man and MJ's Aunt Anna grows into another depressing affair tied to the X-line. This annual touches on interesting elements running through Marvel Comics today, but doesn't contribute anything substantial to them in terms of style or story. -- Chase Magnett

ASTONISHING ICEMAN #1

As a long time Iceman fan, it's wonderful that Bobby Drake is getting a chance to shine in Astonishing Iceman #1, though I did not expect that to happen after the dour events of the Hellfire Gala. Those events meant that writer Steve Orlando had to explain how Iceman is even alive before moving into the actual series and whatever it wanted to explore. Thankfully Orlando was more than up to the task, utilizing a genuine connection in Bobby's life to bring him back to life in a creative way and using that process to shake up Bobby's status quo as a person and as a mutant. Meanwhile artist Vincenzo Carat and colorist Java Tartaglia allow Iceman's expansive power set to shine, though the sequences of Bobby talking to his double might just be my favorite ones of the entire issue. That said, Romeo's part to play in this is rich with storyline potential, and their connection forms the foundation for a new and compelling status quo. I'm always up for a new spotlight on Iceman, but it's even better when it's this damn good. -- Matthew Aguilar

DEATH OF THE VENOMVERSE #1

For fans of a certain style of comic book character, meaning Venom, Death of the Venomverse is an aesthetic playground, offering a simple answer to "What if this character was a symbiote host?" Writer Cullen Bunn doesn't appear to have much to offer beyond that for the series however, but luckily artist Gerardo Sandoval and colorist Jim Campbell are fully capable of elevating this reductive material into something at least passably interesting in its art. There's almost nothing to capture one's attention as a reader beyond what can be seen on the page as its narrative is one you've already read a hundred times in better comics. -- Spencer Perry

DOCTOR STRANGE #6

This issue is peak Doctor Strange, and there's no way around that. Jed MacKay turns out a script that's nothing short of brilliant, taking all that's good about the Sorcerer Supreme and amplifying it tenfold. Though Juan Gedeon's style doesn't initially mesh with the story being told, by the time you close the cover, you'll be thankful for the change in art as it eventually melds together, becoming increasingly complex as Doc... er... General Strange crumbles. -- Adam Barnhardt

FANTASTIC FOUR #10

Fantastic Four #10 delivers one of the best issues in the current run centered on an alien perspective to the team's intervention. The issue unfolds like a horror film as the guardians of an interstellar journey are awoken only to discover their vessel is in trouble and witness visions of burning men in the sky and monsters pounding upon the hull. Readers will appreciate the irony as they immediately recognize each encounter, but the issue filters all of that information through an outsider's perspective allowing the creeping terror and terrible consequences to exist in a suspenseful mood. The fearful and often tragic encounters build to a twist that plays upon the nature of the Four and how they interact with strangers. From start to finish, Fantastic Four #10 builds upon a single science-fiction conceit to tell a tale that still lionizes heroism without denying the terror of encountering an uncaring physical reality. In a series often defined by long-running relationships and grand epics, Fantastic Four #10 showcases just how much the team (and their stories) can accomplish in a single, standalone issue. -- Chase Magnett

MAGNETO #1

Magneto #1's very existence came off, admittedly, as jarring given what just happened to the X-Men at this year's Hellfire Gala. But this new miniseries from J.M. DeMatteis is neither a reboot nor fallout from current X-Men comics. Instead, it's a trip back to when Magneto was the headmaster of the New Mutants while Professor Xavier was off-world, though its intentions are clearly to analyze major moments in Magneto's life from his perspective and how he has bounced back and forth between hero and villain over the years. Recounting Magneto's debut fight against the X-Men may come off as rewriting history at first but it genuinely fits in with Erik's longstanding motives about saving mutants in an unforgiving world and how his actions often run counter to his upbringing as a Holocaust survivor. All of the mid-80s X-Men references might not click if you weren't reading back then, but this is a must-read for fans of the titular character. -- Connor Casey

MOON KNIGHT #26

As time goes on, Hunter's Moon continues to step out of Marc's shadow and become his own character, and Moon Knight #26 moves Dr. Badr into more vulnerable territory. Writer Jed MacKay pulls back the curtain on how Badr sees himself and his role in Khonshu's mission, but when the truth is learned about his most recent resurrection, the intrigue soars off the charts. Artist Federico Sabbatini and colorist Rachelle Rosenberg further highlight the differences between Badr from Marc, both in terms of how they approach a situation and simply in how they carry themselves. There's a level of confidence Badr projects the Marc simply doesn't have, with Marc substituting anger and vengeance in its place. And as for the big revelation, it opens up so many doors for Badr and instantly gives him a fresh angle that immediately makes him stand apart from Moon Knight both as a person and in terms of power set. Moon Knight #26 delivers a fantastic hook but also a deep dive into one of the best Moon Knight additions in ages, and the series looks to only get better from here. -- Matthew Aguilar

SCARLET WITCH #7

Scarlet Witch continues to be nothing short of absolutely outstanding, packing so much entertaining and significant storytelling into such a short span of time. This issue not only chronicles a fun side adventure that will make literary fans happy, but Steve Orlando's script delivers some major developments regarding Wanda's family, foes, and more. Lorenzo Tammetta and Sara Pichelli's art is glorious, both when the issue gets fantastical, and when it's just two characters talking. Please don't sleep on this book. -- Jenna Anderson

STAR WARS: DARK DROIDS #1

Where this Dark Droids story, or the whole crossover event, goes from here is yet to be seen and it's entirely possible that the concept could devolve back into superficial silliness or high-concept nonsense, but this debut issue provides more gravitas to the initiative than expected. The creative team on this title are all-star collaborators in the galaxy far, far away, so we can hope that this core Dark Droids title maintains some consistency and fares better than previous title-spanning storylines, though we also can't yet predict how fulfilling tie-ins will be. Despite inherent challenges, Star Wars: Dark Droids #1 proves that the most ambitious creatives in the game can find unconventional approaches to the most challenging and complex concepts and deliver something that is both superficially entertaining while also sparking existential themes of identity. -- Patrick Cavanaugh

STAR WARS: YODA #10

The final issue of Star Wars: Yoda takes the titular Jedi master to the iconic cave on Dagobah in which Luke had visions of confronting Darth Vader, as Yoda is delivered deadly visions of all of his failures throughout the years. As expected, the journey is dark and disturbing and visceral, though offers Yoda the opportunity to tap into parts of him that allow him to persevere. The sendoff to this miniseries is as riveting and enlightening as the nine issues that came before it, highlighting the wisdom that made Yoda such a compelling figure, yet one that isn't without his own flaws and vulnerabilities. This specific issue might not necessarily offer an overall revelation about Yoda, but serves as a fulfilling conclusion to one of the strongest and most consistently engaging and thrilling Star Wars miniseries in years. -- Patrick Cavanaugh

STRANGE ACADEMY: MILES MORALES #1

I've said for many months that Strange Academy is one of the best titles Marvel has released in more than a decade. That's why it's so disappointing to read through a comic like Strange Academy: Miles Morales #1 and see how the students of Strange Academy seem as if they're completely different characters. There's an entirely new creative team in place and that much is evident from the first page on. The characters are only the same in appearance only, and most development is thrown out the window in exchange for cringe-inducing dialogue and one repulsive yuck after the next. If you want to keep the great memories of Strange Academy alive, stay clear of this iteration. -- Adam Barnhardt

WARLOCK: REBIRTH #5

The idea of Eve Warlock had potential, but the character is largely wasted in what has amounted to nothing more than a rehash of Adam Warlock's history. This entire series has felt like it only existed as a way of putting Adam and the High Evolutionary in a new book around the time they made their big screen debuts in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. And would you look at that, the final issue arrives the same day the movie hits Disney+. -- Charlie Ridgely

WHAT IF...? DARK: VENOM #1

Let's get this out of the way - at this point, the overexposure of symbiotes within Marvel Comics has reached obscene levels. You'd be hard-pressed to find characters that haven't worn at least one Symbiote over the years (the list is long even when you just stick to Venom & Carnage) and What If...? Dark: Venom is just the latest excuse to slap Venom onto somebody else. This time it's The Thing, joining forces with the symbiote just after Mr. Fantastic got it off Peter Parker following the original Secret Wars. The problem is that the book isn't nearly as interested in a Venomized Ben Grimm as it is in The Lizard getting his hands on the symbiote. It's only at that point that the book actually fits with its "Dark" title and Dr. Connors' rantings prove that getting the symbiote would actually fit in nicely with his whole "good intentions turned evil through abusing science" schtick. I'd say the book is actually going somewhere with Ben as Venom in the final panels, but this is just a one-off so it doesn't really matter. It's yet another skippable installment in this new What If...? line. -- Connor Casey

X-MEN #25

As the first new X-Men comic since last week's cataclysmic Hellfire Gala, X-Men #25 acts like a gazetteer to the Fall of X era, laying groundwork as it points readers towards stories occurring in other upcoming books, including Children of the Vault, Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant, and Uncanny Avengers. The central throughline is Kate Pryde's re-adoption of her Shadowkat name and persona and becoming an avatar of collective mutant trauma. Even with Gerry Duggan laying the real-world juxtapositions on thick, with blunt parallels to everything from United States immigration policy to Zionism, the status quo feels both familiar and fresh in equal measure. The Hellfire Gala is hardly the first time mutants have been brought low by genocidal violence. However, where previous versions of the story either overshadowed that tragedy with newfound cultural popularity and influence (after "E for Extinction") or forced the X-Men to sit there and take it on the chin (after House of M), there's a bit more vigor to the X-Men's response here and more conviction to the resistance conceit. Visually, the issue commits to the Fall of X tone, taking familiar color palettes and turning them overcast. Keeping in step with Hellfire Gala Special, the issue earns its "Grindhouse of X" pun with spots of body horror and hyperviolence. The issue raises some questions about what exactly happened during the Hellfire Gala (If Professor X marched practically all mutants through the gates, then who is it Orchis is deporting to Mars?), but is a stellar enough start to mutantkind's dark days. -- Jamie Lovett

BLACK CLOAK #6

Black Cloak is a melting pot of various genre trappings, and the final issue of its first arc sees the creators leaning into the noir aspects of the story. The dark secrets that the powerful have made such an effort to keep hidden come to light, and the details of the murder case that set off this chain of events are seen in black-and-white contrast with the luminescent glow of the surrounding pages and the moral dilemma placed in front of the book's heroes. When presented with the opportunity to bring an unjust society built on lies crashing down, do you do it even if it means killing innocents who happen to have been born unwittingly into it? Phaedra and Pax have different answers to that question, which makes for a poignant finale and compelling setup for what comes next. The final page brings the story full circle to where it began but with the drastic changes brought on by the story's event on full display. The action sequences are muddy, too close to what's happening for it all to be clear to the reader, and Black Cloak #6 manages to dodge some of the unanswered questions about the nature of the titular organization by rendering them moot and instead making it all about the individual characters and the society at large. Those who demand those answers might be disappointed, but the issue is a game-changing conclusion that promises a very different type of story when the series returns. -- Jamie Lovett

BUFFY: THE LAST VAMPIRE SLAYER #1

Boom Studios returns to one of its best permutations of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe in Buffy the Last Vampire Slayer #1. Buffy and Spike have taken on the role of watchers for Thessaly, the child of Willow and Tara who is both a slayer and a witch. Together, they've made some reforms to the Watchers Council, addressing issues that have raised eyebrows since the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series aired, minimizing the prerequisite trauma involved in being one of the chosen. The issue suggests the creators are looking to spend more time on character development here. Buffy is still struggling to figure out who she is at this point in her life while Thessaly is going through the type of typical teen-girl trial that used to be baked into Buffy's premise, unaware that there's a supernatural element caught up in the drama. The book has a visual style that can be comfortably described as "Boom Studios circa 2023," with sweeping, loose digital linework and coloring that sometimes sacrifices cohesion for breeziness, which fits the contemporary tone of the book. Altogether, it's a stellar start to this version of Buffy's future. -- Jamie Lovett

DARK SPACES: GOOD DEEDS #3

The latest chapter of Dark Spaces: Good Deeds finally offers an explanation of what happened with the journalist protagonist's previous big story that got her blackballed in the industry, which is good information to have. The rest of the issue feels a bit listless. It feels deep enough into the story at this point that we should be past the vague foreshadowing part and beginning to approach some answers, but much of the issue is spent with characters milling about, reintroducing themselves to each, and sharing information that the readers already have. The is a series of creepy, bad things happening that offer little additional context for what we already are aware is happening. Visually, the issue still feels like it walks the line between realistic and supernatural, but the pacing is tripping up the story. -- Jamie Lovett

FIRE AND ICE #1

As the name implies, Fire and Ice #1 is based on the classic 1982 animated film of the same name, serving as a prequel to Frank Frazetta and Ralph Bakshi's original fantasy adventure. Writer Bill Willingham teams up with artist Leonardo Manco and letterer Taylor Esposito to create a world that feels true to the original's overall look and aesthetic while increasing the level of detail and brutality. The backdrops are gorgeous, and there's an impressive sense of scale and life in the environments. It also turns out sidekick tigers rule, and a moment or two of genuine shock brings a welcome level of unpredictability. The original had more than its share of classic genre tropes, and those are present here as well. Despite those I found myself immersed in this world of action, chaos, and backstabbing, and I'm eager to see where the journey goes next. -- Matthew Aguilar

GARGOYLES #8

While Gargoyles #8 doesn't do much to advance the plot, both Goliath and Coldfire get a substantial amount of character work. GRIM #12

Jessica, Lilah, and Annabel all have their own paths to walk in Grim #12, and few of them lead to joyful destinations, at least so far. Writer Stephanie Phillips brings welcome new context to the main cast in a heavy hitting opening sequence, though that could also be said of the entire issue, especially in regards to Lilah. The work of artist Flaviano and colorist Rico Renzi in cannot be undersold either, as the duo is able to create surreal and impactful sequences that capture what our main cast is going through. Sometimes these moments can shift on a dime, and the sheer unpredictability of the story keeps readers on their toes. HELLBOY AND THE B.P.R.D.: 1957 - FROM BELOW #1

A marked improvement over the last issue in the "1957" cycle of Hellboy and the B.P.R.D., this one feels like a classic Hellboy story, albeit one perhaps missing one last little hint of irony. Chris Roberson pens the issue with Mike Mignola, continuing the trend of big red going off on a singular mission, one that has larger ties to the mythology in a fun way. Artist Mike Norton returns to the world of Hellboy with great successes, getting the chance to draw a uniquely weird antagonist but also an environment that Hellboy is seldom found in. New readers will likely find something to like here, while longtime fans may come away feeling like they've read this one before. -- Spencer Perry

LOVE EVERLASTING #10

The conclusion to Love Everlasting's second arc shows the long, tension-building arc of Joan's marriage, family, and life into old age was worth the months of anticipation. Following the loss of her husband, the series fast forwards through Joan's later years and paints a portrait of idyllic life and retirement in the early 1960s. It all leads to Joan entering a nursing home at which point readers will quickly begin to understand the inevitable twist barreling toward them, and the investment in Joan's life alongside a particularly sweet romance summarized in this issue makes it hurt. Even though I often felt the series dragged in early issues, what occurs here is based on a pattern that could not have succeeded without that investment. It makes the final few pages read like a revelation - simultaneously shocking and fun. Wherever Love Everlasting is going next, it has provided plenty of reasons to believe that any additional waiting will be worth whatever is eventually revealed. -- Chase Magnett

THE ODDLY PEDESTRIAN LIFE OF CHRISTOPHER CHAOS #2

The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos #2 begins providing a sense of its story's shape after a conflicted and overstuffed debut, and it appears to be (another) fusion of superhero and horror elements set amongst high schoolers. In addition to Christopher's Frankenstein-like qualities and the appearance of a werewolf, issue #2 adds vampires and offers some insight into the ghostly figures who appeared at the end of issue #1. It's still not quite clear what the status quo is in this setting, but those genre cues make it easier to understand the addition of several new characters including a police-linked conspiracy that leans very hard on "tough lady cop" tropes. Although the plot remains muddled and Christopher's garage full of dead animals (combined with a cop and murderous vampire) leaves the story absent of any sympathetic protagonists, the strange shape of this city is cleanly presented and each sequence functions well independently even if they still struggle to cohere. -- Chase Magnett

ONCE UPON A TIME AT THE END OF THE WORLD #8

The mist creeping into Golgonooza slowly infects the orgy-infused paradise constructed by Maceo and Mezzy with all sorts of eerie occurrences and unexplained aggression. It's quickly apparent that something has corrupted this setting, but the exact nature of the corruption is unclear. There are allusions to the supernatural and past antagonists, but both the literal and metaphorical source remains a mystery through the final pages of issue #8. Instead, space is devoted to developing a mood of creeping dread, even if the inclusion of a floating hand in the magical, wintertime hot tub room seems silly given the juxtaposition. It's clear that dread is creeping back into Once Upon a Time at the End of the World from the Wasteland and things are about to go horribly awry. Given artist Leila Del Duca's penchant for detailing monsters and absurdities, it should lead to some exciting fare very soon. -- Chase Magnett

QUEST #1

Quest certainly starts off with a bang as a wedding between a lovely couple is suddenly ruined when three demons show up, kill many of the guests and kidnap the groom. From here you can map out how the rest of the issue is going to go pretty easily - the bride and her bodyguard (who is a walking emotional third wheel trope) set off to find her husband, but only after her parents try to forbid her from taking action and setting off for a mysterious far away land. What might wind up hurting this book, in the long run, is the artwork. The Southeast Asia-roots are as clear as day, but the character designs, panel layout and artwork are seriously lacking in energy, making the dialogue-heavy scenes particularly challenging to get through. The book clearly has some big narrative ambitions to the point that it might be able to work around its visual weaknesses, but it's a mighty hurdle to climb. -- Connor Casey

STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE - THE DOG OF WAR #5

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Dog of War concludes with some interesting thematic ties to Siskos' journey up until this point and will eventually come after. In the former, Sisko's experience with the Borg interface gives him a taste of what Jean-Luc Picard experienced as Locutus and a greater understanding and empathy for the man he once blamed for his wife's death. In the latter, that same experience also foreshadows his eventual ascension, transcending his mortal limitation to become one with the Prophets in the Celestial Temple. The story of Latinum the dog is a bit cheesy by the end, right down to him resuscitating the captain with a lick on the face and the rest of the crew doesn't get much to do in this issue, having already played their parts throughout, but the visuals sell the chaos of the situations with the Brokers. In the end, The Dog of War may have been balancing a few two many subplots, but it's hard to complain about a competently crafted adventure where the Deep Space 9 crew set out to save a good boy and happen to help out the rest of the quadrant in the process. - Jamie Lovett

STAR TREK: DEFIANT #6

Star Trek: Defiant #6 is every bit as epic as previously promised, weaving together a grand sci-fi tale in the property's first-ever comic event. Luckily for those who've read this series all along, it doesn't suffer from being a tie-in issue whatsoever, both pushing its own narrative along just as much as the overarching event. STAR WARS: HYPERSPACE STORIES #7

After being recruited by a young Wookiee for a harmless mission, Boba Fett's past catches up with him and puts not only him but also his young companion in danger. Even if this is a book geared at younger readers, we still see Fett embrace all of his deadly skills to get himself and the young Wookiee out of the situation, regardless of who suffers the consequences. Even though it might seem strange to have a deadly character be the focal point of a comic geared at burgeoning Star Wars fans, the events of the book manage to avoid anything particularly grisly while still embracing Fett's fearless spirit. The book also fails to deliver a connection between the bounty hunter and the young Wookiee that's in the spirit of the connection between Din Djarin and Baby Yoda in The Mandalorian, allowing this story to more authentically replicate Fett's singular focus of bounty hunting, while also managing to deliver the bare minimum of empathy from Fett for the young Wookiee. This installment in the series marks the perfect opportunity for any young fan enamored with Fett's armor to get an exciting and action-packed experience that doesn't betray the bounty hunter's deadly exploits. -- Patrick Cavanaugh

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: THE LAST RONIN - THE LOST YEARS #5

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin -- Lost Years #5 brings the series to a close exactly how anyone reading would expect, and not because of the obvious fact that it's a prequel. Throughout, the series has been a straightforward journey of revenge as Mikey makes an international journey to reach Death Worm in what amounts to a dry run of his mission to kill Hiroto Sakai in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin series. It's all well-crafted, but built primarily on cliches and well-worn tropes, offering little in the way of surprises. The story told here hardly feels essential to The Last Ronin saga, and while it's hardly a terrible read, most will probably be better served by waiting for the proper sequel, Re-Evolution, to tell the story of the next generation of Ninja Turtles. - Jamie Lovett

Heartstopper Star Joe Locke Addresses Agatha: Coven of Chaos Role https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/heartstopper-joe-locke-agatha-coven-of-chaos-audition-billy/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 14:24:00 +0000 Aaron Perine a5b0d78e-89c9-47d1-ad88-5a4d76aa1e5e

Heartstopper Season 2 is here on Netflix and series star Joe Locke just revealed how hard he tried to lock down his role in Agatha: Coven of Chaos. W Magazine interviewed the young actor before the SAG-AFTRA strike. During their conversation, Locke explained that he's been a "Marvel kid" for a long time. When the chance came to audition for a role in any MCU project, he leaped at the chance. "I did everything I could to get it," the Heartstopper star said of his audition. Locke actually couldn't even mention the name of the show, but he's clearly proud of his work on the forthcoming Disney+ series.

Locke might not be able to mention the title of the show. But, he had some serious praise for his co-stars. Shortly after talking about his audition, the actor called his castmates "the most incredible women." Patti LuPone is something of a childhood idol for him. Everyone loves Kathryn Hahn and Aubrey Plaza ended up gifting him a signed headshot at the end of filming. The stacked cast on Agatha: Coven of Chaos seems to be a real feather in Marvel's cap. The hype will only ramp up when there's more revealed about the Disney+ show.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos' Cast Is Absolutely Wild

A lot of WandaVision fans are absolutely over the moon about Agatha getting her own spinoff series. One of the bigger reveals about the show is that Aubrey Plaza will be a big player in the series. The actress has even addressed the feel of the series in previous interviews. Earlier this year, Plaza told THR that Agatha: Coven of Chaos is some of the most "elevated" Marvel material that exists. Now, as the fanbase continues arguing about everything until our Sun explodes, that will generate some discussion on its own. Here's what she said.

"Coven of Chaos was so fun. I wanted very much to work with Kathryn Hahn, I think she's so great," Plaza said. "And without saying anything really, I had a blast. I loved my character in that as well, and I think it's the most elevated Marvel material that's out there. So, it was cool to jump into that world with those people specifically."

Does Agatha: Coven of Chaos Have A Release Date?

(Photo: Marvel Studios)

As of right now, Agatha: Coven of Chaos doesn't really have a release date to speak of. Kathryn Hahn herself actually told Deadline that she has no idea either. As the Disney+ release schedule has shifted so much, next year is in a state of flux. Yes, there was a plan. But the writers and actors strikes have put even more of that up into the air. (But, rejoice, it seems the studios have agreed to come back to the bargaining table this week. So, maybe there will be progress?) Hahn is just happy to be getting to play this character again for now.

"I have no idea. I'm just an eager, eager audience member waiting to see," Hahn replied when asked about a release date. "I love her so much. I mean, she's a witch, so what could be more delicious? And especially on the heels of this very profound and deep dive [in Tiny Beautiful Things] to be able to jump into something that was surprisingly a deep, a deep and profound dive as well was really an exciting, really difficult, but incredible year."

Secret Invasion Director Reveals Why Series Doesn't Have Post-Credits Scene https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/secret-invasion-director-reveals-doesnt-post-credits/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 03:49:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 00b82dc5-b250-4356-96d7-72ff4f2df35c

Marvel Studios has finally released all episodes of Secret Invasion on Disney+, and fans have definitely started to show signs that there is Marvel fatigue. Secret Invasion was released to some very mixed reviews, and the series is one of the studio's lowest-rated projects on Rotten Tomatoes. During Secret Invasion, Marvel Studios made some big moves, like setting up a truly overpowered character and revealing that James "Rhodey" Rhodes (Don Cheadle) had been a Skrull for quite some time. One of the only things that was missing from the series was the inclusion of a post-credits scene, and it seems that there is a very specific reason for this. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Ali Selim reveals why Secret Invasion doesn't have a post-credits scene.

"None that I was privy to," Selim revealed in a new interview with the trade. "There may have been discussions in the upper offices where I wasn't involved, but I don't know. I think that they use those end-credit sequences to launch something or to resolve something, and maybe this story feels like it resolves itself. So I don't know what they're launching other than Nick Fury went up in the spaceship to get ready for The Marvels."

Secret Invasion Director on Two Things He Had to Set Up

Selim recently spoke to The Wrap and revealed that Marvel Studios only asked him to set up two things in Secret Invasion.

"I didn't feel any constraints. All I was told is, Fury's got to go up. That was it," Selim revealed in a recent interview. "So we just had to have Fury go up at the end, and it would be great if Rhodey -- if his legs didn't work. And that's it."

What went down in Secret Invasion?

Secret Invasion focuses on MCU veterans Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Mendelsohn) as they handle an invasion of shape-shifting Skrulls who have infiltrated all aspects of life on Earth. Deadpool 3 Fan Art Highlights Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds Bromance https://comicbook.com/movies/news/deadpool-3-art-hugh-jackman-wolverine-ryan-reynolds-bromance/ Wed, 02 Aug 2023 01:52:00 +0000 Nathaniel Brail 0057fe75-0fe5-4709-88b2-a7d0bcdf2f9d

Ryan Reynolds and Marvel Studios have been working hand in hand with each other to develop the upcoming third Deadpool movie, and it's also being produced by the actor's Maximum Effort production arm, which is a first for the studio. Reynolds revealed that Hugh Jackman will be returning as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 after he did his swan song in Logan, but don't worry, this might be a different version of the character. Not much is known about Deadpool 3, but it was revealed earlier today that Emma Corrin (The Crown) would be playing a villain in the film, and it is still unclear which character the actress will play. We recently got our first look at Jackman in his comic-accurate Wolverine getup, and that spawned a bunch of fan art, including this one.

An artist on Instagram who goes by the handle @Spdrmnkyxxiii created a new design that shows both Jackman's Wolverine and Reynolds' Deadpool on an X-Men-branded motorcycle flying in the air. In the fan art, Jackman's Wolverine is wearing his newly revealed costume and smoking a cigar while Deadpool is shooting at something or someone. You can check out the fan art below.

Who will show up in Deadpool 3?

Other than Reynolds and Jackman, Deadpool 3 will bring back franchise alumni Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Stefan Kapi?i? as Colossus, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder, and Leslie Uggams as Blind Al. New to the cast of the third Deadpool movie are Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) and Emma Corrin (The Crown) in currently unknown roles. Jennifer Garner, who played Elektra in 2003's Daredevil, is also set to return for the first time since her 2005 Fox self titled film. Ben Affleck is also rumored to return as Daredevil / Matt Murdock in the threequel, hinting that the film could be a sendoff for the old Fox universe of films that includes 2005's Fantastic Four and the long-running X-Men saga.

Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3 is expected to hit theaters on May 3rd, 2024. Stay tuned to ComicBook.com for more updates on Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Wolverine as we learn them!
